Painting Magic Effects (Fire and Ice)
Hello,
In this tip we’re going to show how to paint fire and ice magic using Clip Studio Paint. Remember this is one way to paint magic, you can paint anything using various methods. So let’s begin.
Blocking and color pallete
After looking at references and making a rough sketch of the mage’s hand, we start blocking the forms of the hand casting the fireball. It’s a simple process, just imagine that the fireball is the source of heat and paint the hand more towards the red the farter it’s from the fireball. I like to paint like the hand of the wizards starts to become the element of the magic, like this power is dangerous and must be respected.
Painting the Smoke
The smoke is fundamental to add drama and contrast to the fire magic. Since the fire is a light emitter it’s more visible in a darker scene. You can see how the fire in the daylight doesn’t look as powerful as one in the night.
Using photo textures
After painting the fireball alongside the smoke, I got some photo textures of fire, went to textures.com, a great site with free and premium images that you can use in your projects. When you import the images they come with a black background, just change the layer from normal to screen or lighten, it will make the black color transparent, now just adjust the images to follow the form of the painting you just did.
Now let’s talk about how to paint some Ice magic. The process is similar but blue! Just kidding. We start with a new base sketch for the wizard’s hand and start blocking in the Ice on his hand.
When painting an ice spell remember that the Ice is a translucent material, so the light passes through it but not in a linear way, it scatters. So we get the transparent but foggy look and the appearance that it emits some light.
Painting the Ice Spikes
To this magic I imagined some ice projectiles, the wizard would launch some stalactites on his enemies, damaging and freezing them. To paint this is simple, just remember that it is an Ice cylinder, so it’s translucent like the wizard's hand.
So that's it, you now have the knowledge to be a spell caster, at least in the digital painting world. Good drawings and thank you.
