Introduction

With Clip Studio Paint you can make a huge amount of effects using lines, dots and so on.

In this tutorial, i'll introduce you the principles of how to make a Pop Art illustration using these tools.

Canvas

First, let's create the canvas.

The Use of work select [Illustration], in Preset [Custom] A4 and Set the resolution in 300 dpi.

Follow the red dots to a better comprehension.

Organizing the Folders

Create 4 folders in the [Layer] palette and rename it.

1. Lineart

2. Colors

3. Sketch

4. Background

Shortcuts

Firstly, i'll tell you some shortcuts that will help a lot.

First shortcut: [Ctrl+Alt+Left click and hold while drag]

This allows you to change the size of the tools, like pen or pencils for instance.

(You have to drag the mouse cursor pointed to the center of circle that will appear to it works, you can do this in the vertical or horizontal.)

The other shortcut is: [Ctrl+Space+Left click and hold while drag]

This allows you to use the zoom in and out. (You have to drag to the left and right to it works. Left/zoom out, Right/zoom in.)

Rough Sketch

Now, it's time to create your sketch. For this tutorial i choose the [Rough pencil] tool to make the sketch.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Pencil] > [Rough pencil].

With the sketch folder selected, go to [Layer Property] tap [Layer color]. Your pencil will draw with a blue color, this helps to distinguish layers when you are making the final lineart.

And then, the sketch is done!

Lineart

Select [Sub Tool] palette > [Pen] > [Real G-Pen].

Choose a brush size that you feel more comfortable.

Increase the [Stabilization] to 100.

Now, make the parts of Lineart in separated layers.

I want to bring some highlight to the Eletronic parts, i put them in a different folder because it's something a little more complex.

I'll show you how i made each component.

To the bigger one use the [Figure ruler].

[Sub Tool] palette > [Ruler] > [Figure ruler] > [Ellipse].

TIP: Hold shift to make a perfect circle.

Draw the first circle and then make a copy by holding Alt and dragging the layer. Ctrl+T to use the transform tool, and then do the copy smaller.

The last circle you drag it a little to the left side, and then erase some part, like the example below.

Make a rectangle using [Rectangle] tool, and select the [Create fill], the black color must be selected.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Figure] > [Direct draw] > [Retangle].

Organize them like the example by copying the layer and rotating (Use Ctrl+T to rotate).

So, to make the other component select [Sub Tool] palette > [Figure] > [Direct draw] > [Ellipse], In the Brush shape change to [Rough Edge].

If you think that the line is not bold enough, use the [Correct line width] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Correct line] > [Correct line width].

To the circle inside, change the Brush shape to [Pen].

Create a New vector layer, select [Vector eraser] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Eraser] > [Vector].

Draw four ellipses and erase the parts like the example.

Select the [move] tool, [Sub Tool] palette > [Move layer].

Draw one line and copy it using alt, at the same time hold shift to let it aligned, then make a retangle below.

Now, organize them together, use the transform tool (Ctrl+T). Hold the point while holding Ctrl to make a distortion.

The rest is just wires using some lines. And the lineart is done.

Painting character

Below the folder color create a New layer, this layer will be used as a base to all colors, also make some folders inside Color folder.

1. Eletronics components

2. Glow

3. Shadows

4. Base color

Select [Refer to editing layer only] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Auto select] > [Refer to editing layer only].

Also increase the [Area scaling] up to 6, this prevents that the color leaks outside the character when painting.

Here the difference between zero and six.

Click outside the character and invert the selection.

[Command] bar > [Selection area] > [Invert selected area], and paint the base layer whith white color.

Two clicks on the Paper layer and change the color to slightly gray.

Tap the [Clip at Layer Below] with the Colors folder selected, this way the colors will appear just inside the Base layer.

TIP:

To choose the colors i used a chromatic circle. With this tool you can make some colors combinations easily.

You can use some shapes to make these combinations, like line, triangle, square for instance. To this illustration i going to use the triangle shape.

To start painting the base colors, Select the [Real G-Pen]. Paint each color in a different layer inside the folder (I advice you to use the selection learned before, using the [Auto select] tool).

To some parts that are more hard to make a selection, use the [Selection pen], with this tool you can use the stabilization, like the Pen or Pencil tools.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Selection] > [Selection pen]

With base colors.

To make a selection just in the layer that you want, hold Ctrl+left click on the layer. For example, you can use the base layer of the skin, do a selection and paint in your Shadow skin without leak outside to other parts.

Ctrl+left click of the mouse.

Got to the Shadow folder and paint the Shadow skin.

Painting without leak.

Paint the shadows in the Shadow folder, also with separated layers.

To her cheeks use the [Transparent watercolor] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Watercolor] > [Transparent watercolor]

Paint the glows using also the [Real G-Pen].

Paint in the Glow folder with separated layers.

To the Eletronic components, select it using the [Refer to editing layer only] and [Selection pen].

tap on the [Clip at layer below] to make the shadow above the yellow layer.

In the Lineart folder, create a New layer above your lineart layer. Tap the [Clip at layer below] and paint the inner lines of the character.

Background

Make a blue layer below all the folders.

Select the [Stripe] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Gradient] > [Stripe].

Inside the folder Background, create a New layer select the yellow color, hold shift to make 45° lines and drag.

i hide the character folders for a while to make the background.

TIP:

The less you drag, more thin the lines will be.

Select the [Scattered saturated line].

[Sub Tool] palette > [Figure] > [Saturated line] > [Scattered saturated line].

Select the color, choose the point that this will begin, click and drag till become something like in the example.

Create a New layer and make a pink circle using [Sub Tool] palette > [Figure] > [Direct draw] > [Elipse], also let the Line/Fill in Create fill.

Go to the [Material] palette and drag a [27.5 line 20% Circle Monochrome] to the canvas.

[Material] palette > [Material Dot] > [Dot] > [27.5 line 20% Circle Monochrome].

In [Layer Property] palette, tap on [Layer color], decrease the [Number of screen frequency] to 6.0, choose the color to the dots and put your mouse cursor above the [Set layer color], the mouse will become a [Fill] tool, tap it and the dots will change the color, like the example below.

Now, tap on the [Clip at layer below] and it will fill just the circle.

Create a New layer and make a yellow circle, select the [Dark stream line] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Figure] > [Stream line] > [Dark stream line].

Also change the configurations like the example.

Drag Beyond the circle, from above to the bottom, two clicks to finish the process. tap [Clip at layer below] to fill just the yellow circle.

Create a New layer and make a blue circle. Then go to [Command] bar > [Layer] > [New layer] > [Tone].

Change the configurations like the example below.

In [Layer Property] palette, change the color like the image below, tap [Clip at layer below] to fill just the blue circle. Also i'll let here how the layers are organized to you use as a guide.

The background is done.

Concluding

Now, it's time to finish the character.

Select [Command] bar > [Layer] > [New layer] > [Tone].

Configure as the image below. Tap [Clip at layer below] to fill just the character. Put this New layer above the folder Colors.

In [Layer] palette change the Blending mode to [Overlay].

Select the [Soft] tool.

[Sub Tool] palette > [Eraser] > [Soft].
