Clip Studio Paint is a drawing program in which you can use different drawing tools, such as pencil, airbrush or brush.

In this tutorial we will focus on explaining the creation of brushes and how to save them!

1. File initiation

To start before we must create a file. To do this, once inside the program, we go to the upper left and follow this route: File> New.

At this point we can choose the parameters that best fit what we want to create and we accept. On this empty canvas we can start building our brushes.

2. Pinceles de Clip Studio Paint

Clip Studio Paint consists of many options to which brushes refers. In addition to the opportunity to easily and easily download materials from your platform, many preset and different types are already available, these being: watercolor, paint and ink.

3. Parameters of the brushes

Each of the types mentioned above has its own parameters, since they need their own adjustments to give the sensation of the appropriate texture.

In order to see the properties of the brush, if it does not appear by default, we must follow the path: Window [W]> Tool properties.

3.1 Painting

When we use the Paint brush type we can adjust: brush size, amount of paint, paint density and we can even choose the texture we want to give it and its density level.

3.2 Ink

As in Paint, in Ink we can adjust the size, opacity and density, but also Brush strokes allows you to decide the default thickness, from thinner to thicker.

3.3 Watercolor

And finally the watercolor, where all the previous options are added plus the hardness.

4. Let's create a brush!

Before creating our leaf brush we will learn to create a texture brush!

The easiest way to do this is to go to the Brush tab, choose the type you want, for example in the section Painting> Oil painting.

With the right mouse button on top of the preferred brush, we duplicate it. In this way we have two equal brushes to be able to modify the new one.

4.1 New brush settings

In the Tool Property section we can begin to choose the desired parameters and also in each one, in the right part another more advanced level of adjustment is displayed.

In this we already play with the Pressure of the pen (it will be dictated by the pressure you exert with the brush on the tablet) and the inclination of it. And for more progress they can be adjusted from two points; the numerical values (with the bar, sliding the marker) or with the curves, which give more precision.

At the bottom, as seen in the photograph, there is an icon which gives even more advanced options.

5. Particle brushes

These, unlike those of texture, are formed from shapes. That is, they consist of 2 (at least) different ways which alternate to give a diversity effect.

For example, it can be used to create a tree. Having so many leaves can end up being an arduous task to draw the foliage, so the simplest way is to create a brush with different leaves, which alternate with each stroke if we configure it that way. In this way a more realistic effect is achieved with less time. Next we explain it.

5.1 Preparation of images

There are two ways to make a particle brush. The first is preserving the original colors of the photograph, which will not be affected by the color chosen at that time. The other option is to pass the photo to grayscale, then it will adapt to the desired color tone.

Before we begin, we must select the images that we will use, for example, we can go out to pick up some sheets that fit our preferences, as in the example.

This way we don't use content from other creators!

5.1.1 Grayscale image

Once our sheets are chosen, we must take some photographs on a white background and import it into Clip Studio Paint simply by dragging it from the folder in which it is located to the program.

It is important that it be in the .png format, with transparency. If we do not have one in this format, we can take our photo with a white background and delete it as follows.

With the Magic Wand tool we select the remaining areas and with the Delete key we delete them.

With the right click we give you on top of the layer in which the photograph is. And we look for Convert Layer, or with the keyboard shortcut H.

Once opened in the Color Expression tab we change from Color to Gray, that is, to grayscale.

We accept and have this result. The black and white image.

5.2 Save the material

In order to create the brush, we must first save the material we just created in the Materials library.

Following the path of: Edition> Material Record [I]> Image

In the pop-up pop-up that will open we will see the image that we have chosen in a thumbnail. We will check the Use box as a brush tip shape.

CSP must categorize the material in order to use it later and insert it. We decide in which category we want to save the form we just created. Since it is an image, we save it in Image Material.

This is the path to follow to get to that box: Material properties> Material settings for the brush: Use as a brush tip shape.

And in this case the route is: Location for storing material> All Materials> Image material

The library of textures and materials has an infinite number of files so we add another level of labeling to find it more easily later, which we will call “sheets”.

We repeat this with all the different ways we want. At least two ways.

5.3 Material import

We must erase all the textures that the duplicate brush already has and import ours, which we have created under the LEAF label. Next, we explain how it is done.

5.3.1 Brush Duplication

As we have done previously with texture brushes, we will duplicate a particle brush. The example is in the Ink> Dark Bleed section. With the right click Duplicate sub-tool.

5.3.2 Brush tip

We access the Tool Properties, remember that you arrive by following the path: Window [W]> Tool Property. At the bottom we select the wrench, with which we will enter the next level of adjustment.

We want to change the set of tips that this particle brush has, so we access the Brush Tip. We erase them all, not with the Delete from the keyboard, but with the Garbage Bin symbol (marked in red).

And now we use everything we've been doing. We open the material library by clicking on the Blank Sheet (new sheet).

At the top of the pop-up box we write the name that we have chosen in the previous steps in the search engine, SHEET, where all the forms will appear under that tag.

We accept and these are loaded in the Material tab. Above all we will see that we are in this tab, not in the Circle.

As we see, the shapes have been inserted into the brush. And here we start playing with all the parameters that the program offers.

6. Particle brush configuration

At this time the brush is already created. Now we have to change the settings until it is as we like. On the right side of each parameter there is an icon that opens a box with advanced settings.

As seen in the screenshot below, in the part of Brush shape> Brush Tip we can configure different parameters to adjust our brush to our liking. For example, in this case we have activated the Pressure of the pencil, which will make it adapt to our pressure and we will put the order of the shapes in random, so that it gives more variety.

To give a smooth effect and that the texture accompanies the graphic tablet brush, we will activate the Pen / Pen Pressure in the Ink and Spray Effect sections. Next, we will explain carefully what each one does.

6.1. Ink

Everyone's first step is to get the pencil to take control of what we do. In this case we do not want everything to be in a fixed number and that the stroke is always the same. Activating the Pencil Pressure, everything we draw will be decided with the pressure we exert on the canvas and in this way will be more like a traditional brush.

6.2 Spray Effect

When activated, the particles will be dispersed, that is, more or less separated from each other depending on the density of the particles we choose and their size.

To give more diversity to the sheets, in the right part of Particle Size we will select the icon with more advanced options / Stylus. We activate the pressure of the pencil and the Random.

Thus we make the shapes that we have created and imported not have a fixed size, that is, with the pressure we exert on the canvas they will be more or less large.

6.3 Stroke

In this section we control how the brush stroke will be. In this case we want the ends of the stroke to be as thin as possible and the center thicker. For that we choose the Normal option.

7. Colors and subcolors

To give more depth to the brush we must know the advantages of adjusting the colors. At the bottom of the toolbar there are three color spaces, the main color, the subcolor and the transparent one.

The main color will be the most visible in the illustration, as it will be above, and the subcolor will be below. Finally, the transparent one, which we will not use, since it eliminates the colors of the pixels.

In the screenshot below we can see the difference between using the color we want to use for the leaves and a white subcolor, which will take away a lot of depth and definition. And on the other hand, one suitable for the main color, in this case black.

We can also put a different subcolor if that is what we want!

8. Result

As we see in the image, with all the parameters that we have adjusted, the shapes chosen alternate randomly and have an opacity and thickness depending on the pressure.

8.1. Variations

Although this is an example of what we can do, adjusting the parameters differently we get other results.

The particle sizes are fixed and without dispersion, so a line-like brush is created.

In this case, the amount of particles is larger and with random size. It gives a bush effect since there are more leaves together than in the others.

And finally, another variation with the smallest particles and with a greater dispersion.

9. Eraser with our brush!

The process of erasing with a brush with textures can be difficult because you should do all the previous steps again but in the Erase tool.

But with the C key there is no need to do so. Now we explain it!

9.1. Tecla C

With the selected brush, already customized and to our liking we give the C key. This key converts the brush to transparent. That is, pixels that contain color become transparent. When we pass it over what we already had painted with our texture brush, they will be erased with the same shape of the leaves (in this case).

Here you can see the concept before and after using the brush of leaves that we have created!
