Webtoon guide
Introducing
Webtoons are another form of comic publication. They have unique format, which is very comftable for reading on a smartphone, because each episode is published on one long ,vertical strip.Another difference - webtoons are usually colored, unlike comics that typically use black and white.
Prepare the canvas (2 ways to do it)
1. The standart size of webtoon is 800x1280 px.,per page(and its the maximum size). For more easily process I
m going to work on pages, which Im going to save in jpg formats and in the end I will estimate their total size and combine them .It
s just more simple for working to me.The arerage webtoon episode has 20 pages, but now I`m going to create only 5 (and at the end will goes on 800x6400 px).So go to Create new file and from custom- select- insert- 800x1280 px- OK.
2. Second option is to work on the long vertical strip and then to work with a multiple windows to display the whole canvas, while working on a specific scene. This is good, because enables to check the whole composition. So go to create a new file- you could use custom size,or choose the comico size, which is 690x7000 px.Now ,when you have a canvas go to Window menu - canvas- new window to create a separate view of the whole strip.
- Choose 72 dpi, because of the color if you print it ,the printer will convert down higher dpi.
Prepare the script and sound effects
It`s important to prepare the text to oue story in advance, because in this way we can decide what to draw (according to our plot),how exactly to place it and where to place the text.We have to use all the space properly.
Another thing that webtoon has developer the method that makes it possible to express sound visually. For an example - laughing might be "ha-ha-ha" ,dogs barkling could be "Arf,arff..bark! bark!"etc..That helps the reader to hear the sound,so it`s good to think about how to use this in your webtoon.
Sketch and storyboard on each page
This step is important about how to use the space properly, because webtoons pannels are arranges with more space between for a smaller display size.Images and effects should be clear and the text legible.Sometimes the more spaces is used for dramatic effect.
Using frames
Some of my images Ill put in a frame, but it
s not necessary for all.The frames are comftable for different scenes, for adding different backgrounds and for more difference and contrast in each action as a sequence.I`m going to use the figure menu and to choose the shape that I need .
Using 3D models
If you have some difficults for drawing a human body or some subject 3D is a very good solution. In Clip Studio Assets you will find many helpful materials.
I`m using a female pose by dragging and drop from the material menu to the canvas.
Lineart,coloring,backgrounds and gradients
1. Im using a Turnip pen for my lines, but you can choose another one if you want to .I
m working on a new layer above than the sketch (which is with a lower oppacity). After finishing the lineart,I`m deleting the sketch layers.
2. Save frequently used colors into a set of colors, because we are drawing same characters again and again. When we coloring first we add the base colors, which are mid tones and then they have to have highlights and shades for creating dimension. Its good to have three tones of one color - a base color ,a lighter color than the base and a darker color than the base color.I
m working with a different layers for skin ,hair,etc..,so when Im done with the base colors I
m using this technique - go to the layer on which you are going to work (skin for example) and from the layer bar options choose "Lock transparent pixels"and now you can applying highlights and shades on that colored part, without going outside ,so you can paint more quickly.
p.s. for some clothes in my webtoon I`ve used textures and patterns
3. You can paint the background by yourself in another layer between the frame border and the our finished image, but you could also can use backgrounds from the Clip Studio Assets- it has a great choise of nature,effects,etc..
4. Using gradients could help you to express some moods or drama effects for example nostalgia,memories,flashback...
Speech bubbles, adding text and mood effects
Go to Balloon and place the one you need on your canvas. Now add and a balloon tail, because it`s showing who is talking (or wondering).Another idea - use manga balloons from material menu just like this one.
I`m using Ames font, but on some places - Snap ITC(for more drama).
Don`t forget and for some mood effects, also and for the sound effects, which are a lot like graffiti.
For example for bad mood we can put a thunderbolt over the character`s head.
These are some of the moods in my webtoon .
Combine all the pages in one canvas
As I said in the begining ,I`ve worked on a different pages and each one was saved into jpg file. Now I open a new file with size 800x6400 px and import all the pages there.I arrange them and it looks like this.
p.s. Because the image file is too large for uploading here I will show you my webtoon by episodes
