Character design is important when animating and drawing. First get a theme or a sertan ascetic. Like; Galaxy, Pie, sketchy or bubbles. From your theme you can work off to make a pleasing character design. Second you want to brainstrom ideas for what you could add to the design. So if your theme was Pumpkin you could say you wanted to include warm colours. Choosing your favourite ideas from your brainstorming will be hard but it vital that you choose not all of them because then your design will be to busy. If your design is for animation try make the design as minimal as possible so your life is easier. Threwout these lessons i will be using my character Mushroom as an example but also making a new character with the theme of leaves. I don’t usaly write my ideas out because my charecter are all made in one sitting but you if your a beginner must write it down.
Ideas i had for Mushroom were; a mushroom must be inculded somehow, light colours for fur, etc. This is also why you must write them down so if you want to redesign something it is easier to redesign so you can keep the same basic ideas.
Make sure when brainstorming to get someone else opinion on your ideas they can help you when designing something if possible. Each of my characters goes threw someone else before i draw
