Let's draw eyes and expressions for our characters!
Hi, I'm Vann, and this time I bring you a tutorial on how to design the eyes and expressions for your character. I hope you find it useful ^^.
Introduction
"The eyes are the window of the soul"
We have heard that phrase many times, and it couldn't be more true! The eyes as well as the look and expressions of a character can tell us a lot about their personality and/or their emotions.
That is why it is really one of the most important points when designing a character. In this tutorial I will share with you simple tips for drawing different eye shapes as well as basic expressions.
eye structure
To understand how to draw expressions and eyes, we must first pay attention to their structure. Depending on the drawing style you handle, you can simplify its structure at your convenience.
I will proceed to simplify it with colors as follows:
-Eyelashes - orange
-Eyelids - purple
-Iris - red
-Pupil - black
-Brow - brown
These are the unmissable parts when structuring an eye.
basic shapes
It is recommended to start from some geometric shape when designing the eyes, in this way we can preview the type of look that our character will have and what it will express at first sight.
Different types of eyes express different personalities.
The circle, the triangle, the rhombus and the rectangle are usually the most common shapes when designing the eyes, you can deform them as much as you like and give your character a unique look.
Round or oval eyes usually give an air of optimism and innocence, it is common to see them in the main characters of an anime or manga.
The eyes derived from a rhombus, a triangle or a rectangle depending on their inclination can be interpreted in a threatening, aggressive or angry way, while at the opposite extreme these eyes could be considered serene, nostalgic and/or taciturn.
In the end, everything is a matter of perception and what we believe will be best for our character and the story to which he is or will be linked.
how to draw eyes
After selecting some of the basic shapes of the eye design, I'll start by drawing three circles in a row of the same size; another way, create a ruler and divide it into 3 equal parts, in such a way that the distance from one eye to another is always a third eye.
With this in mind let's proceed to drawing.
expressiveness in characters
To give expressiveness to a character, the eyebrows and reflections play a very important role, since thanks to the inclination of the eyebrows we can more easily tell if a character is happy, angry, irritated, etc.
The reflections help to "give life" in addition to reflecting the state of hydration of the eye, the more reflections the eye has, the more emotions the character's gaze expresses.
Now, that does not mean that the eyelashes and the rest of the eye parts are not important, on the contrary, many illustrators tend to exaggerate these to give their characters more personality, but this is something that can be practiced as you go. time passes and let's continue drawing and incorporating into our work.
conclusion
I hope this tutorial on how to draw eyes and basic expressions has been helpful to you, remember that this is not a definitive guide on how to draw, much less it is the only way. There are various methods to draw, and I only shared what I have learned in my path as an artist.
I say goodbye, not without first reminding you that; never forget that the only possible limit is your imagination. Without further ado, see you!
