Tips to improve your lineart!
Introduction
Hello, I'm Zuzu and in the tutorial below I want to show you some tips to improve the lineart in your future illustrations.
When you start drawing, one of the things that can be most complicated is achieving a good lineart. Below I will show some aspects that can help you improve.
Pen sensitivity and pressure
This is a fundamental aspect when making our lineart, since it affects the way we draw, but what is the sensitivity and pressure of the pencil?
Graphic tablets are capable of detecting the pressure with which we place the pencil and the strength of the strokes. This can be adjusted in the ways:
- Graphic tablet settings
- Clip Studio Paint Settings
If we go to the properties option of our graphics tablet we can adjust the sensitivity. The softer, the greater the sensitivity will be, and the stronger, the lower the sensitivity will be (depending on the tablet you use, the program will be different).
However, you can also find this option within Clip Studio Paint.
File > Pen pressure settings
In the third image you can modify (Harder) or (More sensitive). Adjust the pressure in the way you like best and find it most comfortable! :)
Tools
Another important point to improve lineart is to use pressure-sensitive brushes.
As you can see, the more pressure exerted, the thicker the line will be and vice versa.
Tips to improve
lineart type
Identifying the type of lineart that suits your drawing style and your taste is the main thing. Below I leave some examples of lineart for different drawing styles.
- Cleaner lines that are made in a single stroke
- More rustic and dirty lines that are made with small strokes
- Thicker lines
And since there are many more, depending on whether your style is more anime, comic, cartoon or any other, the lines you use will be different, like everything in art, there is no single way to do it. Art is free! Experiment! ;)
The sketch
The sketch can affect our lineart. Below I will give two tips that I apply to prevent this from happening.
1 - Use a light color and little opacity in the sketch
This gives greater visibility of the lines we are making.
2 - Brush thickness
Sometimes it happens that the sketch looks amazing but at the time of the lineart it does not turn out as we expected, this happens because sometimes the thickness of the brush is not adequate.
When I use a thickness in the lineart less than that of the sketch, they end up not looking alike, this can even take away movement and dynamism from the drawing.
But only by changing the thickness of the brush did I achieve a better result.
Line thickness
Giving thickness to the lines to determine the shape of the drawing is a great tool.
Use thicker lines in the larger parts to form a silhouette.
And finer lines for details.
Paint the Lineart
A tip to add a touch to your illustrations is to paint the lineart.
To achieve this it can be done in two ways.
1 - Add new layer and adjust to bottom layer
For this we create a new layer above the lineart layer and select the option to adjust to lower layer.
After this we just paint to our liking.
2 - Block transparent pixels
For this we go to the lineart layer and select block transparent pixels.
This will mean that we can only paint on previously existing pixels
Vector layer
If you don't have the pulse and that is why lineart is difficult for you, you can use vector layers, below I will explain how and the advantages of this.
Once this is done, perform the lineart as you normally do, the vector layer does not affect the brush texture. Furthermore, since they are vectors, they can be modified in simpler ways. Let's first select the line corrector.
Pinzar Lines
With this option you can drag the line and place it where you want without losing its shape
Simplify line
This decreases the number of control points a stroke has.
Combine line
You combine two strokes to become one
Modify line width
You can increase or decrease the thickness of the line.
As you could see, the vector layer is very useful for making lineart, above all it speeds up the process! let me know if you want me to make a tutorial to talk more about the vector layer :)
