Eye design for your characters
Introduction
Hello, I am Zuzu and I will show you tips and advice to design unique and different eyes!
One of the most important parts of our characters are their eyes, in these you can reflect part of their personality, so it is important to find the perfect eyes for what we want to convey through this character. Shape, color, design all influence the viewer's perception and you can take advantage of this to make your characters unique and eye-catching.
how to draw eyes
The first thing to know before designing different types of eyes is to know how to draw an eye itself, below I will show you a quick and easy way to draw eyes. My drawing style is mainly anime but these rules are very common and are used to draw eyes in most styles.
The first step is to draw a circle which represents the eyeball, then we make a cross through the circle, this will serve as a guide to know where to put the other strokes.
The first stroke we will make will be a semi curve at the top, we start in the middle of the sphere, we go up that stroke and then we go back down to create an arc.
We will do the second stroke at the bottom. It starts out as a straight line that slopes slightly downwards and then curves upwards,
then we will make a circle in the center of the eye which will be the pupil.
Then it only remains to do the details around the eye, such as the line of the mobile eyelid and the eyebrow.
I show you more examples below of eyes drawn using this guide:
To locate the eyes on a face there are many ways to do it, the most common and the most used is to make a cross through the face and use it as a guide.
We can use the ear as a guide since the eye starts approximately in the middle of the ear and ends at the end of it.
A method that I use to be able to locate the eyes well is to draw a mask which serves as a guide to be able to draw the eyes more easily.
It would only remain to draw the eyes on the face.
Design of eyes according to their shape
The eyes have three basic shapes: circle, square and triangle. These forms are associated with different behaviors and traits and can be very useful when designing your character and giving them a personality that is more appropriate to the role they play in the story.
► Circle: We usually associate circular eyes with positive feelings, optimistic, tender, adventurous, innocent characters.
► Triangle: Triangular shaped eyes are associated with growth, focus, support, inspiration, vitality, equality, justice, science and power.
► Inverted triangle: means the opposite of the triangle. we associate the eyes in the form of a descending triangle with instability, tiredness, caution.
► Square: square-shaped eyes are related to strength, solidity, security and order.
The size of the eyes also influences the perception of the character, large eyes are related to youth and innocence and small eyes are related to experience and maturity.
Express emotions through the eyes
The eyes are a very important part of the face, therefore if the face has a sad expression, this should also be reflected in the look, so you will make your characters have much more personality.
Add details!
Adding details can help you greatly enhance your character design to make them unique and more eye-catching. Here are some examples.
For characters who don't sleep enough, it's ideal to add dark circles as it helps me better represent their personality.
Adding makeup is also a good option to make your character look more attractive.
Adding marks like moles or scars can also make your character look attractive. monochrome colors are fine but putting two or more colors in your character's eyes can make them look more unique!
conclusion
I hope these tips have been helpful to improve the eye design of your characters! don't be afraid to experiment with combinations of colors and shapes in the eyes of your characters and the important thing is that you like the final result of this one :D
