FILLING TOOL easy and quick tutorial.
Introduction
Hello, I'm Zuzu and I want to teach you in a simple way how to use the fill tool in Clip Studio Paint.
The fill tool is a great help when it comes to making the base color of a drawing or an illustration since it can save a lot of time in the coloring process. Next I will show you its different functions and settings so that you can use this tool easily and quickly.
Clip Studio Paint has a fill tool which you can find in the toolbar.
Let's start by explaining the settings of this tool and what each option is for.
Tolerance
The tolerance determines how many pixels of similar color the tool will fill. The more tolerance you have, the more the color will lengthen.
area scaling
When we use the fill tool we can see that when we add color to a drawing there is an unfilled border between the outline and the color we just added, this is solved by activating area scaling.
This option has the function of expanding the color fill so that there are no gaps left unfilled. The default value of this option is ideal however you can also adjust it according to your needs and preferences.
in the image I used the lineart at 20% of the opacity so that the changes in the adjustment could be better appreciated, the higher the area scaling value, the closer the fill color will be to the edge of the lineart.
Close the gap
This option is for the fill tool to ignore any unfilled spaces in your lineart.
in the circle you can clearly see a missing space but with this option activated the empty space is ignored and the lineart is taken as if it were a continuous line. the larger the gap in the line, the greater the value selected in this option will have to be. you can increase the value by selecting the > arrow and typing in the amount you need (for the example I used a value of 50 but if the gap in your linear is smaller you can use a smaller value).
smoothed
This option is on by default, it is used to give the fill a softer edge, and turning it off will give it a rougher edge.
Refer only to edited layer / Refer to other layers
In the first sub tool the ''refer to other layers'' option is disabled.
This means that the fill tool will only be able to paint things that are on the layer that we are editing.
As we can see in the image, I am located in my lineart layer so the fill tool paints inside the lines that are in that layer, but how do I do it if I want to paint below the lineart? for that you have to activate the ''refer to other layers'' option.
Within this option we can vary the layers that we want the fill tool to take into account when applying color.
all layers
With the first option the fill tool will take into account all the lines that are in all the visible layers that you have on your canvas
As we can see in the image, I am painting on a layer below my lineart but the fill tool takes into account all the visible layers when applying the color.
reference layer
With this option the fill tool will only take into account the layer you have selected as ''reference layer''. To make a layer your ''reference layer'' we go to our lineart layer and select the symbol.
As we can see in the image, I am painting on a layer below my lineart but the fill tool takes into account the reference layer when applying the color.
Note: you can select multiple layers as ''reference layer''.
selected layer
With this option the fill tool will only take into account the layers that you have selected. To select a layer you just have to press the transparent box next to the layer so that a '' check '' appears.
As we can see in the image, I am painting on a layer below my lineart but the fill tool takes into account the selected layer when applying the color.
Note: The layer will be automatically deselected if you click on another layer, therefore this option is recommended to paint something momentarily but it is preferable that for the lineart you use the ''reference layer'' option.
layer in folder
With this option the fill tool will only take into account the layers that are inside a folder.
As we can see in the image, I am painting on a layer below my lineart but the fill tool takes into account the layers inside the folder when applying the color.
Fill up to vector path
You may also find this option very useful if you use the vector layer. It works the same way as ''area scaling'' in that it causes the fill tool to apply color up to the vector linear of the stroke
lock and fill
Sub tool has the function of a lasso tool, and as the name implies you just have to enclose which part of your lineart you want to color.
Paint unfilled area
This tool is meant to fill in those little blank spaces in your lineart that the other fill tools missed.
Final
Those are the basics of the fill tool. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this tutorial! :) I hope it helps everyone who reads this ♥ ♥
