Detect pressure

The reason why some people think that electric painting is difficult to draw is often not a problem with the equipment or software, but because the pressure sensitivity of the software and hardware is not adjusted properly. In fact, factors that affect the pressure sensitivity of electric painting and your painting experience There is more than one, so after you adjust one of the parts, if you still feel that it is not very easy to draw, you can adjust it from the following three places:

1. Hardware: Whether you are using a drawing tablet, drawing screen, drawing laptop or tablet, there are usually settings that allow you to adjust the pen pressure. You can make adjustments according to the hardware device you are using! But because there are so many types of equipment and brands, I won’t demonstrate them here.

2. Clip Studio Paint adjusts the pen pressure detection: Because the main software we use today is Clip Studio Paint, here we can adjust the pen pressure experience of our drawings through the built-in pen pressure adjustment detection of Clip Studio Paint

Go to File→Adjust pen pressure detection level, click here to open

A window will pop up asking you to draw lines directly on the canvas using your usual drawing habits. After drawing a few strokes, Clip Studio Paint will automatically help you adjust the pen pressure to suit you.

3. Brush settings: The software and hardware settings of the pen pressure most affect our drawing experience, but for people with a keen sense of drawing, this may not be enough. At this time, we can enter into more subtle settings. The adjustment is to adjust the brush settings!

In Clip Studio Paint, I usually choose the dip pen → G pen to make adjustments first, because this pen is very smooth and practical whether it is for drawing line drawings or comics. After adjusting this brush, I then use it according to similar Just adjust the parameters of other brushes!

After you click on the wrench in the lower right corner of the pen's tool properties, you may feel that the brush settings are too complicated and you don't know where to start. That's okay! If you want to adjust the pen pressure and feel in the general brush settings, you can only adjust the "Correction" and "Brush Start and End" parts!

The parameters in the picture are set by myself. You can use my parameters to draw and see first. If it still doesn't work well for you, you can adjust it according to your drawing habits!

Recommended brushes

Generally speaking, I personally think that the built-in brushes in Clip Studio Paint are easy to use. If you like the hand-painted texture, you can choose the "automatic pencil" brush among the pencil brushes. Its line color will be better than that of the pencil. The brush should be full; and those who like to use solid lines to draw line drawings can use the "G pen" brush among the water-based brushes.

But if you still want to try some brushes with different painting feel, I can recommend a few free brushes to you. You can download them and use them to draw.

1. The first set of brushes are five line painting brushes shared by a Korean painter 대. Each brush has a unique line performance. You can choose according to your preferences, and even adjust it to your own. Favorite brush setting parameters!

2. The second set of brushes is also shared by Korean painter 대, but this set is four pencil-textured brushes. Although it is a pencil-textured brush, there are actually one or two brushes that feel like an ink pen. Feeling, but you still need to try these painting techniques yourself!

3. The third set of brushes are line drawing brushes provided by a Japanese painter Aiich. The texture of this brush has an ink feel. Based on the drawings drawn by the painter himself, it looks good, but of course , having good brushes and tools does not necessarily mean that you can draw well. You still need to have a certain level of painting ability before you can use the tools to their full potential.

Writing gestures and strength

Basically, the first two steps here are at the tool level. If you already have drawing experience, after adjusting the pressure detection and brush tools, you can show off your skills and draw your own works! But for beginners who are just starting to learn to draw, I want to add some skills so that you can start drawing beautiful line drawings faster! First of all, we can start with the hand painting skills:

1. Writing gesture: For people who use electric painting, the range that they can draw is roughly the size of a drawing tablet or screen. Compared with hand-painted oil paintings or murals, it is actually much smaller, so when we write, When drawing lines, usually only the joints of the "fingers" and "wrists" are used to swing. When drawing, we can easily hold the brush lightly. When drawing a small range of lines, we only use our fingers to wave the brush lightly and keep other parts of our hands still. When we need to draw longer lines, we only use our wrists to wave lightly. The brush and other parts of the hand remain motionless.

2. The strength of the stroke: In addition to the gesture of the stroke, the strength of the stroke will also affect the appearance of the lines we draw. When drawing electronically, people who write with heavier strokes are generally more likely to draw slowly and have jittery lines. Therefore, if you want to draw smooth lines, you still need to adjust your stroke strength. Try By holding the brush lightly and swaying the brush to make yourself more relaxed, you will find that the lines you draw will be smoother, silkier, and more layered!

3 exercises for drawing lines

After we know how to adjust the gestures and strength of the pen, you may not know how to start drawing good-looking lines. It doesn't matter. Here I will introduce to you three practice methods for drawing lines that beginners can quickly start!

1. Straight line practice: Here we can first practice drawing straight lines using a Tianzi network, and try to make every straight line we draw the same length, and then master the basic stability of drawing lines.

2. Curve practice: In curve practice, we can draw curves and lines like drawing sonar symbols. During the drawing process, try to keep the distance between curves consistent. This can train us in grabbing lines and You can have a better grasp of the distance between lines!

3. A little divergence and a little concentration practice: In a little divergence practice, we need to practice keeping every line we draw from a point at the same distance; while a little concentration practice means that every line we draw is at the same distance. Able to accurately draw on a point to practice the accuracy of our line drawing

The secret to drawing beautiful lines

After we adjust the gesture and strength of the pen and do some line drawing exercises, you may be able to draw good-looking lines, but to draw good-looking line drawings, you will need more painting knowledge and skills. Of course, I can’t finish it all here, but I can provide you with a few tips for drawing line drawings, so that you can use these tips to improve the aesthetic level of your line drawings!

Before we understand these tips, I would like to let you compare the differences between these two line drawings. I believe you will feel that the line drawing on the left is obviously more beautiful than the line drawing on the right, but you can’t tell why, right? Because the devil is in the details, this is where we will delve into line drawing techniques next!

line thickness

Many times we see some painters using pencils to draw line drawings that look very good. Why is this? This is because even with a pencil, when the strokes are of different weights, the lines will obviously have different thicknesses, and such a line drawing state of different thicknesses will make people feel the liveliness and vitality of the lines! But if the lines you draw are all of the same thickness, it will feel like a line drawing in a children's coloring book. The lines are stiff and lifeless, like a cage that confines color. Therefore, when drawing line drawings, you can relax appropriately. When swaying the brush, let the lines flow freely without forcing yourself to draw every line uniformly and perfectly.

The reality of lines

In addition to the thickness of the lines, you will find that when some painters draw line drawings, the lines may not be connected. Even so, you will not find anything unsightly in this state of interlaced virtual and real lines. ,Right? The reason is very simple, because under reasonable circumstances, people will actually automatically fill in the unconnected parts in their minds, and then complete the entire picture in their minds. In such a process, the viewer will also be visually confused. There is another brand new feeling, and people may even feel that those disappearing lines have a hazy beauty! Therefore, when drawing line drawings, we do not necessarily have to make all the lines connected together. It is also good to make some lines appear intertwined between virtual and real under reasonable circumstances!

square circle of line

Controlling the thickness and virtuality of lines depends on the strength of our writing, but the square and circle of lines is a choice we use to express with lines, and this choice can help your lines switch between hardness and roundness, thereby making your lines more flexible. Your line drawing creates a sense of flow, making your work appear more lively! So when you are drawing a line drawing, if you feel that the picture is always unreadable, you can try adding some square and round lines to the line drawing~

After we know these tips for drawing line drawings, I will give you a simple demonstration to let you feel how we can actually apply these tips to our line drawings!

If you want to see the demonstration process, you can directly watch the video shared above this article ~
