A brief guide to fashion sketch with Clip Studio Paint
Fashion sketches are used to illustrate ideas or solve design problems. They don't need to be realistically proportioned to the human form. Instead, focus on the mood/attitude and visualization of clothes.
1. Create fashion templates (croquis)
In fashion terms, croquis are human figures that can be used as templates to trace and draw designs on.
You can use the 3d models from Clip Studio Assets, but most of these models are suitable for illustration, not for fashion drawing. Figurative fashion templates are often exaggerated to a nine- or ten-heads proportion. The legs are often very long especially on female models (½ of total height).
You can still use the 3d figures for reference. Use a serie of circles and lines to mark the joints then draw them again with longer limbs.
Make these into material so you can re-use them later whenever you come up with a new design.
Drag-and-drop them from the Material tab when you need them again.
2. Sketch and color
Create a new layer(s) over the template then go wild with your sketch. It's good to use brushes that mimic real life drawing media, like pencil, pastel, watercolor, marker etc.
I use this set for reference (big thanks to the author):
You can always use more layers to refine your drawing or to separate the line and colors.
You can even use colored/textured background like with real life media.
3. Materials and textures
It's easy to create different kinds of fabric with digital softwares like Clip Studio Paint.
You can download them from CSP Asset, such as these:
Or you can make them yourself to better mesh with your style.
To make continuous curve kind like chain and pearl strings:
Select your image (don't leave empty spaces at the start and the end)
Go to Edit > Register material > Images...
Duplicate a chain-like default brush and change the brush tip to the one you've created.
To make seamless texture, you can follow my other tutorial:
Apply texture using mask: create selection with the mask button on the layer tab. If you click on the mask, you can use any color to reveal more or use transparent/an eraser to hide the texture/pattern behind.
Change the size of the pattern using the bounding box and change its color using Layer color.
Using real-life scan of fabric material is another option.
