How to Make Custom Paper-like Brushes
Introduction
Hello, Nice to meet you! I'm a Visual Communication Design student from Indonesia by means of studying art at University.
This is my first time attending Clip Studio Paint's Tips of the month! Here, I'd like to share my tips on how to make custom paper-like textured using simple traditional art tools!
Materials I used:
Paper (I use mix-media type of paper, you may use other type of paper like watercolor, printing paper, all depends on your preference)
2B Pencil
Scanner or Phone
Pencil Texture
Start off with your paper, scribble some strokes with a bit of pressure to emphasize the paper texture. But not to make the strokes too light or too dark
Scanning and Editing
After I made some textures on paper, I took a pic with a phone scanner app, set to "lighten" mode
Make a New canvas by clicking [File] --> [New] with the size of 900 x 900 pixels with 300 resolution. It not necessarily about the expression color, as long the expression color may be changed on the layer settings.
I use the Lasso Tool circling the Textures draft. More or Less, they would be look like as shown above
Go to [Layer Properties] to change the expression color from "Color" to "Gray"
If you satisfied with the result, click "Apply expression color"
After that, go to [Edit tab] --> [Convert Brightness to Opacity]. Export the textures in PNG file. Since every new file has a default white background don't forget to hide the "Paper" layer in order to make the transparency of the texture.
Registering the Material
Once you exported, open the file, click [Edit} on the Menu tab, then click Register material. Some steps by steps ahead
1. Since it is meant to be a texture, check the box of "Use for paper texture"
2. Select the folder would you like to store, choose any default folder or create your own folder.
Paste operation settings
3. Click "Scale up/down". This operation allows you to adjust the size when the material is pasted. You can adjust the size of the material if you use it as an overlay texture.
4. Then, click "Tiling". Tiling made materials to be arranged as a tile.
(a) Set to repeat. The texture will repeat as shown in the picture.
(b) Set to "Vertical and Horizontal" as it will repeat vertically and horizontally.
5. Click "OK" after finished the settings
In an opacity of 15-50% Overlay mode, it makes a nice soft texture above your drawings. You also can adjust the opacity and the intensity by zoom in or zoom out the texture, basically have fun applying the texture!
Applying texture to brush
Select or duplicate any brush you like to apply.
From Sub Tool Detail, go to the Texture tab. There you will see the Sub Tool Panel on the right side.
A small explanation about the Sub tool Panel:
-The higher the texture density, the more exaggerated the details of the textures on the brush.
-Reverse density inverts the black and white values of the texture
-Emphasize density gives the intensity of the texture a much crispier look.
Click the button beside texture text to choose the texture. You may adjust the sub tool panel until it meets your preference.
More or less, some examples of brushes using this texture:
Brush types I use in respective order:
1. Dense Watercolor
2. Opaque Watercolor
3. Soft Airbrush
4. Flat Marker
5. Real G-Pen
6. Blur Tool
The Spherical object and Cyan-Magenta-Yellow to show how it would look like if it's being blended and mixed.
Conclusion
I doodled an icon using all of those brushes settings with the paper texture to sharpen the feel of traditional art like look.
That's all for my tutorial, thank your for reading and hope it helps you!
