[Dual brush] has been added to the Brush and Pen customization settings in Clip Studio Paint Ver.1.10.10.

What you can do with [Dual brushes] in Clip Studio Paint

・The [Dual brush] function allows you to set a second brush shape (stroke) to a single brush. By setting up and combining the overlapping brushes, you can create strokes with new shapes.

・The [Dual brush] feature in Clip Studio Paint allows the user to, in addition to setting multiple brush tip images as they would with a regular brush, combine color and monochrome tip images while maintaining their RGB values.

・[Dual brushes] aren’t only for pen and brush tools, but can also be used with [Figure], [Frame Border] and [Balloon] tools as well.

Note: You will not be able to edit canvases in Ver.1.10.9 or earlier if using [Dual brushes] on Frame Borders, Balloons or Vector layers.

Note: Brush materials with [Dual brush] settings cannot be imported to Ver.1.10.9 or earlier.

■ Vital Dual Brush Information! 1) Combining brushes

Depending on the shape of the second brush, you can get a number of different expressions from the same brush.

■ Vital Dual Brush Information! 2) Blending mode

Even if the main brush and the second brush are combined in the same way, depending on the [Blending mode] set, the stroke will change.

Note: the [Grass] and [Lace] used in examples 1) and 2) are the initial sub tools which were renewed in Ver.1.10.10.

How to set up Dual brushes [EX/PRO]

[Dual brushes] can be set up by enabling [Dual brush] in [Sub tool detail] palette > [2 - Brush shape].

Note: The [Sub tool detail] palette cannot be used in Clip Studio Paint DEBUT.

The [2-Brush Tip], [2-Spray Effect], [2-Stroke], and [2-Paper Quality] settings under [2-Brush Shape] are all [Dual brush] settings. You can use the same settings as for the main brush.

Refer to the following page for more information on the Sub Tool Detail Palette.

From Ver. 1.11.0, it is possible to use [Color mixing] when [Dual brush] is enabled. The [Color mixing] mode will automatically set to [Smear].

Note that when [Dual brush] is enabled, it is not possible to configure the [Watercolor edge].

Setting other brush strokes to your dual brush [EX/PRO]

You can create a [Dual brush] freely by registering a brush tip image and its settings. However, you can easily create a [Dual brush] by registering the stroke of your brush you already have that you like, or has a good texture, as a [Brush shape].

1) Bring up the [Sub tool detail] palette of the brush you want to register

Note: The [Sub tool detail] palette can be brought up by selecting from the [Window] menu at the top of the screen, or by clicking the tool icon at the bottom of the [Tool property] palette.

2) Click the [Add to presets] button in [Sub tool detail] palette > [Brush shape] to register.

3) You can set the registered [Brush shape] by 1) selecting the brush you want to use as the main brush from the list at the bottom of [2 - Brush shape] and 2) clicking [Apply brush shape].

3) Once you’ve adjusted the [2 - Brush Size] in line with the main brush, you are done.

Linking to main brush size:

By enabling [Link to main brush size] in [2 - Brush shape], when you change the [Brush Size] of the main bush, the [2 - Brush Size] will also change accordingly.

Note:

[Link to main brush size] has also been added to [Spraying effect] > [Particle size] in Clip Studio Paint Ver.1.10.10. This can be set for both the main and second brush.

[Dual brush] Blending modes

The Dual brush Blending modes can be set to [Mode] under [2 - Brush shape] from any of the following 13 blending modes: [Normal], [Multiply], [Add (Glow)], [Subtract], [Darken], [Lighten], [Screen], [Overlay], [Color dodge], [Color burn], [Linear burn], [Hard mix] and [Height (Linear)].

■Applying RGB values

Check [Apply RGB value] if you would like to apply the color or monochrome brush tip image to the second brush as is.

If unchecked, the alpha value (transparency) of the second brush stroke will be blended, but will not be affected by the color of the brush tip image.

■Blending mode examples

Note: [Height (Linear)] is a blending mode that can only be set for dual brushes. It is similar to Subtract, but the density of the brush shows up more intensly.

Default Sub Tools that make use of the Dual brush function

Let’s take a look at the default sub tools that make use of the dual brush function along with their settings.

■[Pencil] tool > [Pencil] group > [Pencil]

The main brush, which is set up to draw lines and letters easily. and the second brush, which has a diffused look, like when a pencil is dragged flat against paper, are set up to switch in and out when the pen is tilted.

■[Brush] tool > [Watercolor] > [Wet wash]

This is a combination of the main brush which has a blotchy feel and the uneven diffused brush.

By setting the [Height (Linear)] Blending mode, the overall density of the main brush is expressed with some of the white uneven parts of the second brush bleeding through.

■[Decoration] tool > [Effect] > [Glitter]

This combines two different types of diffused brush.

Since the [Dual brush] Blending mode is set to [Add (Glow)] and [Apply RGB value] is on, only the parts where the two brushes’ strokes overlap are randomly brightened.

■[Decoration] tool > [Clothing] > [Zipper]

This is a ribbon brush where the main brush is one side of the zipper and the brush tip image of the fastened zipper is registered as the second brush.

Because [Apply RGB value] is turned on, when the [Dual brush] is turned on, the main brush stroke will be hidden.

You can easily switch between the two strokes by toggling [Dual brush] on and off.

In addition to the above brushes, other sub tools that make use of the [Dual brush] function have been added to Clip Studio Paint Ver. 1.10.10. For further details on the new sub tools, please refer to the following article.
