How to draw a "calm space" that is different from character illustrations

What is the "calm space" depicted in the painting?

・Characteristics of "normal character illustrations"

First of all, typical character illustrations

almost always emphasize elements like "active" and "exciting."

This is because it makes it easier to portray the character's charms.

To achieve this, you use techniques like

  • Tilt the screen at an angle

  • Make the eye level around the waist to chest, and tilt the face up

  • Make the hair and clothes flutter

  • Emphasize the character

Something like this in concrete terms.

Of course, depending on the intention of the picture and the genre, it may deviate from the above characteristics, and in some cases it may not apply at all, but even in those cases, as long as it is a character illustration, it will include elements and mechanisms that will create something exciting and dramatic in the viewer's mind.

However, in a "calm space," such elements are essentially distracting and should be eliminated as much as possible.

・Characteristics of "illustrations of a calm space"

The characteristics of character illustrations listed above are the most typical ways to add movement to the screen, so if you remove them you can create a calm room. In other words, what you need to do to express this is:

  • The screen should be horizontal

  • Eye level should be around the chest to neck, or looking down

  • Clothes and hair should not flutter

  • Don't emphasize the character too much

It will be.

・A little more detail on the appropriate eye level for this

Eye level basically means that the higher you look down on the main subject, the less dynamic the image becomes.

If it's around chest to neck height, it can create a moderate sense of realism,

Placing it at "eye level" is not a good idea here.

Eye level is normal in real life, but when you draw it, it's more like...

It's a special expression that emphasizes "being subjective" and "being life-size" to the fullest,

and goes perfectly with tense subjects like mysteries, psychological suspense, and social dramas.

It's very dramatic.

It's so dramatic that it's honestly hard to use as an expression of a calm space,

so it's probably best to avoid it for now.

Considering all of the above, it would be appropriate to avoid eye level and take it slightly higher in this case.

Before taking the perspective

・What is Perth Division?

First, please take a look at this diagram.

When you place this board in a three-dimensional space, where do you think it is exactly halfway between the back and the front?

Here's the answer, and how to get it.

The intersection of the diagonal lines is the midpoint.

You're probably thinking, "That's further back than I expected."

When a beginner adds bold perspective to an action-packed illustration by eye,

the midpoint will most likely end up being too close to the front,

so it tends to end up being off like that.

If you try to determine the midpoint based solely on intuition and imagination,

unless you have excellent spatial awareness,

it's safe to say that it will basically end up being wrong.

So even just remembering the division into two parts is very useful.

Also,

By using diagonals like this, you can create infinite divisions, such as the current division number + 1 (or the current division number x 2), so keep this in mind as part of your perspective drawing knowledge.

However, if you're just using it roughly and intuitively, 2 divisions will be enough.

・Draw a rough image before drawing the perspective

Make a rough draft before drawing in perspective.

The reason is that if you start drawing perspective in earnest with a ruler, the freedom of rough drafting can turn into a very restrictive task at the stage when it is easiest to let your imagination flow and refine your ideas when you're running your pencil freehand, so it would be a shame to kill that momentum.

That said, if you are too free, it will be difficult to match the perspective later on.

That's why I mentioned how to determine the midpoint by dividing as prior knowledge.

If you just know how to divide in two, it shouldn't be too strange.

Finally, take the perspective

・Normal perspective ruler

You can find Clip Studio Paint's perspective ruler here.

You can also create a perspective ruler from here.

Here, when you draw two lines, their intersection point automatically becomes the eye level,

and if you add more lines, you can snap to that eye level.

In either case, if the ruler is on, shapes such as straight lines and rectangles

will automatically snap to the ruler, so make use of this convenient feature.

・Create a perspective ruler for a 3D model

Aside from the regular perspective ruler introduced above,

there is a very useful, powerful, and intuitive technique that is unique to Clip Studio Paint.

It's simple to use; just drag and drop a 3D primitive cube

to create a 3D object layer.

3D layers automatically generate rulers that are linked to the ground,

so they are useful as handy perspective rulers.

The ruler functions the same even if it's not a cube,

but there's no reason not to use a box to grasp a box-shaped space.

Also, there's a possibility that the 3D viewpoint will change due to a mistake in operation,

You can prevent this by locking the layer.

The ruler is still valid in this state.

Any of the above methods will not cause any problems when it comes to perspective.

・Actually create a rough sketch from the perspective

As already mentioned, it's best to use the line tool.

From draft to finishing

・Draft, line drawing

Drafts of characters, interiors, etc.

This time I wanted it to look hand-drawn, so I drew it freehand along the outline.

Although things have deviated from the original plan

Completion and its explanation

It's complete.

Well, at the beginning of this article I said that "in expressing a calm space, excitement and drama are elements to be eliminated."

But it's no good if there's nothing fun about it.

So.

Since it's my favorite private space,

I've crammed it full of my favorite items to the point that it might feel cramped and oppressive to others if they saw it.

I think it would be fine to put even more in there.

Also, by placing items with a lot of information around the outer edges of the screen,

the aim is to draw the eye in a circular motion.

That's all for this TIPS.

Thank you for reading.
