Draw eyes in pop colors!
Making of video
Hello, this is Extreme Natto.
The theme of this TIPS is drawing eyes, but
I believe that "just drawing eyes is not enough to explain how to draw eyes", so
I will also draw the characters and background.
The deformed elements of the eyes
Manga-style illustrations are characterized by the use of deformations that incorporate real-life elements into the picture.
In the case of eyes,
The three-dimensional shape of the eyelashes
The pupil that is slightly set back from the iris
The way the curved surface wraps around when viewed at an angle
are some of these things.
Other examples include the lines of the double eyelids, the reflection of the eyelashes, and the shadows they cast.
The pattern is created by selecting and mixing such elements, and the amount of deformation.
The eyes are the most noticeable feature, but...
This time I'm not just drawing the eyes, I'm drawing the character and the background too.
The reason is that,
Although the eyes are the most important piece of the picture
They are still just one piece
This time it's a colorful picture, so I drew it in a pop style like this,
If the worldview was more of a fantasy world with a horror feel, I wouldn't do the same thing.
I wouldn't change it that much up until the line drawing stage, but from the painting stage onwards, I have to make sure it matches the worldview.
Specific steps before painting the eyes
Rough sketch → Draft → Line drawing
The rough sketch gives the general shape,
and the rough draft is the process of picking out the lines. At this point, you also adjust the position.
If the rough sketch is neat enough to be a finished work, the quality of the line drawing will improve as you trace it and add nuance.
As a preparation for drawing that makes the most of the eyes,
the pose and hairstyle are designed from the rough draft stage to draw the eye to the space outlined in red.
background
In order to keep the overall image of the painting consistent, it's best to paint the background roughly before you paint the characters.
Character painting
This time, the eyes are the main focus, so I didn't go into too much detail.
However, I thought I'd add some paint-like splashes of color to the hair.
Painting the eyes: the real thing
I'll use a standard method to paint the white of the eye and the shadows on the iris.
A colorful pattern inside the iris.
This matches the worldview of the painting.
I drew it with the intention of depicting a deformed version of some kind of light being reflected in the iris in a complex way.
I added a reddish light from above the eyelashes and the reflection of the color of the eye from below.
I also added some red to the edges to add a lively, rosy look.
Both of these are unrealistic expressions that can only be achieved through art.
While adding details to the eyes, add details to the body as well to balance the overall look.
Paint the light that represents the reflection of the space (here we select light green) on the pupil in normal or comparison (light) mode, lowering the opacity appropriately.
Create a normal layer on top of that and add highlights.
Even if you think it's finished, if you look back at it and think something is not quite right, revise it until you're satisfied.
This isn't as much of a problem for manga, but for illustrations, you should work on perfecting it to your heart's content. This is especially true for the eyes.
Finish
This is the piece that was completed after going through the above process.
Thank you for reading this far.
I hope you find it useful.
