Many "gradation sets" are available on the official material site "CLIP STUDIO ASSETS" of Christa.

The materials I have published are one of them, but I have received inquiries several times saying, "I don't know how to use the gradation set...".

That should be it! Unlike brushes and pattern materials (which can be used immediately by dragging and dropping from the material palette!), the introduction method is a little troublesome... it is special.

In this TIPS, we will try to solve your doubts about the gradient set as smoothly as possible, and to have you enjoy using the gradient set to your heart's content.

I will explain how to use the downloaded gradation set material with Crysta (and its utilization idea) ◎

It's very easy and convenient once you learn how to introduce materials! that's why! I would love for you to use it! !

The gradation set is good~~~!

  • “What is a gradation set in the first place? It's a content for beginners, so I'm already using it! For those who say, I think it's written quite normal. perhaps.

[Glossary] Gradation tool? set? map?

☆ First, let's talk about three confusing terms in this article.

■ Gradation Tool = Coloring!

... probably the one that comes to mind when you hear the illustration software [gradation].

Draw a gradation directly on the entire layer or within the selected area.

■『Gradation Set』 = Materials!

... A material that summarizes the color data of the gradation tool.

I think many of the people reading this article have just downloaded the material published on ASSETS. That's it.

■ "Gradient map" = Color correction!

… is a type of tonal correction that uses a gradient set (or an original gradient).

It might be easier to understand if you think of it as a [filter that changes the color of the screen].

If you understand the above three differences, I think you can read the following explanation smoothly.

Now, let's talk about the theme "gradation set"!

① What can you do with gradation set materials?

Gradient sets are mainly used in two ways.

[1] Use as a "gradation map" for color correction

・ Adjust the color of the screen like a filter in a processing app

・ Add color to the illustration drawn in grayscale as a grisaille painting method

→ For details, see "(3) Use a gradation set as a gradation map"!

[2] Register to the "Gradient Tool" and draw directly on the canvas

・You can use the gradation as it is for drawing the sky etc.

→For more information, see "(4) Make the gradation set a sub tool gradation"!

② Register the downloaded gradation set in Crysta

・Before that, “How do you download materials? ], please refer to this official TIPS.

Let's first [register] the gradation set (= ready to use in your own Crysta) so that you can use the downloaded materials in Crysta!

I'll show you two ways to do that.

The route is different, but the result is the same.

[Registration method [A]] (☆ This method has fewer steps and is recommended!)

1. After downloading the material, open the [Material] palette and select any material.

2. Click the [Paste Material] icon at the bottom of the screen → Registration is complete.

[Addendum] With the UI change in ver1.9.5 (December 2019 update), the icon has been changed.

[Registration method [B]]

1. When you open [Detailed settings] from the properties of the gradient tool, the "Edit gradient" screen opens.

(If the tool property window is not displayed on the screen, select [Sub Tool Detail] from [Window] on the menu bar and you will find the [Detailed Settings] button.)

2. Click the spanner icon and select [Load set material].

3. From the "Load set material" menu that opens, select any material and click [OK] to complete registration.

[Frequently asked questions about material registration]

Q. "I dragged and dropped (swiped) a gradation set onto the tool palette, but a prohibited ( ) mark appears and I cannot register it as a tool."

A. You are probably confusing "gradient tool" and "gradient set".

Since the gradation set is not a single tool but a [material that collects color data], it cannot be registered as a sub tool at once by dragging and dropping.

Therefore, it is necessary to register the gradation data to the sub tool individually.

The registration method will be explained in “④ Make a gradation set a sub tool gradation”!

③ Use the registered gradation set as a "gradation map"

Let's adjust the color tone of the screen like a filter, and use the "gradation map" used for the grisaille painting method!

There are two ways to use gradient maps.

(The finished layer data will differ depending on how you do it, so use it properly)

[1] How to use it as a "color correction layer" (☆ Recommended because it's easy to edit later!)

"It's like putting one filter on."

1. From the menu [Layer] (or right-click on the layer palette) → [New color correction layer] → [Gradient map]

2. Double-click any gradation → [OK]

[2] How to apply a gradation map directly to the selected layer

"This is an image of repainting the entire layer."

1. Expand the menu [Edit] → [Color correction] → [Gradient map]

2. Double-click any gradation → [OK]

☆ Personally, I prefer to use the former color tone correction layer to adjust the density and

It is recommended because it is easy to edit later, such as changing the layer mode.

For the image below, I changed the layer density and mode of the gradation map and played around with it like a filter. It's fun to change the atmosphere of the screen!

☆ You can use it to color flower petals and jewels like this, or combine it with [Contour line paint] to create a complex gradation.

④ Set the registered gradation set as the sub tool "gradation tool"

Apply your favorite gradient to the sub tool and draw the sky!

Editing an existing gradation will overwrite it, so first create a new gradation.

1. Right click on the gradation sub tool palette, [Create custom sub tool] → [OK]

2. Open [Detailed settings] in the tool properties of the new gradation you created, and open the gradation set you just registered from the "Edit gradation" screen.

(If the tool property window is not displayed on the screen, select [Window] → [Sub Tool Detail] from the menu bar to find the [Detailed settings] button.)

3. Select any gradation by double-clicking → [OK], tool registration is complete!

(It's a little troublesome to create new tools one by one and register them...

A function such as batch registration is not implemented at the moment, so if you want to register a lot of tools, please be patient and register quickly...)

"Once the tool has been registered, all that remains is to draw." Yeah!

In addition to the ones introduced here, CLIP STUDIO ASSETS publishes gradation sets with various ideas. Please search for it!

Above, I introduced how to use the gradation set as a memorandum.

I hope that this article has made you feel like using a gradation set.

The gradation set is good~~~~~! !

P.S. Here is the gradation set that is mainly used in the commentary image of this article ◎
