Draw a retro kimono with gradient
1.First of all
CLIP STUDIO PAINT has various gradation functions.
In this making, we will draw a kimono with a retro atmosphere using two colors, “color from drawing color to transparent color” and “stripe”.
There are three types of gradient shapes: "straight line", "circle", and "ellipse".
"Line": The color changes in the drag direction.
"Circle" ... The color changes around the drag start point.
"Ellipse": Similar to a circle, but the size and angle of the ellipse can be adjusted.
This time, "straight line" and "circle" were used.
2. Create rough and line drawings
First, create a rough drawing.
The impression of a kimono changes greatly depending on the type, arrangement and color of the pattern.
This time, I finished it with a bob cut, a simple hair ornament, and a large pattern in a retro atmosphere.
All line drawings are created separately for each part using the "vector layer".
I used the default G pen to draw a person and a millipen to draw a kimono pattern, and divided the line drawing folder between the person and the pattern.
After creating a line drawing, be sure to set it to the “reference layer”.
In order to use the "automatic selection tool" when painting, be careful not to create gaps as much as possible.
- This time, the mask is applied to the line of the overlapping part, but there is no problem if you do not draw the line of the overlapping part.
This time, the color was changed to white only for the pattern line drawing.
You can easily change the color by clipping the layer on the folder.
3.undercoat
First, we will roughly apply each part.
Since the pen is inserted so that there is no gap, you can select only the part you want to paint by clicking on it with the "Automatic selection tool".
At this time, make sure that the check mark in "Stop at vector center line" is checked.
You can paint neatly without creating a gap between the line and the color.
Also, if the creation method is set to "Additional selection", multiple locations can be selected simultaneously.
Automatic selection → solid painting (or filling) is repeated, and painting proceeds at a stretch.
- Colors are added outside the selection to make it easier to understand.
If you divide the pattern layer folder when inserting the pen, you can work efficiently by hiding the folder.
After the painting process is over, apply "Protection of transparent parts" to all layers.
Similarly, the kimono pattern is painted separately.
The undercoat is now complete.
4. gradation
Next, apply gradation to the kimono pattern.
This time, we used a "straight line" gradient for the grass and a "circle" gradient for the small flowers.
Surround the grass area roughly with the lasso tool and drag from the tip of the vine.
Drag the small flowers from the center outwards, applying a yellow gradient.
Please apply carefully one by one.
Next, apply stripes to the kimono.
The angle and width of the stripe change depending on the direction of dragging and its length.
The longer the length you drag, the wider the stripe, so adjust the length of the drag to the ideal width.
In the same way, select "shadow area", "lighted area", "color change area" → repeat gradation.
If you are not sure about the color of the shadow, create a “multiplication layer” on the work layer, clip it, and paint it with light blue to make it easier to unite.
Conversely, orange and yellow-based colors are painted in the "normal layer" or "addition layer" on the part that is exposed to light.
The shape is almost completed only by undercoat + gradation.
5.Finish
In addition, I will draw "Kimono and Obi shadow", "Hair highlights" and "Eyes".
Because it gives a rough shadow and light change with gradation, it is okay to draw a little.
Finally, apply a light blue gradation to the hair and belt on the back side with the "screen layer" to complete it.
Layering the screen layers creates a feeling of air and creates a soft atmosphere.
6. At the end
This time, the combination of solid painting and gradation was used a lot, but the atmosphere changes drastically depending on the combination such as gradation alone or increasing the color change.
Please try to draw in various combinations.
Thank you for reading.
