Introduction

✪ It is a pleasure to greet you again, this time we will see how to create some BRUSH inspired by a PENCIL.

I want to remind you that you can take my tutorials as a guide to develop it in your own way, since I think it is important to be intuitive and know how to adapt.

Without further ado let's start.

Preparation

✪ To create a BRUSH inspired by a REAL tool, the main thing we must have are REFERENCES, so I decided to scan a textured sheet, some strokes and a point with a real PENCIL that later will help us create the BRUSH.

Now you have to open the scanned in CLIP and SEPARATE IN LAYERS a part of the texture of the sheet and the strokes of the PENCIL.

✪ You can also take the textures of someone else, or ones that you have previously made, so if you want to skip the next part of the tutorial, I am happy to share mine here so you can use them.

Adjusting the foundations of BRUSH

✪ I recommend emphasizing the PAPER TEXTURE as much as possible, this will help us not to lose it later, we can achieve this by adjusting the brightness and contrast a little.

✪ To make it work better in the BRUSH we are going to remove the white in the texture as follows:

SELECT ➟ SELECT COLOR GAMUT and select the target in the image to later delete it.

✪ In this same way we are going to remove the white from the POINT with a PENCIL that we made since it will serve us later.

This is how it will be:

✪ The next step is important for setting up the BRUSH.

When your image is in COLOR format when registering your MATERIAL for the BRUSH it will stay the color you did it in, but if your layer is in GRAY it will allow the BRUSH to change according to the color you choose when using it.

To define the type of layer we are simply going to CLICK RIGHT on the LAYER and choose ➟ CONVERT LAYER.

In the EXPRESSION COLOR tab you will have to choose.

A ➟ Color - the color with which you register the material will stay.

B ➟ Gray - when you register your material it will be affected with the color you have chosen in your color palette.

As the BRUSH that we will make is inspired by a GRAPHITE PENCIL I am interested that the color of the palette does not affect the GRAY TONE of the PENCIL, so I will choose A (color), so that when we do the brush it cannot change from gray to another tone.

Register MATERIAL

✪ We already have our bases ready, now we are going to REGISTER the material.

We choose the PENCIL POINT layer and go to EDIT ➟ REGISTER MATERIAL ➟ IMAGE

and we will fill out what you ask for.

➟ The NAME OF THE MATERIAL to locate it later.

The settings for brush, like this we will not use it as a paper texture we only fill the part of ➟ USE FOR TIP SHAPE.

We tell you to allow it to be scaled ➟ (SCALE UP / DOWN)

Finally we are going to choose a folder where it will be saved in addition to ➟ TAGS to locate it later.

✪ Remember to register the PAPER TEXTURE too, in this case if we are going to set it to allow us to use for texture (USE FOR PAPER TEXTURE)

Creating the BRUSH

✪ Now we do have our bases ready to CREATE THE BRUSH.

We go to the window where the BRUSH are and in any of the BRUSH you are going to CLICK RIGHT and you are going to choose ➟ CREATE CUSTOM SUB TOOL.

This window will show you to put the BRUSH data, which you can also edit whenever you want.

✪ Once created and having selected our BRUSH we go to the ➟ TOOL PROPERTY window and CLICK on the ➟ NUT WRENCH THAT COMES DOWN in the window, this will open the ➟ SUB TOOL DETAIL window

✪ Already here we are going to choose the SETTINGS to give life to our BRUSH.

Let's start with choosing the shape of our BRUSH so let's go to ➟ BUSH TIP

where we are going to choose ➟ MATERIAL and pressing on the paper icon with nut will open the ➟ SELECT BRUSH TIP SHAPE window

Here we are going to look for the POINT OF PENCIL that we had previously REGISTERED.

We will leave the other settings as they are.

✪ Here comes the INTUITIVE and OBSERVATION part, let's think about the characteristics of the pencil associated with size, shape, use etc.

with that in mind let's ➟ BRUSH SIZE

I decided to leave the size at 1 since the real pencils are not thick.

✪ Now in the box next to it we are going to click for more ADJUSTMENTS,

since the REAL PENCIL is responsive to pressure (the more you press it, it generates a thicker line) that is why we are going to check the ➟ PEN PRESSURE box

and we will adjust a little the graph that has below.

Basically this curve adjusts how sensitive the brush is going to be with the pressure you make.

Although the REAL PENCIL when you press it becomes thicker, the change in size is not so marked, that's why I pulled the curve in direction A a little so that it responds to the pressure but the difference is not so marked.

✪ To make it a little clearer (see the image below),

the closer you get your curve to point A, your brush will be sensitive to pressure but you will have to press hard to make it notice the change in size.

On the other hand, if you pull it to point B you will not have to exert much pressure to notice the difference in size.

✪ The other point that I marked in ➟ SIZE ADJUSTMENTS is ➟ RANDOM, since the REAL PENCIL Stroke has a texture when you make a line you can notice some irregularities and this RANDOM box is going to help us do a little bit of these textures .

✪ Now we go to ➟ INK, which indicates the amount of "INK" in your BRUSH.

Thinking about the REAL PENCIL I noticed that when you make a stroke it does not completely leave its pigment, that is why I decided to give it an ➟ OPACITY of 90% and in more specific settings I marked that the OPACITY responds to the ➟ PRESSURE OF THE PEN, because equally if you put very LITTLE PRESSURE on your stroke you will hardly see the line you made, this feature helps the pencil to sketch, so I wanted to adjust the limit of the curve to 100% of B (as we saw above) since this will affect the visibility of our line according to the pressure we use.

✪ Followed in ➟ BLENDING MODE choose ➟ MULTIPLY, this because if we notice the REAL PENCIL each time we put a stroke on another it becomes darker and in this way we can emphasize that.

✪ The following ADJUSTMENTS that we are going to do are small details, in ➟ STROKE we are going to enable the ➟ CONTINUOUS SPRAYING box, it will make our PEN POINT that we previously saved to be continuously marked and we will not see a point every time we use the BRUSH.

➟ ANTI-ALIASING will indicate how blurred the edges of our BRUSH will be, as the PEN is mainly rigid, we will choose the point just after the hardest.

✪ The following ADJUSTMENT will determine a lot our BRUSH, which is the ➟ TEXTURE.

This is why we scan the PAPER TEXTURE, because as you know the REAL PENCIL marks the texture of the sheet we are using, in this case to give it that more realistic appearance we are going to attach the TEXTURE to the BRUSH.

So in ➟ TEXTURE we will put the one that we previously registered.

✪ We will also adjust the ➟ DENSITY of the TEXTURE, and as we know if you PRESS MORE the REAL PENCIL marks more the TEXTURE of the PAPER, so we will choose in the box of ➟ PEN PRESSURE and in this case I also added ➟ VELOCITY because it left an interesting effect .

Otro Here another point that I have not mentioned but it is just as important, is that you TEST, try as much as you want the brush while you are adjusting it, only then will you reach an ADJUSTMENT that will satisfy you.

✪ Finally in this section I marked ➟ APPLY TO EACH PLOT which refers to the fact that every time you click, the texture will be applied again, which helps us to emphasize it.

✪ The other tabs in SETTINGS I am not going to explain for now because (in addition to making the tutorial longer) they do not affect much in the creation of this BRUSH, but I invite you to check it on your own, always remember to test how it is affecting each setting to the BRUSH and COMPARE it with the REAL TOOL.

✪ Here for example I made some lines around which we scanned at the beginning to check how similar I could stay.

BRUSH of Textures and EFFECTS of PENCIL

✪ As we create our perfect PENCIL BRUSH we are going to create others that will help us fill with textures more comfortably and quickly.

Like for example when you fill with continuous lines of pencil like this example.

✪ Instead of drawing line by line we can create one from our BRUSH that helps us to speed it up.

so let's start by painting the base of our lines it doesn't matter that they are not completely straight as this gives more realism.

✪ But since we want them to be continuous lines, we are going to make some small adjustments.

First we remove the corners and then we cut them in half and put it directly where the other half ends to adjust so that they end in the same place.

If the explanation becomes complex, I leave you some images that I hope will help you.

✪ Do not worry if it is difficult for them to be continuous here I leave you my file.

✪ Since we have the lines follow ➟ REGISTER them as MATERIAL.

this time we are going to add the ➟ TILING since we want them to be continuous.

Once our material is registered we will create a new BRUSH.

And we go back to the settings to define this BRUSH.

✪ The above are basic settings, regarding how you will paint the BRUSH, and what will give all the functionality to this BRUSH is the part of ➟ TEXTURE

Where we are going to add the lines that we previously registered and we will indicate the angle that they will have in ➟ ROTATION ANGLE, which in this case I have set to 45.

✪ The idea with this brush is that it will always make the lines in the direction of the texture and you can play with different sizes of the brush to fill but this will not affect the direction of the lines.

and you can always adjust it to the direction that suits you.

Here are some examples of how the brush will work according to the angle you choose:

Trial, error and analysis

✪ I do not want to overwhelm you with more information or extend this tutorial further since having the base you can create infinite possibilities, so I am going to end the tutorial here.

But your exploration does not end, remember that the best way to create a BRUSH is TESTING, ANALYZING and CORRECTING until you get to something you like.

✪ It's simple just remember:

ANALYZE (with references) ➟ CREATE YOUR BASE ➟ REGISTER YOUR MATERIAL ➟ and CREATE YOUR BRUSH

Here I share some textures that I have managed to do based on the PENCIL BRUSH that we created and I invite you to try it. In red I mark the base and show the brush that has turned out.

✪ With what we saw, do you feel capable now?

let me know in the comments, I also share the materials folder that I used so you can review it and do the tests you like.

EXTRA TIP - Share your brush

✪ Once you have your BRUSH ready, right click on REGISTER SUB TOOL AS MATERIAL,

so you can save it with its settings in your materials that you can later share in CLIP STUDIO ASSETS so that thousands of other people can try it.
