For details on creating a canvas and configuring the settings, see "Before Drawing a Work in CLIP STUDIO PAINT" → "Preparations".

After creating a canvas, draw a draft while thinking about what kind of illustration you want to draw.

Preparing the Drawing Tool

A variety of drawing tools are available in CLIP STUDIO PAINT. Choose different drawing tools to suit your style and purpose.

1 Here you will use the [Pencil] tool to draw your draft. Adjust the brush size to make this tool easy to use.

Select the [Pencil] tool from the [Tool] palette, and then select [Mechanical pencil] or [Darker pencil] from the [Sub tool] palette.

Note: Depending on the version you are using, one of the sub tools will be stored in the [Sub tool] palette.

2 Adjust the brush size of the [Pencil] tool.

Adjust the brush size of the [Pencil] tool either by moving the [Brush Size] slider on the [Tool Property] palette or by selecting a size on the [Brush size] palette.

[Memo]

If these palettes are not displayed, you can display them using the [Window] menu.

■ Using the drawing tools (Tablet)

When using a tablet, the display method of the screen for setting up tools etc. will differ. This part will explain the steps of selecting the [Pencil] tool and adjusting its settings.

1 Tap the [Pencil] tool in the [Tool] palette.

2 Tap the [Sub Tool] palette icon. When the [Sub Tool] palette is displayed, select [Mechanical pencil] or [Darker pencil].

3 Tap the icon of the [Brush Size] palette. When the [Brush Size] palette is displayed, select a brush size.

The selected brush size will be applied to the sub tool.

4 Tap the icon of the [Tool Property] palette. When the [Tool Property] palette is displayed, adjust the tool settings.

With the [Pencil] tool, you can adjust settings such as [Brush density] and [Stabilization].

Other tools can be selected and adjusted in the same way.

[Memo]

· The contents of the [Sub Tool] palette changes according to the tool selected from the [Tool] palette.

· The contents of the [Tool Property] palette changes according to the tool selected from the [Sub Tool] palette.

Drawing a Draft

1 Select [Window] menu → [Color Set] to show the [Color Set] palette.

2 Set the line color to be used in the draft. Click light blue in the [Color Set] palette to select it as a color.

We have chosen a color that is easy to distinguish from black as black will be used to ink the illustration later.

3 Draw a rough overall layout for the illustration.

Correcting the Lines

1 To erase lines you have drawn, use the [Eraser] tool.

Select the [Eraser] tool from the [Tool] palette and select "Hard" from the [Sub tool] palette.

2 Adjust the size of the [Eraser] tool.

Adjust the brush size of the [Eraser] tool either by moving the [Brush Size] slider on the [Tool Property] palette or by selecting a size on the [Brush size] palette. Setting a larger size allows you to erase a larger area at once, while setting a smaller size allows you to correct fine details.

3 Move the eraser along the line to be erased.

Tips: Correcting a Line Using [Undo]

You can undo your last action while drawing by using [Undo] on the [Toolbar]. Use [Undo] to completely redraw a line or the [Eraser] tool to correct part of a line or an area containing multiple lines.

When using a touch-capable device, you can undo operations by tapping the canvas with two fingers.

Finishing the Draft

Start with a rough drawing and then add the fine details. Draw and erase gradually until your draft is finished.

Your draft is now complete.

[Memo]

You can adjust the scale and position of the canvas when drawing the fine details. For details on the display operations of the canvas, see "Before Drawing a Work in CLIP STUDIO PAINT" → "Basic Canvas Operations and Shortcuts".
