Hi whoever reading this, in this tutorial I'll explain all properties of the new tool from CSP's new update, LIQUIFY.

Introduction to Liquify

Liquify tool can be accessed in Clip Studio Paint version 1.11.6 or later, it can be found together with the BLEND feature (default shortcut > J).

There are 7 modes of Liquify:

1. Push

2. Expand

3. Pinch

4. Push Left

5. Push Right

6. Twirl Clockwise

7. Twirl Anti-Clockwise

Most settings are the same with normal brushes, except for these 3 settings featured, which will highly affect the final product:

1. Strength

2. Hardness

3. Only refer to editing area

I'll first explain the modes first, and then the settings. All pictures in the mode explanations will have the strength setting halved while the rest maxed out.

1. PUSH

Push is one of the most basic mode of Liquify. You basically drag the object around, depending on the dragging direction, it'll get distorted in the corresponding direction.

This mode is usually for stretching objects or adjusting small details without affecting its quality.

2. EXPAND

Expand is another mode that is quite simple. It inflates/increases the size of wherever area the brush stays. The longer the stay, the larger it inflates. From the stay-in-place line, the area stops inflating once there is only 1 color left in the brush area in a circle figure.

Its uses are mostly involved with increasing size of a too-small part, increasing line thickness, distorting textures, or making H U G E honkers--//slapped

3. PINCH

The opposite of Expand mode. Instead of inflating the area, it deflates/shrinks the brush area towards the center of the brush. Notice that the stay-in-place line has a houtglass figure at the affected area.

Pinch mode can be used for making a line or a body thinner, and decresing a too-large area's size.

4. PUSH LEFT

This mode is quite complex compared to the above modes. depending on the stroke's direction, the object would always be pushed to the left of the direction. That's why there's no effect on the left line below.

When stretching/distorting a very big shape with the above modes, the result may appear sloppy, out of shape, or affect the surrounding shapes you're not editing. This mode can solve these problems.

5. PUSH RIGHT

Exactly the same with Push left mode, but it instead pushes to the right.

If some stroke isn't comfortable for you to draw with the Push left mode, you can switch to this mode, the only difference is that you'll draw the opposite way.

6. TWIRL CLOCKWISE

A fancy-ish Liquify mode. It rotates the area clockwise, leaving curls if you slightly moves the brush. The left stroke is drawn slower than usual to show the effect. I also made a small circular motion instead of staying in place to make the curl easier to look.

Many unique patterns can be obtained from this tool, for example, marble and curls.

7. TWIRL ANTI-CLOCKWISE

A mode identical to the previous Twirl, but it instead rotates anti-clockwise.

Everything's the same, it's just that the result would be a reflected version of the clockwise twirl.

STRENGTH

Actually this setting appears in most of the CSP blending tools. This setting allows you to adjust how much stretch you wanted per stroke.

HARDNESS

Hardness setting let you adjust how much area to stretch along the stroke. Low hardness means softer edge between the stretched and the unstretched area.

ONLY REFER TO EDITING AREA

This setting is a little bit confusing. Once turned on, like the name said, all area away from the brush area won't appear during the liquifying process.

In case you don't understand what I mean, from the line with this setting turned off, it pulled in the texture outside of its brush area. In the picture below, I labeled all sources of where are those weird shapes from:

Note: The steps also decides if the shape would appear. Here's my order: ON twirl>OFF twirl>ON expand>OFF expand>ON pinch>OFF pinch

SUMMARY

Liquify is a life saver for us artists, it can distorts an area without damaging the quality, and can create fancy stuffs too. I also made a smol table summarizing the modes:

That's all I can offer you about the CSP's new update, LIQUIFY, I hope this will help you understand more in this feature, enjoy painting!!
