Introduction
!Hello! This time I am going to explain how to draw water? and I will share with you everything I use to draw the water including the brushes.
As we know, water in real life has no color but for illustration the cold colors of the color wheel are usually used, such as blue, turquoise and purple.
And for more fantasy purposes you can use many more colors especially when ambient light is reflected in the scene you are working on.
So, let's start with the first example, which would be waves.
Example 1 "Sea waves"
Step 1: Base Color and Shape
The first thing you have to do is create a folder and then you start adding the layers you want.
Ok, now we have to draw the shape, in this case I draw the shapes of the sea waves including those random drops that the sea always leaves behind when a wave forms.
Brush I use:
► PEN G
The color I chose as a base is a dark blue.
Step 2: Shadows
Create a new layer and this time use the clipping mask option so you don't have a problem and you don't get out of the shape we already created from the waves.
You find it on the upper right side, where the layer options are. The moment you activate it a red line will appear on the side.
Now with a darker color, always in the shade of blue, create the shadow in the water.
Next duplicate the previous layer, you might ask how do you duplicate the layer?
Just put yourself in the layer below
RIGHT CLICK - DUPLICATE LAYER
or you can also use the following commands:
CONTROL + C to copy
CONTROL + V to paste the layer.
The difference between this layer and the previous one is that in this layer we will put a BLENDING MODE.
But what are blending modes? In summary for me they are the effects that give that extra touch to your illustrations and are used to brighten the illustrations. There are several and I recommend that you experiment with them and find your favorite.
Now the BLENDING MODES are located on the top right. In the image I indicate it with the box and the yellow arrow.
You will get a list of different blend modes, I chose COLOR DODGE and lowered the opacity of the layer since it was very light.
What is opacity? Where do I find it?
Opacity is basically the transparency of a layer. You can change the opacity % between 1% - 100%
The opacity of a layer determines to what degree you can see the layers below it.
And you find it right next to the fusion modes in the image I indicate it as the arrow and red box.
And so I stay
Step 3: Light
Create a new layer and add light with white color on top of the waves.
Brushes I use:
►BRUSH G
► wave (element wave)
Use this last one in its great majority, it is a brush that you download in CLIP STUDIO ASSETS. It is a pack and contains several brushes.
The pack costs 500 CLIPPY but there are many other brushes that serve the same purpose and are COMPLETELY FREE, you just have to take your time to find them. I highly recommend it.
And this is the result
Step 4: Shine behind the object
As I mentioned at the beginning, what we have done so far has to be in a single folder.
Now we will create a layer that will be behind our folder. That is to say that the color that we put next will be at the bottom of our illustration.
In the picture I show you. The red arrow indicates the folder that we created in step 1. If I click on it, it will show me all the layers that we created previously, but so that you understand me, the folder is not displayed right now.
And below I have three layers that are not inside the folder and in the illustration it means that it is at the bottom of everything else. It is indicated with the yellow arrow.
The color I chose at the beginning was white with the blending mode ADD GLOW / ADD GLOW
Brush I use:
► PEN G
but I lowered the opacity of that layer to 18% because it looked too light.
Next, create another layer and use the Blend Mode (COLOR DODGE) and use a saturated light blue color.
Then with the brush paint the entire outline of the wave (remember that these two layers are located behind our folder)
Brush I use:
► SOFT WATERCOLOR
For a better effect use the
⇢ GAUSSIAN BLUR
Where do you find the Gaussian Blur?
FILTER - BLUR - GAUSSIAN BLUR
Then lower the opacity to 49%
Step 5: Glitter on the bottom
Now we are going to create another layer and add glow to the background of our waves with the color white and the Blend Mode (ADD GLOW / ADD GLOW)
Brush I use:
►Bbrush G
Also use the ⇢ GAUSSIAN BLUR
Step 6: Gradient
Create a new layer and select the GRADIENT tool located on the left of your screen.
Select the default gradient DAYTIME SKY
Now hover over DAYTIME SKY AND click
A window will appear to EDIT THE GRADE.
Select the SPECIFY COLOR option
Another window will appear where you can choose another color.
Choose the purple color and click Ok
Stand in the middle of the illustration and click
a line will start to come out then draw it from top to bottom
This is the result
This time lower the opacity to 21%
Step 7: Strokes and Texture
Create a new layer and use white color and Blend Mode (ADD BRIGHTNESS)
Now I will start to trace the lines of the waves using the CLIP STUDIO ASSETS brush pack
Brush I use:
► wave (element wave)
Add more shine even to the drops and in the corner of the illustration
keep adding more strokes
Step 8: Final Details
It's time to finish this water illustration and for that I will detail the waves more by adding more paths and glitter.
I continued using the brush from CLIP STUDIO ASSETS ► wave (element wave) and the decoration tool.
I use BRIGHT C but there are more brightness options like:
GLOSS TO
BRIGHT B
Remember that you can always improve your illustration using the color correction option.
Where do you find it?
EDIT - TONE CORRECTION
A list will appear, in this case I used:
curve tone
Brightness and Contrast
Well we are done this is the final result
Example 2: "Fishbowl"
Step 1: Base Color and Shape
So now I will show you another example that I drew following the same technique and the same steps.
1. Use the FIGURE tool and use the circle shape.
Step 2: Shadows
2. Add the shadows with a darker tone always in the shade of blue. Remember to use the clipping mask from this layer.
Duplicate the layer and use the Blending Mode (COLOR DODGE)
Step 3: Light
3. Add light
Create a new layer, and use a brush that will help you to give that water effect in my case, as I had already mentioned, I used the brush from CLIP STUDIO ASSETS ►Wave (element wave)
Trace the light on the top of the circle and on the sides.
Step 4: Shine behind the object
4. Light behind the object
Create two new layers behind the folder you have been working on
and add light with the ADD BRIGHTNESS/COLOR DODGE blend mode.
I use the soft brush and blur it with the GAUSSIAN BLUR effect and lower the opacity-
And on the other layer add the light blue color, always with the soft brush then use the gaussian blur. Also lower the opacity.
Step 5: Glitter on the bottom
5. Light in the background
Create a new layer and add light on the bottom of the circle I use the ►SOFT BRUSH with the Blending Mode ADD GLOW and the color is light turquoise. Later I blur it with the GAUSSIAN BLUR.
Step 6: Gradient
6. Gradient.
Now I use the gradient tool and stroke it in the center from top to bottom with a purple to turquoise gradient. Just like in the wave example.
Now lower the opacity to 46%
Step 7: Strokes and Texture
7. Strokes and texture
With the CLIP STUDIO ASSETS brush I continue to draw more lines simulating water and add more shine around the circle.
Step 8: Final Details
7. Last details
Ok now I draw two fish and add many more details
now I add bubbles and use the ones that CLIP STUDIO PAINT gives you that are on the left side of your screen, the decoration tool with the name SOAP BUBBLES.
Add a lot more details and finally use tone correction to bring more life to the colors you had chosen.
In the image I show you how you find it and specifically use the CURVE TONE and POSTERIZATION
I also used the Noise effect because this effect helps a lot to give our illustrations a very special touch. If you compare it, you will see that the strokes are clearer.
You can find this effect in FILTERS-NOISE-MORE NOISE
Here I show you a comparison. The illustration above does not have PITCH CORRECTION or the NOISE effect and the one below does.
I highly recommend that you use both.
Here is the end result.
Example 3: "Cat in the bathtub"
Step 1: Base Color and Shape
Let's repeat the same steps.
1. Create a new folder and in it a new layer.
Use the select layer option where I have my LINEART to fill the bathtub with color. With the FILL tool I then started erasing to create the shape I wanted.
Step 2: Shadows
2. Create a new layer and activate the clipping layer from now on.
Now draw the shadows with a darker color always in the shade of blue. And go making the shape with the eraser. Always with the ►BRUSH G.
Lower the opacity to 44%
Duplicate the layer and activate the blending mode (ADD BRIGHTNESS)
Lower the opacity to 23%
Step 3: Light
Create a new layer and use the blending mode (ADD GLOW)
Use one of the brushes from the CLIP STUDIO ASSETS PACK around the bathtub
►Wave brush (element wave)
Lower the opacity to 18%
Step 4: Shine behind the object
Create a new layer behind the folder we had been working on.
This time don't use any blend mode and paint with the AIRBRUSH and a light blue color around the bathtub.
now lower the opacity to 26%
Step 5: Glitter on the sides
now in a new layer I will start to give more light around the bathtub with one of the brushes from the CLIP STUDIO ASSETS PACK called
►Wave (element wave)
Lower the opacity to 18%
Here is a little change, contrary to the other two examples at this point I felt it necessary to add one more layer of shadows so I used the ►SOFT WATERCOLOR BRUSH and a shade of dark blue.
And at the end I blur it with the GAUSSIAN BLUR
I had to lower the opacity to 18%
Now, create a new layer with the blending mode (ADD BRIGHTNESS)
you can say that I started to add more brightness to the background with the ►SOFT WATERCOLOR BRUSH.
and lower the opacity to 28%
Step 6: Gradient
Create a new layer and use the gradient tool as explained above.
The gradient I chose is from purple to turquoise.
Lower the opacity to 28%
Step 7: Strokes and Texture
In a new layer I started to draw the strokes with the ►WAVE BRUSH (ELEMENT WAVE).
Activate the blending mode (ADD BRIGHTNESS) and lower the opacity to 36%
Now add a new layer behind the folder and fill it with a black color.
Add texture with a brush that defaults to CLIP and is called
► FABRIC X1
and lower the opacity to 23%
Step 8: Final Details
In a new layer add the bubbles with a brush that already has a clip, it is the one I used previously ►SOAP BUBBLES and this time I also downloaded a brush in CLIP STUDIO ASSETS, guess what? it is totally FREE. Here I leave the capture.
As last details add more light in the center with the ► SOFT WATERCOLOR BRUSH
I added another layer and traced some lines on the water with one of the brushes from the CLIP STUDIO ASSETS PACK ►Wave (element wave)
Lower the opacity to 56%
Remember to use tone correction to give your illustrations a cooler touch. This time use the curve tone.
And well this is the end result.
Here I leave the history of colors that I used in case it helps you :D
!Thank you very much! for coming this far and I hope you have enjoyed and learned a lot on this occasion. See you in another CLIP STUDIO TIP.
