In this video I will show you how to use the selection tool and how to make flat colors in different ways, I will also show you some tricks to speed up your work. 💖😁👍GOOD VISION!😘👍💖😁

Intro

As you can see at the top left in the fourth pane is the SELECTION tool. By pressing the tool all the various selections you can choose will open to the right, now I will show you how to use them in different ways to make flat colors or to distort and transform your drawing.

The various selection tools

General Properties

Selecting an area in our drawing allows us to act only with what is inside it at that specific level.

Rectangle

With the Rectangle tool we can select a rectangular area of various sizes. For example, this can be useful for coloring a background.

Polyline

For more angular or perspective shapes, I'm better off using the Polyline selection. Just click on specific points to add a vertex and trace the selection as we like until the polygon is closed. Using a greater number of points can also be useful for soft figures, but is not always advisable.

Ellipse

The Ellipse Selection tool selects a rounded area, useful for drawing shadows of spherical objects or points of light.

Lasso

With the Lasso selection tool we can select an area of the freehand drawing.

Selection Pen

The Selection Pen tool allows you to draw the area to be selected.

Erase Selection

While with the Erase Selection we can delete the areas that we do not wish to select.

Auto Select

On non-polygonal shapes such as a sphere, the Auto Select tool is very useful, as it automatically selects an area of a certain color.

One of the very important conditions for using this tool is that the lines are well closed around the entire contour of the chosen area, otherwise it could select unwanted areas.

Other Useful Tools

When you select an area, you will notice that a small window will open at the bottom with various functions.

For example: By clicking this icon, you will delete everything within your selected area.

By clicking this you can delete everything outside your selection.

By clicking this one you can resize, collapse and rotate the drawing.

By clicking the right mouse button a further window will open with other very useful distortion functions.

Texture

Through this icon, you can also insert a texture of your choice.

You can also choosing the type by clicking on the type button.

Tips and Tricks

Easy Copy

If you select a drawing and move it, you will just move it.

But if you do this while holding down the ALT key, Clip Studio will create an exact copy of your drawing within the selection! This can be useful for creating repeating objects such as street lamps, candles etc…

Auto Fill and Easy Switch

It is important to remember not to confuse the levels.

If your drawing is in only one layer, the Polyline tool will be more appropriate depending on the case.

In any case, we can automatically fill the selected area with the desired color by pressing ALT+BACKSPACE…

…or, by pressing B, we will quickly switch to the brush tool to fill manually.

Easy Correction

The Lasso Selection tool can also be useful for making slight corrections.

Creativity and Combination

You will surely have noticed that if you try to select more than one area, the previous one will vanish.

Actually, each selection tool can be toggled or added as desired while keeping the selection active! Simply by holding down the SHIFT key you can add several selected areas.

Instead, by holding down the ALT key you can delete the areas that you do not want to be selected.

All of this makes it absolutely important to master selection tools, as they can help you unleash your creativity in ways you've never seen before! Start practicing with simple shapes!

Let's Draw and Color!

Well! The time has come to give some examples of how some of the tools we have just seen can help us to improve our drawings and take half the time to create them!

Move and Resize

Unlike traditional drawing, digital drawing gives us the advantage of not having to delete an entire draft when we realize there is a mistake. In fact, we just need to apply the selection tools to reshape our drawings to our liking.

Remember that, like the brush, other tools will only act on the selected area. It is therefore very useful to use the Liquefy tool to quickly fix some parts of the drawing.

Why draw something multiple times when we can duplicate and resize it to our liking?

Mastering Auto Select

Auto Select is a tool that, if used correctly, can save us a lot of time. Unfortunately, very often you may come across drawings whose edge is not perfectly closed.

In some cases, we could get away with using the Polyline tool and a sufficiently high number of points...

...other times, however, implementing this method could take a long time and not give the desired results.

Fortunately, with some care, we will still be able to use our beloved Auto Select. In fact, it will be enough to color the edges of the area we are interested in filling with the desired color. By doing this, we will be sure that Auto Select will act as it should.

Once this is done, click at the top left on "Select" and then on "Expand selected area".

We do this to slightly expand this selection in order to ensure that the automatic selection includes part of the drawn edges so as to avoid leaving imperfections.

After that, press ALT+BACKSPACE and you're done!

In a short time you will have your flat color drawing ready, and you can immediately move on to the phase of adding lights, shadows and various effects!😊
