How to Draw Manga style eyes in Monochrome (Tablet Version)
INTRODUCTION
eyes are an important point in expression, from the eyes we can see a person’s character and feelings, that’s why here i will not only show you how to draw eyes but also i will show you how to give expression to a character through the eyes.
EYES
The Shapes
In manga we can see many eyes shape, each shape of eye will represent your character, look at the image above, we can see “A” and “B” have different shapes, without explanation and just by looking the image we know both characters have different traits.
as i said there are various shapes in manga but even so there are common shapes that we can see in manga, check the image below:
beside the common eyes shape that i’ve shown above, there are still eye shapes that you have to learn and you shouldn’t miss, see the image below
In eye “A” the corner is lower than the inner corner of the eye, this makes the character look innocent, calm, relaxed, etc. while in eye “B”, of course the opposite of downturned eye, where the outer corner of the eye is higher than the inner corner, makes the character look strong ,brave, etc. here we know, just by moving the outer corner of the eyes up or down can change the traits of the character. that’s why you should think about what kinds of eyes are suitable for your manga character.

Draw The eye
There are many things that you should consider when drawing eyes in manga, including the size of the eyeball, even the eyeballs can show traits of your character, choose the right eyeball size that suits your manga character, you can see the image below
each size can show different traits, small eyes are suitable for your villain characters or masculine characters , and the bigger eyeballs are suitable for innocent characters, for kids or feminine characters.

Eye Colors
have you ever wondered about the eye color of manga characters? and you must know that colors have many shades and manga is draw in monochrome, even in black and white each character in manga can have a different color, and this section will show you how to express the eye color for your manga character.
Black
for black you can follow the video below, please remember in monochrome you can’t use gradient but don’t worry we can use manga gradient instead.
Blue, Gren ,etc
For colored eyes, use two layer gradient, and this method can also used for brown eyes, check the video below.

EXPRESSION
Look the image above how expression can deformed the eyes. in example “B”, the character is shocked and you can see the eyeballs change shape, the pupils are shrink and the white area of the eyes is bigger and the upper eyelid is go higher and lower eyelid go lower. and this can happen when he character is angry.
And look the image below how the eye change from “A” to “B”, in eye “B” the upper eyelids downcast when crying, make the eyeball covered by the upper eyelids and the lower eyelid slightly higher and touch the eyeball.
what about if our character feels emptiness. we can just simply remove the eyeball and light reflection. like the image below
Even with eyes closed, we can bring expression to the character, such as anggry , happy, sad, etc. look the image below
