How to draw flowers
There is nothing more beautiful than flowers. They can make your artwork lively, create mood and tell hidden stories.
I will show you how I draw , color and create bouquets.
How to draw these kind of flowers?
You should analyse how flowers look. How petals twist and cover one another. How they look in different angles.
Because flowers are not flat, to give them life we draw them in perspective and all king of angles. It gives natural feeling of flowers, because not all flowers look straight.
Some of them have soft stem, because of that they can look softer. When you hold them, they can bend and then their flower head can look down like tulips.
Flowers who have strong stem will always look up to the sun, like roses.
Some of the flowers can have a little bending near the flower head.
Here are some examples how you can draw flowers in different angles and positions.
As you can see some of them looks similar.
If you can draw daises, you can also draw lilies since they look kind of similar. It is same with tulips and roses.
When you simplify them, they look even more similar.
You can see difference in petal size, form, how they twist, bend. Do they have a lot of petals or have only one.
So, when you want to draw a flower, you should think about petal size, form. In which direction your flower will look, because of direction your flower petals will look different.
How to draw a flower?
Star with a sketch.
Then draw over it your flower petals in desired form and size.
When you like you lineart, you can add base colors.
Then, I use the same color for base, clip new layer above and set it to multiply. Use soft air brush to add some soft shade.
Then create new layer and clip it above your soft shadow, set it to multiply again and with pen tool draw deeper shadows.
After that you can create another layer, clip it and take brighter or lighter color than your base color to add some glow.
You can leave it with black lines, but I like to color them, because it makes flowers look softer. So, create new layer above your lineart and color your lines with darker color than your flowers darkest shadow.
Don't be afraid to use references, if you need!
Sometimes flower color can create different mood or tell something about your character.
White flower can make your character innocent or pure. He likes blue flowers? Maybe he is cold person and don't like to show emotions.
Your character got red roses? That person is loved.
Because of this, when you draw flowers it is very important to know what colors you will use and what you want to tell with flower color. Also flower species are important!
