Create Your Avatar and Avatar Wardrobe!
Hi, I am BebeKiki. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create your own Avatar for your game, social media and/or community in a super easy way.
In Clip Studio Paint, there are 2 ways to draw your illustration, by free hand or using Figure Tools. In this tutorial, I will show you how to use Figure Tool to create an avatar. This time, I am using CSP Tablet Version on my tablet with pen.
Draw the head
Open CSP and create a new file (500 x 500 px). Create a new vector layer. Click the Figure Tool and select the Ellipse sub-tool. Set the brush size 4 px, black color. Click the Aspect type checkbox to draw a circle. Drag on the top left hand corner, move diagonally toward the bottom right corner to draw a large circle. This will form the head of the avatar.
Draw hair lines using Curve Sub-tool, Straight Line Sub-Tool and Continuous Sub-Tool.
Click Correct Line Tool, select Split Line Sub-tool to split the circle.
Change to the Move Control Point Sub-tool and modify the lines to form the hair.
Usually there are many control points on the circle. Too many control points might increase the difficulties during shape modification. Use Delete Control Point Sub-tools to delete unnecessary control points.
Click Eraser Tool and select Vector Sub-tool to delete unnecessary lines. Click the line that you want to delete and CSP will delete the line up to the line intersections.
You may also add control points to lines using the Add Control Point Sub-tool whenever you think necessary.
Use Switch Corner Sub-tool to change the curve's turning direction.
Fine-tune the illustration using the sub-tools under the Correct Line Tool (Move, Add, Delete control points and Switch Corner)
Draw the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth
Click Ruler Tool and select Symmetrical Ruler Sub-tool. Set Number of Lines to 2 and check the Line Symmetry checkbox. Draw a vertical Symmetrical Ruler, separating the left and the right face.
On the vector layer with the vertical Symmetrical Ruler, draw the eye, eyelash and eyebrow on one face and the same items will appears on the other face like a mirror image. Uncheck the Aspect Type checkbox of the Ellipse Sub-tool to draw the eye.
Create a new Raster layer under the vector layer with the eye outline, click the Fill Tool and select Refer Other Layers Sub-tool to paint the eyes with black color.
On the same raster layer, draw a white small circle using the Ellipse Sub-tool to form the pupil. Select grey color with 45% capacity, draw a circle on the lower part of the eyes.
Use Eraser Tool, Hard Sub-Tool to remove the unnecessary colors on the raster layer.
Use the Ellipse Sub-tool to draw 2 small white circles with opacity 100% on each eye to form the reflection.
Draw the eyelash and eyebrow on the vector layer with the Symmetrical Ruler.
Draw the nose and the mouth on a new vector layer without the Symmetrical Ruler using the Curve Sub-tool and the Ellipse Sub-tool under the Figure Tool.
Paint the Face and the Hair
Create a new raster layer and place it immediately below the vector layer containing the eye illustration. Click the Fill Tool and select Refer Other Layers Sub-tool to paint the hair and the face.
Create Folders to group layers. Use Select/Rotate Tool on layer level, you can manipulate all illustrations on that layer.
Use Select/Rotate Tool on folder level, you can manipulate all illustrations on all layers under that folder.
When the avatar illustration is ready, export it as JPEG or PNG format. You might then upload the exported image to your game, social media and/or community.
Alternatively you can upload a tracing photo and use the techniques mentioned above to draw your illustration by tracing the features of your photo.
Bonus Tips : Build up your Avatar Wardrobe using the same technique stated above. Put each style or accessories under a properly named folder. You can then change the clothes, eyewear, hair accessories and gesture of your avatar whenever you want. Just click the eye checkbox next to the folder to make the folder visible or invisible.
