Be Crazy on your Pop-Art Artwork
Hi, It's Awan again. ^.^
Introduction
Wanna play crazy now? let's improve your pop-art style!
In this tutorial you gonna learn more about Clip Studio Material and use them wisely. Manga-Anime materials are perfect in Clip Studio. I am personal use them for my pop-art artwork. I made this complex artwork using original Clip Studio Material. Clip Studio made a hundred materials so, there are a thousand possibilities to create a new effect.
The pugs are popular and mass culture object nowadays so, I use the cute pug for the main object.
Pop-Art is about the mass culture/popular things in our times, so you can use almost everything as your objects. the style of pop-art is dominant in comic art style. Actually, you can use almost every art style in making pop-art.
Pop-art is close to the advertising objects. The main key is the colorful colors, mostly complementary colors.
In this tutorial, of course, I use complementary colors. They are red and green colors. I also separate the tutorial into 2 sections. The first sections are talking about how I made the main object and the second sections are how I made the background.
Well, let's start the war! ^.^
STEPS OF MAKING MAIN OBJECTS
1. How Sketch Work
Don't leave (sketch) at first, particularly if you painting a very complex object on your canvas, sketch always help you to build a whole atmosphere on your painting.
Honestly, I am not planing anything at the first making these objects. I just, let my mind finding the popular objects in nowadays. I found the pug as the character, some decorative fire burn, bones as what pub love. the crown as the imaginary of king/champion and falling meteors as the imaginary of strong pug.
Try this idea if you want to have fun with your Pop-art artwork. ^.^
well, go to the next step.
2. Inking Like Pro
As a comic creator, I love to play inking in my artwork. You act like a pro and show your own inking character to the world. you can use this step:
1. (Layer-> New Layer) or
2. (press Ctrl+Shift+N) to create a new layer.
the layer will automatically on the upside. In this tutorial, I named the inking layer with (LINE) layer.
I use (mapping pen brush) to make a low/high-pressure inking line.
Go to make clean line cause this line will be mainline before the coloring step.
If your inking is done, you can turn off the sketch layer and save the (SKETCH) layer or delete the (SKETCH) layer. I prefer to save it. Next...
3. Draw the Shape of Color
before we going to color the objects, don't forget to create a new layer again and put the new layer under the (LINE) layer that we've created before. I named the layer with (SHAPE OF COLOR) layer. If you want to know about the layer structures, I've attached them at point 5: LAYER PREVIEW.
I personally love to fill the main objects with the shape of the color line. it's saving my time than coloring objects one by one. there are 2 pictures attached above. I'll explain to you what are they:
A.) the red color: is the first coloring step. I draw the shape of color first by following the line that I want to fill with color. the white part is the transparent part. I use the (mapping pen brush) to create this. Don't forget to [lock transparent pixel] then, your coloring layer locked. You can freely change the color inside the layer.
B.) The full color: is the next coloring step of the previous one. in this part, I decide the color of each main object. If you curious how I made gradient fire burn, I've explained it at the next step. Yosh!!! ^.^
this is how I made the gradient color fire burn.
use the selection tool, and select the fire color. after you selected the fire colors part now use the (Airbrush-soft) to make a soft brush gradient. I just following the pallet color and brush the selection part.
I attached the pallet above if you want to try the same color.
4. Having Fun with the Text
I want to share how I made a background using text.
first, turn off all the layers except the Text layer you've made before.
use the following steps to make the same result.
open you're (Text) tool ->Write the text-> setting the FONT, FONT size, style, etc -> make the text composition on your artwork.
now, let's compositing more of text. In this tutorial, I copy the text I've been created before. and compositing just like the picture below. Then, I merge the 3 text layer into one text layer.
Here is the result. I turned on all layer again except SKETCH layer for sure and the result is like the second picture above.
The next step is turning the text layer into the raster layer. The purpose is to fully editable with the brush support because the text layer only supports fully editable in the (Text) mode, so we have to change the format first. the steps as follows:
right-click on your Text layer -> convert layer(H)...-> change the Type(K) into Raster layer -> OK
Now, you can erase, transform, brushing, at the layer because the layer already turning to raster layer.
5. Layer Preview
Here are the total layers we've got until these steps, we have 4 layers.
-LINE layer: our inking layer
-SHAPE OF COLOR layer: our colorful layer //[lock transparent pixel]
-SKETCH layer: our sketch layer (turned off)
-ON FIRE layer: our text layer that has been turned into the raster layer. //[lock transparent pixel]
6. Playing Halftone
Halftone is a special effect. I love halftone to make cool objects volume on some of my paintings. The way to use it is so simple, just playing brush and take the whole part.
This step is an efficient way to make halftone:
1. use the selection tool to make a selection halftone part. You can make a little part or whole halftone part. I prefer to make the little part cause I can change the part later.
2. when your selection part ready, it'll appear little options box. choose (new tone) to enter the halftone menu. there is some setting that you can freely change. it includes the halftone number of screen frequency, density, type, angle, etc. Set them to get the setting you want then, click OK. You can change the setting layer on the Layer Property.
The halftone is ready to serve. It will automatically make a new layer. Go to the halftone layer and click on the Layer Property if you want to change the complex setting of a halftone.
In Layer Property, you can change the halftone color and the same option like halftone setting box before and now, you can freely play with your brush and erase to make the halftone part in your painting when you are in the halftone layer for sure. There are so many options of halftone type shape, choose what you love. I use "Lozenge" for this tutorial.
use the brush to make the halftone part of your painting. and use eraser// (shortcut C/ to change the brush be erase) to erase the unnecessary halftone part.
Here are the selected halftone areas.
from this step, you can add another halftone effect to create a new effect. of course with the new layer. the key is 1 layer for 1 type of halftone. you can merge the halftone if you want when your all halftone finish for sure.
7. Add Some Transform Words
Now, it's time to dress up the pug with some words on Pug t-shirt.
Use the {Text} tool to do this work. In this case, I write "PUG ON FIRE!!!". Change the font as you want, the size and color then, click OK. Text layer automatically put it'self on the top of layers structure.
The next step is to put the Text layer under LINE/INKING layer means that I want my LINE/INKING cover-up everything.
Change the layer color mode if you want. Every option gives a different effect on the layer. In this tutorial, I change the color mode into Hard Light. It gives transparent color and mixed out with under layers of the edited layer.
Play transforms to change the shape of your layer. You can follow these steps to enter the Transform mode:
Edit ->Transform ->Mesh Transform. the editable transform point will appear and ready to play with. Drag the points every corner as the shape you want.
You can change the Mesh Transform options with Tool Property [Move layer].
Here are the total layers. I separate the MAIN OBJECTS and BACKGROUND layer to easy edit in the future so, we have 6 layers on the MAIN OBJECT layer folder. The background layer is still one. We gonna add more. Let's go!!!
Make a layers folder to easily classify all the layers.
STEP OF MAKING BACKGROUND
1. Text as Background
At the first section, I made the text for the background. let's go back to the [On Fire] layer and play with the layer. Don't forget to hit [lock transparent pixel] if you do it yet. You have to turn off all the main object you've created before to easier making background.
Firstly, I want to make a gradient color on the text "ON-FIRE" background. so, I use (Airbrush-soft) and follow the pallet to get the effect.
emmm, I am not satisfied with the pallet, so I edit the color with these steps:
Edit -> Tonal Correction(D) ->Hue/Saturation -> Luminosity ->set the color options and press okay. well, you can even play with Brightness/Contrast, Posterization, Reverse Gradient, etc to get the color effect you want. Tonal Correction is the color changer field. you can change the color as you need. the various options will make your painting color richer.
The setting I've made give green iridescent color to blue color.
here's the result below:
If you want to make a scratch effect, do the effect with a brush or erase tool. I use a scratch brush to make this effect. you can see the differences between the two of them.
2. Monochromatic Material
Let's add another effect. Use the monochromatic material to make so many manga style effect.
Follow these steps to enter the monochromatic material:
WINDOW ->Material -> Material[Monochromatic Pattern] ->the Monochromatic Material toolbox will appear and show you various pattern options. Scroll down/up to find the pattern you love. if you already found one, press left click and drag to your workspace. In this tutorial, I use "25.0 line 100% circular S..." and get the pretty cool effect below:
this pattern will automatically create new layer itself after you drag it on your workspace. the {ON-FIRE} layer located under this Monochromatic layer. Mostly the {ON-FIRE} layer shut out by the monochromatic layer. that's okay, we just get a cool result. lol ^.^
3. Play Halftone for Backgorund
Wanna play halftone for the background? I this tutorial, I made another halftone with another type for the background. The steps are completely the same as the previous halftone steps before. I just change the halftone type and some setting to get a different effect. you can copy my setting if you like the result.
I also use a brush (Airbrush-soft) to spread the halftone to make these halftone background effect.
4. Decorate with CSP Manga Material
TIPS:
You can add more decorative in your artwork by using CSP templates. the feature let you to decorative your artwork with many choices. This Manga material contains the monochromatic, color pattern, 3D asset. etc. Be happy with this feature to shortcut your decoring times and play imagination.
if the Material[Manga material] is opened yet. you can open this feature following the steps below:
WINDOW ->Material -> Material[Manga Material] ->Play your imagination.
TOTAL LAYERS
After your background finished, go back to all your layers. Turn on all the layers.
Here are the final layers. There are total 12 layers. 6 layers for MAIN OBJECTS layers, and 6 layers for BACKGROUND. The compositions are attached above.
