Draw eyes from various angles and in various colors with Clip Studio Paint
Introduction
Are you having trouble drawing a character's eyes?
With CLIP STUDIO PAINT's functions,
you can easily draw any kind of eye.
We've also prepared a video, so if you understand Japanese, please take a look.
Draw eyes from various angles using 3D materials
CLIP STUDIO ASSETS has a variety of 3D materials.
Using 3D materials makes it easy to draw eyes from various angles.
You can use the object tool to move the material and change the direction of the eyes.
Using a 3D material as a rough guide will help avoid significant imbalances in the face.
I used this material to draw the eyes here.
How to use and operate 3D materials
Downloaded materials can be used from the material palette.
You can display the material palette from [Window] menu → [Materials] → [Materials[All Materials]].
Drag and drop the material you downloaded earlier from the material palette onto the canvas, and the material will be pasted onto the canvas.
3D materials are manipulated with the object tool (shortcut key: O).
We will only provide a simple explanation this time.
By dragging the camera icon on the far left, you can rotate the camera in any direction.
Rotate it to the angle you want to draw.
Once you've got the angle you want, set the 3D material layer as a sketch layer
and change the layer color to blue.
You'll use this material as a sketch to draw the eyes.
If you want to revert the layer attributes or display color, you can do so using the same steps.
You can display the Sub Tool Detail palette by clicking the wrench icon at the bottom right of the Tool Property palette.
Looking at the layer structure of the 3D material from the object list, we can see that it is divided into layers for the right eye's eyeliner, right eye's pupil, left eye's eyeliner, left eye's pupil.
You can hide unnecessary layers.
Use 3D primitive materials
If you're not confident in working with 3D materials, why not try starting with 3D primitives?
This is a self-made material. Just drag with the object tool
You can view the eyes from various angles.
You can also change to eyes you've drawn yourself, so please give it a try.
Gradient maps make it easy to paint any color eye
The line drawing of the eye is complete. Next, let's color the pupil.
There are many different eye colors, such as red, blue, and green, so many people may find it difficult to choose a color.
In such cases, it is a good idea to start with gray and then add color with a gradient map.
A gradient map is a function that allows you to replace and color the gradient color to match the shading of the layer.
(Reference: CLIP STUDIO PAINT Reference Guide)
For the purposes of this article, it is enough to understand that
"You can change the color of a picture painted in gray"
First, finish painting the eye color with gray.
This time I used a gray of this brightness. Please use this as a reference.
How to use gradient map layers
You can create a gradient map layer by selecting [Layer] menu → [New Tonal Correction Layer] → [Gradient Map].
When you create a gradient map layer,
the gradient map dialog will be displayed,
so you can choose your favorite color from your favorite set.
Then, it will change to the color you selected.
Here are the materials used this time.
CLIP STUDIO ASSETS has a lot of gradient map materials.
Please download various materials and find your favorite color.
Using a gradient map also makes it easy to change the colors later.
Click the icon to the left of the gradient map layer
The dialog box will appear again.
How to save time by using ingredients
As mentioned above, CLIP STUDIO ASSETS has a wide variety of materials.
Eyes are a particularly popular theme, so there are plenty of materials available.
Let's use these materials to quickly create high-quality eyes.
Paste this eye material and clip it to the eye base.
Adjust the size and position of the image material with the object tool to complete the eye.
If you want to adjust it with the distortion tool or write directly on the image material layer,
rasterize and process the image material layer.
If you want to change the color, you can quickly do so with a gradient map.
You can create the eyes of various characters with just one material!
I also created a variety of eyes using the following materials.
You can also use 3D materials as they are for the eye texture.
Hide the eyeliner with the object tool,
so that only the eye is visible.
Clip it to the base layer and move it with the object tool,
and change the color with the gradient map to complete the effect.
3D materials can also be used like image materials.
You can also process them by rasterizing them.
