In this course, we will explain the animation production process in CLIP STUDIO PAINT based on the digital animation work method of Nippon Animation Co., Ltd.

*This article is in Japanese. Sites other than Japanese are machine translated.

[POINT]

In this course, the cel animation folder created in the cut folder is commonly called the "cel folder".

Please refer to the following when checking functions in the CLIP STUDIO PAINT official user guide.

The workflow differs depending on whether the original image is on paper or when the clip data is used as is.

I will explain two methods, so please refer to the necessary items.

<When importing scanned originals>

First, I will introduce how to proceed assuming that the original drawing is on paper.

[1] Load the original image into the "original image" folder (if the original image is on paper)

① On the [Layer] palette, select the "Original" folder.

(2) Open the location where the scanned original image data is saved (start Explorer for Windows, Finder for Mac, File App for iPad, etc. at the same time as CLIP STUDIO PAINT).

③ Drag and drop the scanned image data onto the "Original" folder in the [Layer] palette.

The scan data of the original image has been read into the "original image" folder.

  • Images can also be read from the menu bar [File] menu → [Import] → [Image].

[2] Creating movie paper

■ 1. Tools used to create video paper

Let's create a video sheet.

Use the [Command Bar] to create paper.

When you press the down arrow on the right side of "Creating video a cell folder", 9 types of commands used to create video paper are displayed. Let's choose and use properly according to the application.

■ 2. Add "b" cel (animation folder)

Create an animation folder for the "b" cel.

(1) Click "Create movie b-cell folder" on the command bar.

"b" cel folder and "1" are created in the [Layer] palette.

Add cells as necessary, such as "Create video c cell folder" and "Create video c cell folder".

■ 3. Deleting cells

If you make a mistake in creating a cel folder, be sure to delete the folder from "Delete layer" on the command bar.

Commands such as "create movie b cell folder" introduced above are auto actions that record multiple operations. Therefore, the folder cannot be deleted by simply going back one step with "Undo".

■ 4. Adding movie paper (animation cels)

Next, create a movie sheet. Now, "1" is created in "a" cell, but add 4 sheets of paper here to make a total of 5 sheets.

(1) On the [Layer] palette, select the "a" cel folder.

(Selected layers and folders are displayed in light gray.)

(2) With the "a" cell selected, click "Create New Video Paper" on the [Command Bar].

Press once to create a "2".

  • "Create new video paper" is an auto action for creating paper in a form that is not reflected on the timeline.

③ Press 3 times in succession to make 5 sheets of movie paper in "a" cell.

In the same way, add the movie paper for the "b" cell.

④ Select the "b" cell and click "Create new video paper" to make 3 video papers for the "b" cell.

This completes the creation of the movie paper.

When the paper is ready, use the [Timeline] palette in the next lesson "6. Creating a timeline (video)" to specify the 5 "a" cels on the reverse sheet.

<When using Clip data as is>

If you want to use clip data as it is for video work, start from this process.

[1] Organize the original drawings into a folder

Combine the "A", "B", and "C" cel folders (animation folders for each cel) into the "Rough genga" layer folder.

(1) On the [Layer] palette, select the "A_", "B", and "C" cells.

(2) Click “Store in original folder” on the [Command bar].

③ The animation folders of "A_rough", "B_rough", and "C_rough" cels are stored in the "Rough Genga" layer folder.

When starting the animation process, by putting them together in one layer folder, you can organize and use the [Layer] palette while the "original picture" folder is closed.

[2] Create a cell folder for videos

Just like the command used to create the layout cel folder (cel animation folder), use the cel folder creation command from the [Command bar] to create the cel folder for the video.

(1) Click "Create movie a cell folder" on the [Command bar].

The "a" cel folder has been created on the [Layer] palette.

(2) Create the “b” cell in the same way.

[3] Copy the timeline cel specification

① Click [Show timeline palette] on the [Command bar] to display the [Timeline] palette.

(2) On the [Timeline] palette, drag to select all the cel specifications for "A_rough".

(3) Right-click to display the menu and select [Copy].

(On an iPad, you can perform the same operation as right-clicking by long-pressing with your finger, or by clicking while holding down the "Control" key on the edge keyboard or your keyboard.)

(4) Select the "a" cell track on the [Timeline] palette.

⑤ Select the first frame.

(6) Right-click and select [Paste] from the menu.

The cell specification has been copied and pasted from the "A" cell to the "a" cell.

[4] Create corresponding cells

Here, use [Create all corresponding cels], which is a convenient function for creating paper.

(1) On the [Timeline] palette, make sure that the track for cel "a" is selected.

(2) Click [Create All Corresponding Cells] on the [Command Bar].

The original drawing paper (animation cel) corresponding to the number specified in the empty cel in the [Timeline] has been created at once.

You can also check the created original paper on the [Layer] palette.

[5] Create an in-between paper

From the [Timeline] palette, add the paper necessary for the inbetween.

(1) Select the frame where you want to add the in-between paper. (4 frames here)

② Press [New animation cel] from the bar at the top of the [Timeline].

(3) A paper named "1a" has been created in the selected frame.

④Similarly, create an in-between between "2" and "3".

⑤ Rename in numerical order with "Normalize in order of layers".

If you select [Animation] menu > [Edit track] > [Normalize by layer order] from the menu bar, the numbers are renamed in the order of the layers.

[POINT]

Registering [Normalize by layer order] in the command bar makes it easier to use. When registering [Normalize by layer order] in the command bar, the distribution material icon "52_layer-numbering" can be used.

  • Icon materials can be downloaded from "2. Create a work environment_Change settings (video version)".

⑥ The number on the timeline has been renamed.

⑦Similarly, cell B will also be specified on the timeline.

*Please note that this method of renaming does not support reverse sheets.

If you want to specify the cels on the reverse sheet, create the paper and then specify the cels by referring to "6. Timeline Creation (Video Edition)".

[6] Drawing preparation

① On the [Layer] palette, lower the opacity of the “Original” layer folder.

(2) Select the movie paper on the [Layer] palette, select the layer for drawing on the [Animation cels] palette, and prepare for drawing.

[POINT]

If you want to use the [Timeline] of the Clip data as is, you can skip the next lesson "6. Creating a timeline". Let's proceed to the process of "7. Video work > 2. Original image tracing".
