In this course, we will explain the animation production process at CLIP STUDIO PAINT based on the method of digital animation work of Nippon Animation Co., Ltd.

[1] Interface basics

Describes the on-screen interface.

The [Menu Bar] is displayed at the top.

The row of icons below it is called the [command bar]. In the previous lecture, I added the basic tools used for animation to the [Command Bar] and changed the settings.

The palette on the upper right is the [Layer] palette. Displays layers, layer folders, and animation folders.

Below the [Layer] palette is the [Animation cels] palette. The [Animation cels] palette will be used during drawing.

[2] Layer palette and animation cel palette

<Layer palette>

Let's look at the [Layer Palette] in the upper right of the screen. Some folders have already been created.

If you load "NA_Movie template_In-house 160dpi" when creating a new folder, create a new folder with information such as Japanese animation LO paper, frame size table, taps, and some drawing layers created. I can.

From the bottom, there are "paper", "template", "LOframe_160dpi", "original picture", "digital cut bag", and "a".

[POINT] Difference between [Animation folder] and [Layer folder]

Images stored in the [Animation folder] can be animated by specifying frames on the [Timeline] palette.

Images in the [Layer folder] cannot be animated.

"Template" is the original animation folder when creating paper. (It is not used directly for work, but let's leave it as it is.)

"LOframe_160dpi" is the image data of LOframe. It is hidden by default.

The "digital cut bag" is for filling in the cut bag table and composite voucher. Since it is an animation folder, it will not be displayed unless you hit the timesheet.

A palette color is specified for each and is color-coded, making it visually easy to understand.

“A” is an animation folder for layout. A layer folder called "1" is stored inside.

[POINT]

If you look closely at the "template" on the [Layer] palette, you can expand the "1" folder.

Expanding the "1" layer folder, the layers are stored as follows.

In this course, we basically do not recommend displaying the layer structure on the [Layer] palette.

The reason is explained in the next item of <Animation cel palette>.

Press the ▽ button on the left side of "1" to close the layer expansion.

<Animation cel palette>

Let's look at the [Animation cels] palette below.

When the "1" layer folder in "a" is selected on the [Layer] palette, the contents are displayed on the [Animation cels] palette.

At the bottom of the [Animation cels] palette, you can see which folder is currently displayed.

The reason why we recommend not expanding the layer structure on the [Layer] palette is that the layer structure of the folder selected on the [Layer] palette is displayed on the [Animation cels] palette.

<Breakdown of "1" layer folder>

Let's take a closer look at the layer structure of "a0001" displayed on the [Animation cels] palette.

The layers for drawing "Black", "Red", "Blue", "Green", "Shadow" and the image material layers of "tap" and "100frame" are stored from the top.

"Black" is a solid black line, "Red" is a red tress line, "Blue" is a blue tress line, "Green" is a green tress line, and "Shadow" is a shadow-colored backing / video number transfer. Use each.

For each layer, the expression color is set to gray and the color drawn in [Layer color] is managed.

Therefore, "Black" is black, "Red" is red, etc., it is not affected by the selected drawing color, and is drawn in the color set in [Layer Color].

[Layer color] is not set for only the "Shadow" layer, and the drawing color can be freely selected.

Click these 5 layers on the [Animation cels] palette to switch, and draw as if you were holding a pencil.

[POINT] Regarding "Blue" layer

Although the drawing color of each color layer is set to be compatible with paintman. The color of "Blue" may appear too dark and may be confused with the color of "Black" when drawing or printing.

When such a case occurs, it is recommended to reduce the opacity of the "Blue" layer to an opacity that is easy to draw or print.

  • Even if you adjust the opacity of the trace line of each color, if you check [Export for Paintman] of [Export animation cel] when exporting to finish when moving the video, the opacity is compulsorily displayed at 100% Will be converted to and exported. If you want to export with the set opacity, you need to uncheck [Print for Paintman].

[POINT] About vector layers

There are [Vector layer] and [Raster layer] in the layer.

The vector layer is a layer in which the line information remains even after drawing and you can re-edit the line. In the raster layer, the drawn line is saved as an image and the line cannot be edited again.

Which one to use depends on your preference, but in this lesson we recommend [Vector Layer] as the layer for drawing.

The reason is that if processing (line adjustment such as line width correction) is required in the subsequent process, the degree of freedom of line processing will increase if you create it with [Vector Layer].

Lines drawn with [Raster Layer] become rough when edited such as enlarging the image. In addition, since the line width correction cannot be performed with the vector correction function, the degree of freedom in line processing is reduced. However, many people find that [Raster Layer] is better for writing.

On the other hand, [Raster layer] is selected as the "shadow" layer for painting. This is because you cannot use the fill color for [Vector layer].

If you want to use the materials distributed in this course, please understand that point before using.

In the next lecture, we will explain about paper making.
