1. INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone! I am Daniel Puente and in this tutorial I would like to make this TIP of the month for making work uniforms for you. On this occasion, I wanted to show you how to make the uniform of a labor sector with a lot of action in its day to day, specifically the Special Operations Group of the Spanish national police, popularly known as G.E.O. They are the elite unit of the Spanish National Police Force specialized in high risk operations. What are they called in your countries? I would love for you to be encouraged to make the analog of your country.

How will we carry out our work? very easy! We must follow four preliminary steps:

We will start by taking references from the internet: knowing your uniform well, both the textile and the accessories and even the weapons will be of utmost importance to give realism to our illustration; Later, we will make a sketch choosing the posture or sex of the individual. Then, we will clean up the sketch and we will incorporate lights, shadows and color. And finally, the final presentation, with all the details to make it easy for you, you'll see!

Throughout this tutorial I will specify certain tips that can help you improve. And, if you also want to see other applications of the techniques that we are going to learn in this artistic exercise, you can also find them with other approaches in my previous “Concept Art- Design your beast”, which, I encourage you to visit, for sure you will love it!

2. LET'S LOOK FOR REFERENCES!

We want the finish to be as true to reality as possible. So, our first job is to document ourselves to find the most characteristic features.

In our case, in the GEO uniform, the first thing we can see is that the predominant color is black, except for the patch for the operations corps (yellow, gray and black) and the patch for the police corps (white) that they provide variety in their color range.

We will note what type of protections they carry, as well as where they are located and how it affects the anatomy when drawing our model. For example: as you will see, the face is hidden and protected with the balaclava and the helmet with a screen; For the protection of the body, we must look at the design of the bulletproof vest with horizontal velcro lines where small bags with ammunition, radio or shackles are placed. We will also pay attention to other details such as gloves with reinforcements on the knuckles, elbow pads and knee pads. All this, therefore, is characteristic of this uniform and we must take it into account when drawing it.

Now that we have documented ourselves and we have all this data, the work is well advanced. We can only prepare our canvas and start drawing.

Let's do it!

3. PROCESS

In this section we are going to learn with 9 steps how to draw a police uniform of the G.E.O, to facilitate your task, images of the process will be included as a guide, tips and tools will be specified.

3.1 Preparation

The first thing we have to do is open our CLIP STUDIO PAINT (CSP from now on) and open a new file to start drawing. In my case, I have opened a white A4 vertical document.

File> New> Horizontal A4> OK

Once we have the blank canvas, we are almost ready to start working.

We create a new layer by clicking on the “new layer” icon in the “Layer” panel, by default it is on the top right. In case CSP has automatically created the layer when opening the file, we don't need to create it ourselves.

3.2 Sketch

To start making our sketch, the first thing we must do is select the tool with which we want to draw, for example, the “nib”, with the stroke that we like the most, “G” in my case, and we adjust the size that we want of the brush (this can be found in the lower panels). We can also choose the color of our line in the lower color wheel, I usually like to sketch in blue because this avoids possible confusion of lines later.

Now that we have everything ready, it's time to start drawing by sketching our G.E.O. I have chosen a male model, how about feedback with the female version? I would love to see it!

Tip 1: This design that I propose to you has a lot of versatility both in terms of the model and gender or its somatotype.

3.3 Solid Base

Before starting line-art (go clean) we must create a solid background base. To do this, we create a new layer again and put it under the sketch (and the line-art, as we will see in section 3.4). We proceed, therefore, to color the base of a dark gray. To do this, we must first select the "magic wand" tool and click on the outside of the sketch layer, as I indicate in the photo, this allows us to delimit the area we want to paint.

Now, it is time to invert the selection by pressing the command: "cmd + shift + i" to select the silhouette of our figure.

Next, we are going to apply the color to the previously delimited area with the “paint pot” tool. It is, therefore, the moment to erase and correct the imperfections of the base itself so that it provides us with line-art.

Tip 2: Note: To change the color of the layers you just have to click on the gray box that I indicate in the image and choose the one you like the most. This comes in handy to organize your layers.

3.4 Line-Art

We have already finished with the first lines, the idea is defined, so our next step is to create another new layer (repeating the previous steps) to clean up our sketch. This step is called Line-Art. We use the "Rough Pencil" tool in black.

Tip 3: Remember to give the sketch layer little opacity, since it will help guide you without confusion.

As you can see in the video and in the images, I have taken advantage of the Line-Art to gradually add blacks to the darkest areas, since in section 3.6 we will focus on them.

Likelihood tip 4: We are going to make our uniform even more credible and realistic, for this, from the preliminary point of reference we will be able to choose some details such as patches or symbols that characterize our uniform. In this model, I have chosen the official patch of the G.E.O.

Once the characteristic object is selected, we import it into our illustration (File> Import image), then we scale it through the transformation and place it in the corresponding place. Afterwards, we will lower the opacity to facilitate its tracing (note that we will not use the image as such since it may be subject to copyright, if not we will take it as a reference by copying it).

3.5 Black and White

The time has come to address the textures, as I show you in the following images, we will start with the texture and the realism of the helmet screen, we must bear in mind that it is translucent so we will work with grays and some touches of white.

First, with the “nib - G” tool we make the solid marks with a gray (in my case # 8b8b8b), see image 1 and 2.

Secondly, we create a new layer located under the previous one with the previous strokes, we make a gradient with the same gray with the “airbrush” tool: images 3 and 4.

Lastly, with the “brush - mix watercolor” tool we combine the grays: image 5 and, we end up providing gloss or details such as scratches with white and using the “nib - G” tool.

We are now going to deal with the shadows, in this step, we are located in the Line-Art layer, for now, we only need the "brush - mix watercolor" tool and use it to blur the blacks that we previously gave in Line-Art.

Tip 5: If you see it necessary, you can add more darkness in other areas that perhaps we previously overlooked.

To facilitate the next step, which will be to add the lights, we will previously subtract luminosity from the solid base. For which, we implement the command: "cmd + U", I show it in the following image.

It's time to light up our G.E.O!

We create a new layer and place it on top of the Line-Art layer. Next, we select the tool "Brush - Watercolor with an unfocused edge", then we are going to add light grays (without reaching total whites until the end) to increase the light and extract volumes and, in turn, mix them with Darker blacks and grays using the "Brush - Watercolor Blend" tool. I leave you a photo as a guide:

3.6 Color

Just as I showed you in the tip of point 3.4 of Line-Art, at this moment, we are going to create the following realistic and characteristic detail of this uniform by following these three simple steps. As you will see, it is the identifying patch of the body to which our uniform belongs: POLICE.

Step 1: Our first color to use will be white together with the "Text" tool. Choose a typeface similar to that of our references, I have chosen a basic Sans Serif for its similarity: image 1

(Later we will adjust its shape even more to reality).

Step 2: Rasterize the layer created from the text using the right button on the layer, which is found in the layers panel. Subsequently, we will transform the rasterized layer with the transformation "in mesh" as you can see in image 2.

Step 3: we will adjust the text to the empty patch that we draw in the Line-Art: image 3.

The rest of the colors, even if they are few, will be done in a new layer in a superimpose blending mode. You can see it in the following image:

Note: Make sure the whites of the glass are above the color layer.

3.7 Shadow casting technique

Let us now turn to the shadow cast or reflected in the ground produced by our agent in the ground. For this, we are going to follow some simple steps, which I have indicated numerically in the images and in the video:

1. Duplicate the base gray color layer;

2. We turn vertically by pressing the right button on it;

3. We transform by selecting: "Edit"> "transform" until it looks like its own shadow, pay special attention to the fact that the feet are square with the shadow, erase and paint if necessary.

4. Lower the opacity of the layer;

5. Erase the most distant part of the body with the "soft rubber" to achieve a good effect.

Tip 6: I recommend that you practice this technique since it is a very good option to bring realism.

3.8 Background

Take heart, we have little left to finish!

Now we will give the illustration a subtle background to give it a little atmosphere and place the character in a space. For this I chose the tool “Brush - Thick paint - Tempera” in a large size and a grayish and bluish color range with very little saturation and contrast, since our objective is to enhance our uniformed model.

Tip 7: However, I encourage you to try making a background that integrates it into an environment, share it with us!

3.9 Final touches

The final moment arrives to equip our character with those more realistic details that will add to the work of color, light and shadow. For this, the last thing we will do is give it a strong light touch on one side in a new layer. In our case, the selected environment is of a cold chromatic range, so we will use the white color with the “Pen - G” tool, about 10-15 pt in size to highlight those final points of light.

And this would be the last step in the process of How to draw a uniform.

I hope you liked it.

Tip 8: This "trick" gives a lot of volume to our illustrations. Try making a thick line of warm light on one side and a thin line of cold color. You will see what a great result!

4. TIPS TO IMPROVE

Now that we have been working and have finished our proposed uniform tip, I would not like to finish without highlighting some tips, tips or help that I have referred to throughout this tutorial. So grab a pencil and paper for when you get down to business!

1. This proposal is terribly versatile, take advantage of it: explore other types of bodies, genres, weapons, etc.

2. Organized layers, work done! You can organize them by making a color legend.

3. Don't lose sight of your sketch; controls the opacity of the layer.

4. Likelihood. Take advantage of references to bring realistic details to your illustration.

5. Listen to your illustration! If you see that you need it, use the Line-Art and add what it asks for.

6. Don't hesitate to use the shadow cast technique to give weight to the character.

7. Play with the backgrounds to create different atmospheres that match your character.

8. Don't forget the lights projected on your figure to highlight your final presentation.

5. MATERIALS USED

Clip Studio Paint provides us with a wide range of tools and possibilities, even so, we have used these nine:

1. Pen - G

2. Magic wand

3. Paint pot

4. Rough (or designer) pencil

5. Airbrush

6. Brush - watercolor mix

7. Brush - edge-blurred watercolor

8. Text

9. Brush - thick paint - tempera

10. And the most important: passion for the arts.

6. CONCLUSIONS

In short, we have reached the end of creating this tip of the month with the theme of "How to draw uniforms", I would like to thank Clip Studio Paint and Celsys for offering this community space for artistic collaboration, and express how happy I am Makes you think this tutorial will help that learning feedback. It will be a pleasure to receive your feedbacks as well as to resolve any questions that may arise and, of course, I would be very excited to see your own versions of my proposal. I am at your disposal in my email danielpuentemorales@gmail.com. This is a good program to start since it is very intuitive and at the same time realistic in its drawing tools, so don't think twice.

A pleasure to draw for all of you!
