Good morning all. This tutorial will teach you how reflection and refraction work, teach you to draw a glass, but also to colorize the reflections in water and to colorize objects in transparency.

what is refraction / reflection

Refraction

Light is deflected when it passes from one transparent medium to another.

(from air to water, or the opposite…).

Example: when looking at a straw in a glass, it deflects and appears broken or when placing an object behind a glass filled with water, the object will be deflected and appear larger. (the magnifying effect.)

Reflection

When light is reflected off a material, the part of the light that is neither absorbed nor transmitted is reflected.

Example: when we are on a lake or a pond and we look into the distance, the landscape can be reflected in the water and we will have the image in its reverse, on the surface of the water. (mirror effect)

The colors are not representative of reality, this is to understand that the lighter blue is water.

Draw a glass

When drawing a glass, it must be indicated that it is a hard object and on the other hand underline its transparent texture and the reflections that will land on it.

I will show you step by step how to draw and weave this glass.

-To start drawing the central line A (vertical line) it will determine the center of the lens

-Then draw the horizontal line B, it will represent the width of the glass, both sides should be the same length.

  • Draw a rectangle C based on the horizontal line and find the correct height for your glass.

Draw the top and bottom cylinders. The glass is dipped slightly, so the bottom cylinder will be more visible.

A = Both sides should be the same length from the center.

The base is narrower than the top of the glass. It is for this reason that my top oval protrudes from the rectangle unlike the one below.

A- Connect the ends of the two ovals with a straight line. You can now delete your marks.

B- Copy and paste the two ovals by reducing their size a little. The two ovals must be inside the glass.

C- like the first time, connect the ends of each oval with a straight line.

D- Erase the parts that should not be visible. (I marked them with red circles.)

Glass screening

Now we are going to weave this glass.

-Create a new layer.

-Choose a light gray, the darker it will be, the more the screen will be.

-Color the place where you want to make your shadow.

-In the layer properties, click on the square with dots.

-Your flat gray has turned into frames.

1-Click on the gray area, layer properties, on the small square with the points

-my flat gray has turned into a frame.

2- I used the mixer to soften my weft a bit.

3- I added the frame on the top of the glass.

4-I also attenuated it with the mixer.

5- On a new layer, I took a feather and I made touches of light with white.

6- Finally, I added the shade of the glass on the floor.

I colorized my line with a gray to make the result softer.

Clip Studio Assets

Many users and Clip Studio paint offer 3D models, brushes, and various tools that you can use in your illustrations. I will show you how to download these tools from the Assets studio clip when you have an Ipad.

  • Click on the app logo

  • Open Clip Studio Paint

  • A new page will open

  • On your left, click on Clip Studio Assets

C = A new web page will open, enter the name of an object in the search bar, here, I put the search "glass". Prefer English, it will be easier to find objects corresponding to your needs.

When you want to take several objects and not lose them, click on the little star, your favorite searches will be placed in your favorites and you can download them later.

D = By clicking on the little star next to your account avatar, you will come across the tools that you have put in your favorites

E = By clicking on a tool, a new page will open, you just have to download it, at the bottom of this page, there will be advice on use and other information on the tool.

F = After clicking on download, click on open

G = You will return to the clip studio paint software where the tool will be downloaded. Wait a minute.

H = After it has been downloaded, click on "Return to Paint"

I + J = Your tool will be in the downloads. You can now use it.

What is interesting with 3D models is that you can manipulate the object in all possible directions and views.

Tip: when drawing ice cubes in liquid, do not make them at the bottom of the glass. They should float because the density of ice that we put in our glasses is less than that of water.

Reflections in the water

Here is a Step By step to make reflections on the water, like when you are at the pool.

  • Start by making a blue background.

  • With the pen tool make various shapes in white

  • Add thicknesses and lines protruding from your shapes.

  • Under the white lines layer, do the same with a very dark blue

  • Reduce the opacity of your two layers.

  • Add a layer on top of the previous ones and with the airbrush tool put black by touch on your illustration.

  • Add a new layer on top of the previous ones, put this layer in "Add shine" mode with a light color, add touches of light.

-Return your white and black lines layers. Go to Gaussian blur filter to blur your features a bit.

I find it still lacks sparkle.

  • Add a layer in brightness density and put touches of white on your illustration.

  • Use a "decoration" brush - Effect - Glitter.

  • I also added a few small white lines to have more sharpness in places.

Eyeglasses

I need a new avatar for my social networks, the old one is 2 years old and since I changed my hairstyle, I took the opportunity to explain to you how to make glasses.

1- I start a sketch of my avatar. I have very short hair and am a mischievous person, so I tried to best represent myself with the expression.

2- I make markers for the glasses.

I make a red rectangle of the right size in front of the eyes.

A blue rectangle where the temples of the glasses will rest.

The branches will pass above the ears.

I separate the red rectangle in two (for the glasses).

3- Using these benchmarks, I make my sketch.

4- I line my drawing. (I made a separate layer for the character and the glasses)

1- I made a new model with rounder glasses (I used the benchmarks again.) I prefer this version which corresponds better to my physique, I will finalize this one.

2- I put the solid colors (each color on a separate layer).

3- I color my illustration by putting shadows (layers in product mode) and lights (layer in brightness density mode).

I color my line to make it softer. On a new layer, I use the airbrush with red, brown and blue depending on the areas I want and then I put this new layer as a clipping mask. (it's the tool with the double square above your layers)

1- I color the glasses. The line of my character and the line of glasses have been separated, it's easier to work. I make a white square above the character and below the glasses layer.

2- I lower the opacity of the layer to 62% and use the blender per key.

3- Then, I take a soft eraser, lower the density of the brush and obliquely, erase a part to reflect the glasses.

4- Finally I add the light in the eyes. With a feather, I make white circles and I decrease the opacity of the layer to 78%.

Finally, I color the parts of the eyewear line that are under the lenses.

Colorization of a vial

I will explain how to make these vials, but also explain how to color the glass to give transparency.

1: I decided to represent the 4 elements "Water, fire, wind and earth" in vials. I make a sketch to put my idea.

2: I use a ruler to have my vials perfectly symmetrical. I use the symmetrical ruler, draw a line down the center of the vials and make the right side of each vial. (the other side will draw automatically.)

3: I remove the symmetry and make the details of my vials with the nib G. I have finished my line, I go to colorization.

1: I apply the solids of my illustration. (each color element on a separate layer)

2: I add shadows and lights on each layer. (3 "shadow" layers in product mode, 1 "light" layer in shine density mode.)

3: For water I put the reference layer in opacity 85% to obtain the transparency of this one.

Now we are going to work on the glass. Under all the colors in my illustration, I have a dark blue layer referred to glass.

1: I add on top of a layer in "clipping" mode and with the white airbrush, I put the light which is on the left.

2: I add rough shadows on the glass to mark its consistency. I am using a dark blue on a layer in product mode.

3: I attenuate these shadows a bit by using the "mixer" per key.

1: I create a layer on top of all the layers and colorize the vials with a blue (to see better) and I put this layer in opacity 30%.

2: I add a clipping layer and use the paint bucket to colorize it light blue. You can also use properties-v tools effect-layer color.

3: I add a dark blue layer in product mode and with the pen draw the outlines of the flask to give it texture.

1: I use the touch mixer to blur the shadows a bit.

2: On a new layer in shine density mode, with the pen, I draw the areas of light

3: I add some details like fire and Celtic symbols of the elements and the illustration is finished.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks for looking at it. : D
