Short summary

Hello, my name is Davis. Today I am going to teach you how to better draw water in your comic or webcomic scenes. For this I am going to teach you how to draw water in four common scenarios: In a lake, in a wave of the sea, on the shore of the sea and in a waterfall.

I will explain details that will add value to your drawing. Details such as textures, glitter mesh, gradients, blurs and transparencies.

I hope it is useful to you.

First thing's first

First we are going to see the four scenes where large bodies of water are present in the comics.

  • In a lake or pool (When the water is at rest)

  • In a sea wave (When the water is rising)

  • On the seashore (When the water moves horizontally)

  • In a waterfall (When the water is descending)

Scene 1: In a lake (at rest)

First we paint the main background blue with the "Tempera" brush to get different shades of blue and some texture, then blend it with the "Tempera Mixer"

Now with the "Lasso Fill" tool we outline and fill that shadow and draw the shine reflected in the water.

We are also going to add a spray layer, with smaller particles. Then we blur it with "Gaussian Blur" and finally we lower the opacity.

To give the sensation of slight movement of the water, we apply a few brushstrokes with "Tempera" and then we blur it with "Tempera Mixer".

And finally we just lower the opacity of the shadow and add a paper boat.

Scene 2: In an ocean wave

First we draw the base background of the wave with the "Lasso" tool and then we fill it with a gradient .

Now we are going to draw the upper part of the wave with the "Lasso Fill" tool for speed and we also paint the inner part of the wave with a greenish tone as a kind of shadow.

It's time to draw a kind of mesh with white lines and then lower the opacity and deform it with the new "Liquify" tool to give it the shape of the wave. And finally we erase the top and bottom using a layer mask.

And finally we are going to add some soft shadows on top of the wave along with some highlights and also add a little airbrush to give it a glow and not be all too flat.

Scene 3: At the seaside

First we draw the foam quickly with the "Fill with lasso" tool and then with a pen we draw that kind of mesh that we draw in the waves. And then we erase just the bottom of these with the airbrush and a layer mask.

Now to add a curvature we use the "Liquify" tool on the foam and on that kind of mesh. We also draw some slight shadows on the foam to give it more volume. Then we draw that kind of mesh but more rounded at the top.

Finally, with the "Airbrush" tool, add a layer of lighter color to the sea, a layer of white color as a glow and a last one of the color of the sea but with a lower opacity.

Scene 4: At a waterfall

First we are going to draw with the "Lasso Fill" tool the base layer of the waterfall but also in this case we will add opacity to the water since this time we want to see the color tones of the rocks behind.

Now the next thing is to apply "Motion Blur" to the lines of the rocks behind the water to convey that the water is moving quickly vertically. In addition we will add some green spots due to the greenish environment and we will blur them with the "Tempera Mixer"

To give more movement to the water of the waterfall we are going to draw vertical lines of brightness without forgetting that in the lower part of the waterfall we must draw the foams produced by the fall of the water along with a few waves.

And as a last detail we create a layer for with the "Airbrush" tool we apply a glow to the parts that we believe necessary.

Well that was all for now. I hope it will help you to improve your water drawings in various scenarios.

Any questions, corrections or recommendations leave them in the comments.

Thanks.
