Before painting, it is recommended to find a reference to facilitate observation of texture, shadows, light sources, etc. Taking the following example as the main example, my setting is a Mongolian hat, so before drawing I will look for various Mongolian hats as a reference.

draft

First draw a rough shape. You don’t need to spend too much time at this stage. You only need to draw a rough outline and then modify it.

background color

After finishing the draft, create a new layer under the draft and apply the background color

*Note that if your base color is white, it is prohibited to use all white color. If it is black, it is also prohibited to use all black color.

Roughly shaded

Create a new layer on top of the background color, set the light source and start applying rough shadows.

At this stage, you can look for photos of the light source you want as a reference, which is very helpful for beginners.

The light source for my template is cloudy light. Basically, the shadow is just below and there will be no obvious light source. Just choose a color that is heavier than the base color to lay the shadow.

*Be careful not to draw the lines too harshly

For example, the Mongolian hat in the example has a curvature when worn on the head, so the shadow will be drawn along the curvature.

second shadow

Then add a deeper shadow on the new layer

For example, the bottom part is thicker, so the shadow there will be darker.

Next, use the draft as a basis and add shadows in overlapping areas to make the picture richer.

Add details

After you have roughly drawn the shadows, you can start adding details.

For example, you can add some small shadows in some open areas to indicate the direction of the hair flow, which can also make the picture less monotonous.

Edit and consolidate

After the final drawing, you can unify the layers and trim the lines, and you’re basically done.

*I will use arcs to represent the fluffiness and fine triangles to represent the hair clumps.
