Introduction

Hello.

This article will show you how to use CLIP STUDIO PAINT EX to turn a photo into an anime background.

I think it's difficult because there are steps from Step 1 to Step 5.

I would be happy if you could join me.

Step1 The Artistic filter (illustration style)

Our goal in Step 1 is to reduce the amount of information in the photo.

So use CLIP STUDIO PAINT's filters to simplify your photos.

Use this photo.

Current layer.

Once you have selected your photo, go to Filters ➞ Effects ➞ The Artistic filter.

The Artistic filter allows you to adjust the amount of line information and color smoothness.

I wanted to simplify the photo, so I set the line value to something close to 1.

I wanted the colors in the photo to be harmonious, so I chose large numbers.

It may be hard to tell because of the slight change, but the lines in the photo have been simplified.

Also, the colors in the photo appear smoother.

Step2 Tone curve and saturation adjustment

Our goal in Step 2 is to increase the red color and saturation of the photo.

So let's adjust the tone curve and saturation of the photo after Step 1.

Current layer.

Once you have selected your photo after step 1, go to Edit ➞ Tonal Correction ➞ Tone Curve.

Then raise the Red channel graph of the tone curve slightly.

Go to Edit ➞ Tonal Correction ➞ Hue/Saturation/Brightness.

Increase saturation by 10.

This is an adjustment to make the cherry blossom color stand out.

I adjusted the photo to make the colors more vivid.

Step3 Change the shadow color

Our objective in Step 3 is to change the shadow color of the photo to blue.

Shadow color is affected by ambient light.

This photo was taken on a sunny day under a blue sky, so it was strongly influenced by that.

You can also change the shadow color of the photo to blue to make it look more like an anime background.

Let's extract the shadow part from the photo like this image.

Current layer.

Please duplicate the photo that has been adjusted in Step 1 and Step 2.

Use the duplicate photo.

Current layer.

Once you have selected the duplicated photo, go to Edit ➞ Tonal Correction ➞ Binarize.

The value for binarization was set to 100.

Next, convert the brightness to transparency and make everything except the shadow transparent.

Change the line color to the drawing color.

I was able to extract the shadow from the photo and change the color.

Please set the opacity to 50%.

Current layer.

Step 4 Makeup

Our goal in Step 4 is to make further adjustments to the photo completed up to Step 3. Create drama by making adjustments to make the cherry blossoms stand out and adding unrealistic colors to the photo.

At the end of Step 4, use CLIP STUDIO PAINT's Droplet airbrush to create the appearance of dancing petals.

aerial perspective

Use a simulated aerial perspective on the roof of your photo to make the cherry blossoms stand out more.

Please add a new raster layer.

I selected the roof using polyline selection and filled it in blue.

The composition mode is screen.

I adjusted the opacity to 50%.

Current layer.

unrealistic colors

Please add a new raster layer.

Add a highly saturated pink color using an airbrush.

The composition mode is screen.

Opacity is 30%.

Current layer.

Make the color of cherry blossoms more vivid

Please add a new raster layer.

Add some color to bring back the vibrancy of the cherry blossoms.

Paint the pink color with an airbrush.

The compositing mode is overlay.

Opacity is 100%.

Current layer.

flare

Please add a new raster layer.

Add a gradation of almost white yellow to the top of the photo.

The composition mode is screen.

Opacity is 30%.

Current layer.

SakuraFubuki

Please add a new raster layer.

Let's use Droplets to express the appearance of fluttering flower petals.

The compositing mode remains normal.

The opacity is 100%.

Step 5 Compositing

Our goal in Step 5 is to combine the photos into one image and give it a glow effect.

Use level correction to determine the light diffusion range and then apply Gaussian blur.

Combine layers into a single image to give your photo a glow effect.

Put all layers into a folder.

Right-click on the folder and select "Merge Copies of Displayed Layers".

Please hide the folder [Step1 to 4].

Save it in case you need to modify it later.

Please duplicate [Step1 to 4 Copy].

Let's correct the level in [Step1 to 4 Copy001].

Determine the light diffusion range with level correction.

Light is difficult to diffuse in areas that are close to black.

Light is diffused in areas close to white.

I think it's easier to understand if you check the image in gray.

The black range increases as you move the level correction slider in the direction of the red arrow.

After level correction, give Gaussian blur.

This time I set the value to 50.

Current layer.

Set the composition mode of the image with level correction and Gaussian blur to Screen.

Opacity is 100%.

Current layer.

If you feel that the light diffusion is not good enough, please duplicate the image.

The light is further diffused.

It was completed.

Advance a little further (Advanced)

Adjustments from this point on will result in only small changes.

Thank you for your cooperation.

The purpose here is to

  • Diffuse the light a little more

・Regain the presence of shadows

That's what it means.

Put the three layers created in Step 5 into a folder.

I named the folder [Step5].

Right-click on the folder [Step5] and execute “Merge Copy of Displayed Layer”.

I named the new image [Step5_001].

Gaussian blur 60 for [Step5_001].

Composition mode is normal.

Opacity is 10%.

Please duplicate [Step5_001].

The composition mode is multiplication.

Opacity is 10%.

done.

Thank you for your hard work

Thank you for your hard work so far.

You can watch a video of the work screen, so please take a look if you like.

thank you very much.
