How the organization of vignettes transforms your Webcomic

INTRODUCTION

Hello, welcome to this tutorial.

In this tutorial, we'll look at some of the tools available in Clip Studio Paint for creating vignettes. We'll also explore how a scene can transform from calm to faster using the same illustrations, but with a different organization and panel layout. Plus, we'll include some extra tips at the end.

THE ORGANIZATION OF VIGNETTES IN A WEBCOMIC

The organization of panels in a webcomic allows for a fairly free order, as it is read from top to bottom in a long, vertical strip. This contrasts with print comics, where panel organization tends to be more standard. However, depending on how we handle vignettes, we can completely alter a scene and its pacing.

CLIP STUDIO PAINT TOOLS

To begin, let's take a quick look at the tools that Clip Studio Paint has for creating vignettes.

Let's quickly explore some of its tools like: “rectangular vignette” “polyline vignette” “vignette border pencil” and “split vignette”

RECTANGULAR VIGNETTE

With this tool, you can create and organize rectangular vignettes with ease, adjusting their size and shape to perfectly fit your story.

It has various options in its properties.

Custom folder

Within the properties of this tool (rectangular vignette), we observe that, when creating a vignette, a custom folder is generated that helps us maintain good organization when developing our webcomic.

When creating the vignette and generating the custom folder, everything we draw stays inside the vignette.

As seen here:

border line

With this property we can create vignettes with or without a border line. When you create a bullet without a border, the bullet is created with the active rule.

We can also create borders of different colors.

As seen here:

Ratio settings

With this option, once the proportion is set, the vignette cannot be stretched or lengthened. On the other hand, you can adjust the size of the vignette while maintaining the same proportion, having the possibility of making it larger or smaller.

As seen here:

PX ratio adjustment

With this option we can also adjust the proportion of the vignettes. However, in this case, the vignettes remain the same size, without the possibility of stretching, lengthening, enlarging or shrinking.

As seen here:

brush shape

With this option, we can modify the border of the vignette and choose any desired shape. In this case, we will opt for hearts.

You can choose any available shape.

As seen here:

POLYLINE VINETTE

The polyline bullet tool is an option that allows you to create bullet borders using polygonal lines instead of simple straight lines.

This makes it possible to create curved edges, which adds freedom to create organic shapes for the webcomic.

We can use all these varieties of curves and create interesting vignette designs

As seen here:

Creating a vignette with this tool also automatically generates a custom folder, making it easier to organize your webcomic.

BULLET EDGE PENCIL

It works similar to a pencil allowing you to trace the edges of bullets manually. Which can result in more organic and personalized lines.

Creating a vignette with this tool also automatically generates a custom folder, making it easier to organize your webcomic.

SPLIT BULLET

Split bullet folder

With this option, the bullet is split and creates a separate folder automatically.

Split bullet border

This tool creates the bullet split, but does not create a new folder.

EXAMPLE OF HOW VIGNETTES ALTER THE RHYTHM OF A SCENE

Let's use a scene of a character cooking:

quick scene

In this example, we use the “polyline bullets”, “bullet border pencil”, “split bullets” tools, and reduce the space between the bullets, to create a faster environment. This conveys the feeling that the character has very little time to cook, but manages to finish in time.

Effects, gradients or text could be added to this scene to intensify it and make it look faster. However, if we compare this scene with the slow scene that we will see below, we will realize that a difference in rhythm can also be achieved with the organization of the vignettes.

slow scene

In this example, we use the "rectangular panel" tool and leave slightly wide spaces between the panels to convey the feeling that the character in the scene is calmly cooking.

When a scene is created with more space between panels, it gives the impression that the scene we are seeing is happening more slowly and deliberately.

TIPS

In order to measure the rhythm and distance of your vignettes you can use a property that Clip Studio Paint has called “area displayed on screen” (Webtoon). This will generate a framework for you, so you can visualize what your story would look like on a cell phone.

Before starting to draw cleanly, make a storyboard and feel free to imagine whatever you like, let yourself be carried away by inspiration. Afterwards, you will correct the sequence, the number of panels and their size if necessary.

Using bullets should give you a feeling of freedom. You can use them however you like: break them, overlap them or leave them straight and straight, whatever you want. Do what works best for your story.

CONCLUSION

As could be seen, the Clip Studio Paint tools allow us to create all types of vignettes, whether curved or straight. It all depends on our imagination.

With all of these options, we have the opportunity to organize and create an eye-catching webcomic, of any genre we want, and tell the story at the pace we like, whether fast or slow.
