Guide to Creating Character Outfits
- Introduction -
There are many ways to show the personality of a character, but the way they dress is arguably one of the most effective. And for the sake of time, this tutorial will only cover design in the present modern-day world. To create an outfit that brings out the personality of the character, you need first to have an idea of their strongest traits, build, and the scenario.
Incorporating Personality Into Design
There are countless ways character traits influence clothing choices. To name a few:
*I didn’t draw clean lineart for these examples because you know the sketch ~~almost~~ always looks better
Color Choices
- Bold, confident, extroverted - characters like this might choose brighter vibrant colors that attract attention.
-Shy, reserved, introverted - characters like this might prefer more neutral or subdued colors like beige or pastels.
Patterns and Textures
-Adventurous, quirky - characters like this may opt for bolder attention catching pattern and textures like animal print, plaid, or fur.
-Conservative, serious - characters like this may choose solid colors and smooth clothing like cotton or wool.
*And although this is generalizing, giving a character glasses can give them an air of intelligence.
Accessories
-Expressive, creative, maximalist - characters like this might use accessories to show their individuality. This could include statement jewelry, hats, scarves, or unique bags.
-Pragmatic, minimalist - characters like this might prefer functional accessories, such as a simple watch or a practical bag.
Fit
-Confident - characters like this might choose fitted clothing that shows off their physique.
-Reserved - characters like this may prefer clothing that is looser and more comfortable and doesn’t draw attention to themselves.
But keep in mind that sometimes fit has more to do with the character’s specific style.
Age also influences outfit choices by reflecting the priorities, lifestyles, and stage of life for the character.
For example, in the drawing below, you can assume that this character is pretty young because he’s wearing clothes that are typically worn by younger people (hoodies and converse).
Outfits and Character Build
This section is about character outfit design in regards to their build whether they’re slim, muscular, curvy, average height, tall, or short. But in my opinion, outfits are less about their build and more about the character’s personality and how that influences their clothing choices. If they’re confident or not-so-confident this will affect whether or not they choose clothes that flatter or draw attention away from their body.
Balancing Proportions: You can use clothing to balance body proportions. For instance, a character with broad shoulders might wear V-neck tops to elongate the neck and balance shoulder width.
Creating Illusions: You can use lines and patterns to create visual illusions. Vertical stripes can make a character appear taller, while horizontal stripes can add width.
Scenario And Character Outfits
When designing a look you should be aware of the scenario and the character's role within the context because it will influence a character's outfit. Many scenarios might require certain clothing:
Casual Daily Life
Comfortable and versatile clothing such as jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, and sneakers. Accessories are minimal and functional.
Professional Environment
Office Setting: Formal or business casual attire like suits, blouses, dress pants, skirts, and dress shoes. Accessories like ties, belts, and professional-looking bags.
Trade or Craft: Practical, durable clothing like overalls, aprons, sturdy boots, and work gloves.
*And as uncomfortable as heels are, there’s something about towering over people that makes you feel more confident.
Formal Events
Elegant clothes such as gowns, tuxedos, high heels, or dress shoes. Accessories like jewelry, clutch bags, or gloves.
Climate and Weather
Cold Weather: Layers of warm clothing such as sweaters, insulated jackets, scarves, hats, and gloves. Shoes like fur-lined boots.
Hot Weather: Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, shorts, tank tops, sun hats, and sandals. Accessories like sunglasses.
Rainy Weather: Raincoats, umbrellas, and rain boots.
Conclusion
And that’s it for my first tutorial, I hope you enjoyed it and thought it was helpful. :)
