Drawing different generation characters
The tutorial will explain how to draw characters of different generations.
We will begin to analyze the proportions of the face and then move on to the proportions of the whole body.
The tutorial was created using Clip studio paint software which contains the handy "Timelaps" feature that allows you to record your work.
Face Proportion
Let's draw a face of an adult person, with classic proportions, with 3 reference lines:
one for the position of the eyes, one for the position of the nose and one for the mouth.
Child face proportions
Let's draw the same thing, but this time we have to reproduce the face of a child.
The first thing we have to keep in mind is that the baby's forehead must be kept wider, bringing the other elements closer.
In fact, the nose will be smaller and shorter as well as the mouth.
In addition, the shape of the head will be rounder, while in the later it will be slimmer.
25 Years old girl
With this structure in mind, let's now draw a girl, about 25 years old, and see what characteristics she must have.
The face is regular, the lips are plump.
We lightly color the cheeks and nose with a veil of red.
The hair is flowing.
The skin is smooth, but we can draw freckles.
As you can see in the video the line and the shapes are well defined but without exageration.
65 years old woman
Let's turn now this girl into a 68-years-old lady. This will be more difficult but we can duplicate the layer of the skin and start drawing over that.
We can start drawing the eyes with more wrinkles all around. The nose then will be a little bit bigger with some wrinkle too.
The cheeks are more hollowed out, and the skin of the muscles around the mouth, descends downwards. The neck also, loses tone. Don't forget to add wrinkles on the forehead.
The lips become thins. The hair may have same gray or white color.
We can add characteristic details such as old woman necklaces and earrings.
The color of the skin is uneven you can add some spots very light tone over the skin.
Little Child
Keep the previous pattern in mind and draw a broad forehead.
Big eyes and small nose.
A small mouth with plump cheeks. You can do the skin more pink.
The eyebrows are not dark and the hair are usually short. The neck but the face in general looks a little bit fat.
Body details
Now let's take an element, such as the hand and transform it into the hand of an elder woman.
To do this we will have to accentuate the pattern of the bones caused by the loss of skin tone, we will increase the wrinkles and add skin spots.
Side view portrait of a woman
Let us now analyze the side view of the face of a young woman.
We will do a bottom lighting.
Let's draw her as usual with classic proportions , then we duplicate the drawing and age our character.
In the older version of the woman :
the neck drops below the chin and hunches behind.
he nose gets bigger.
the forehead and ear also change.
he eyes change near the eyelids
cheeks and mouth drop slightly.
See the image below.
In the next step we will see body proportions.
Body proportions
We haven't talked about the body yet.
This scheme (image below) divides the human body into 8 sectors.
The drawing on the right represents the proportions of an adult person.
Follow this scheme proportion to draw adult in general.
The second sketch in the middle is used for drawing the body of a teenager. You can see that all the element start to be bigger then the sketch on the right.
The last drawing on the left has the proportions useful for drawing the body of a child.
As you can see all the part of the child are bigger.
It is interesting also to draw a side view of a body to see the difference in the body posture of an elderly person. In the video I added this.
Now you are ready to illustrate your own character in different age.
