With Clip Studio Paint EX, you can manage your multi-page works as a single “page management file”, or .cmc file.

You can use this to make comic manuscripts, comic data for online publishing, art books, and so on.

This article will explain the basics of page management and will also go into advanced tips and tricks.

Creating a new multi-paged work

You need to adjust the settings under [File] > [New] to create a multi-page file.

(1) In the [New] dialog box, check [Multiple pages] to make a multi-page file.

Note: The [Multiple pages] option is not available when the [Use of work] is set to [Illustration] or [Animation].

(2) Click [Browse] to select the destination folder to save your file. A folder to manage your pages will be created in that destination folder.

Note: For Galaxy/Android/Chromebook users, works will be saved in the app. You do not need to select a destination folder.

(3) Enter the number of pages, then adjust the settings depending on the direction of your work (whether your work uses left binding or right binding).

(4) Click [OK] to create the multi-page file.

A page management file (.cmc) and multiple page files (.clip) will be created in the destination folder.

You can also change your single-page work to a multi-page one via [Story] > [Change basic page settings].

Basic Operations in the [Page Manager] Window

You can configure your multi-page works through the [Page Manager] window. You can add pages, change their order, and more.

<Page Manager Window>

This window is used to manage management files. Select [Story] menu → [Page Manager] to display the [Page Manager] window. Double clicking a page thumbnail opens the corresponding page file.

 Adding and Deleting Pages

You can make changes to the page number that you set in the [New] dialog box.

Click a page thumbnail in the [Page Manager] window to select the page.

Click [Story] menu > [Add Page] to add a new page after the selected page.

Click [Story] menu > [Delete Page] to delete the selected page.

 Changing the Page Order

You can rearrange the order of the pages.

In the [Page Manager] window, select and drag a page to move it.

Make sure to rearrange the order of the pages in the [Page Manager] window only!

Note:

Page files (.clip) are named in the order that they are created.

If you rearrange the pages, the file names and their orders will not match.

To rename the files so that they match the order, select [Story] > [Sort page file names]

 Combine Pages

[Combine Pages] allows you to draw on two consecutive pages that face each other.

To combine adjacent pages, select the page that you want to combine and go to [Story] > [Combine Pages].

Make sure to check the position of crop marks in the [Combine Pages] dialog box that appears before combining.

Replace Selected Page With Another File

You can replace .clip pages in a multi-paged piece of work with an external .clip file.

Note: Directly manipulating .clip files inside management folders (e.g. replacing .clip files with other .clip files of the same name, renaming and replacing them) may lead to data corruption. Always use the [Page Manager] window when replacing files.

To select files to replace, select the pages, then click on [Story] menu’s [Replace page].

This will delete the original files, and the selected ones will take their place.

Note: This action cannot be undone. If you’re unsure, keep backups using [File] > [Save as]!

The new files will replace the original files, but will be numbered after the final page in the Management folder.

To rename the files so that they match the order, select [Story] > [Sort page file names].

Combining Multiple Comics Together

If you’re drawing a series, or an anthology of comics, it might help to combine them into one file for easier printing or publishing.

You can import and add page files from other works from the [Story] menu.

A folio will be set according to their order. This will allow you to export the files in bulk.

From the [Story] menu, select [Import Page] and select the files to import.

You can select multiple files if they are all in .clip format.

For management files (.cmc), you will be able to use the [Import Page] dialog box after selecting a management file to select what to import.

Click [OK] to import the pages after the selected one.

To rename the files so that they match the order, select [Story] > [Sort page file names]

● Import Page Files Using Drag and Drop

By opening both import source and destination, you will be able to import page files with a simple drag and drop.

This will let you check the thumbnails of the page files before importing.

You can import pages to your work by dragging and dropping from the [Page Manager] window.

Ctrl + click and Shift + click will allow you to drag and drop multiple pages at once.

Note: For tablet users, use external input devices or the edge keyboard to use ctrl (on iPad: command) + click or Shift + click.

● Other methods for working on the same file from different environments

If the imported file has different basic work settings from your work, the following message will appear:

Having different settings in different pages could lead to issues such as tone moire when printing.

When combining files for printing, beware of the following:

(1) Avoid changing settings in the middle of a draft

When working on the same project with multiple people, make sure that everyone is using the same basic work settings.

(2) Edit any page files that have different settings before importing

If there are differences in size, such as the cropped border size and bleed width, you can change their settings by going to [Story] > [Change basic page settings].

(3) Check expression color settings before exporting

If expression colors [Monochrome] and [Gray] are in the same piece of work, you can use [Auto detect appropriate color depth] in the export settings dialog box to export them with their respect expression colors.

Note: Other methods for working on the same file from different environments

If you’re the only person editing the piece of work, you can use Clip Studio’s cloud service to sync your work.

See the following article for more details.

When working with multiple people, you can use the [Group work] function to access and edit a single work file between everyone.

See the following article for more details.
