How to paint glass bottles (Potions)
INTRODUCTION
Hello!
This is first tutorial, I am very excited about it. I will teach you the method I use to paint glass bottles, using the brushes that come by default in CLIP STUDIO. I decided for this occasion to focus the theme on potion jars, I hope this tutorial is helpful, without further ado let's get started!
BASE COLORS
First we will create a new document, I recommend putting a dark background color for better visualization, we draw the simple sketch of a bottle in a new layer, for this I used the tool: Pen >> G It is not necessary to be very detailed or perfect, in the end we will not use this line.
We make use of the “automatic selection” tool and in the layer where our line is, we select it on the outside (NOTE: it is important that the outline is well defined so that the selection is correct) then, in the options bar we click on “ invert selected area ”, we create a new layer, name it: BASE 1 and put it below the line layer.
In the BASE 1 layer, without losing the selection that has already been made, we make use of the “Fill” tool, we paint our selection with a slightly lighter color than the background Ctrl + D to deselect.
We create a new layer and name it “BASE 2” right click on: Fit to the bottom layer, this layer is very important since it is the one that we can modify according to the background or the environment where the bottle is located, we paint it a slightly darker color than the one we chose in “BASE 1”
In a new layer named: BASE POCIM, we are going to paint the color we want for our potion. Do not forget to Adjust to the bottom layer, then with the tool: Selection >> Lasso, we select the area that does not need to have red color and delete it.
To improve the effect of our potion, we create a new layer, we go to: Selection >> Ellipse and draw an inclined oval, then in the toolbar we click on "Fill" and on: Layer property >> Effect >> Edge effect to mark our oval.
We go back to the previous layer and erase the excess color, then we combine both layers and name it: POCIMA BASE.
In a new layer we paint the base colors of the cork, the rope and the label that they have chosen for the bottle. We adjust to the lower layer, we name it: CORK BASE.
Now in the layer: POCIMA BASE with Ctrl + T we reduce the size and place it the way it is seen in the image.
To give a nice effect to the potion, we go to the layer: BASE POCIM >> right click >> Selection from layer >> Create selection. Without losing the selection we create a new layer and start painting, for this I used: Watercolor brush >> Dense watercolor and Soft watercolor, then we combine the previous layer.
LET'S START PAINTING THE BOTTLE
We create a new layer >> Fit to bottom layer. We fill it with a dark color.
Right click >> Layer mask >> Mask external part to the selected area.
Once located in the indicated layer, we are going to use the Airbrush >> soft and selecting the white color, we mark the "shadows", I recommend that they be guided better by the cork and the label, the light and shadow work differently in Glass. Do not make them very marked either.
We create a new layer, we name it "CORK 2" >> Fit to bottom layer.
You can give the texture you want here to the accessories of your bottle, for this I used: Brush >> Watercolor >> Dense watercolor and Soft watercolor, alternating the use of these to give it the desired effect.
CRYSTAL
In this example, the light is coming from the right side, the darkest part would be from the right side, the light rays would go through the material and revolve back to the right side creating a flash in the bottle, on the left side the edge would look a bit more clear.
Here I could see better what I tried to explain in the previous step, the glass bottles have this dark edge, it depends on the background, the color of the glass or the surface where the bottle is, in this case I decided to paint it the same color as the potion, but varying the tonality. To do this: I created a new layer >> Snap to the bottom layer and used the Dense Watercolor Brush to paint the edges and add a few small flashes of the lighter red color.
We create a new layer >> Adjust to the bottom layer, we will name it as "LIGHT", with the dense watercolor brush, we paint a white color (It is better that the lights on the glass are always white) the lights should go according to the shape of the container.
In the same layer, now with the soft watercolor brush we blur the previous brushstrokes a little, it is not necessary to cover the entire surface with white, only in the areas where the transparency of the bottle would be seen. In this step we can already remove the line layer to be able to shape the bottle with the lights, you can also make sparkles with the Dense Watercolor Brush.
FINAL SCORE
Finally, we add a few more defined sparkles and shade the accessories a little more.
That's it! This is how we can paint a glass bottle in CLIP STUDIO, but before leaving:
FINAL TIPS
To paint the background or simulate part of the environment in which our bottle is, we will: BASE layer 2 and it is there where we can paint without damaging our bottle and without losing the effect of transparency.
The shape of the sparkles of the glass depend on the bottle we are painting, and remember to blend with the soft Watercolor Brush following the shape of the container towards the sides. Here are other examples of bottles with potions.
