Hey everyone, Welcome to another tutorial. I am Sanjay your host through this journey

Let's start shall we...

Onomatopoeia?

What is Onomatopoeia? For simple it's called "Sound Effects"

Manga is images that tells many stories - Quote by Osamu Tezuka. So the only way to express a sound effect within an image is introduce letters that show the "sound".

This can done in 3 ways

1. defined.....

2. Subtle....

3 Dynamic....

We'll discuss these in detail

"Defined" Onomatopoeia

See that? Yeah don't ask me what it means...I forgot too..tough life..😛😛

Now that is what I define as a "Defined" Onomatopoeia.. Why? You ask. Well, It is fairly placed

within the panel and it is used to perfectly define the mood of the scene.

Such Onomatopoeia are well spread used in the regular panel work

"Subtle" Onomatopoeia

See that? No? Look carefully you'll see smoke coming on the right side of the panel above panel 3

The one with the dialogues. Or the lower right corner you can't miss that!!

That's subtly defining a sound. In this case is scribble and sizzle (I suppose, I forgot😂😂)

This establishes a subtle effect of the sounds generated within a panel.

It can used to define sounds that are happening in the environment, that you want the reader to notice.

Like rumble of rubble, snores off screen, bird chirps...end of thinking capacity..

"Dynamic" Onomatopoeia

That just strikes the idea doesn't it?! Ya I know!🙃🙃🙃

So in this type it's really special. These are use to make a particular sound of the panel or the whole page "POP" out.

get the pop?No? sigh

These are used for making the readers to focus on the sound made at that moment.

Quick Tip: Some manga artists (example me) use Kanji or usual dialogues to show or add a dynamic flow for that page or define a moment more "LIT". Like putting Attack names or Weapons, many more..

Conclusion

There are many websites that provide both Japanese and English Onomatopoeia.

It depends on the writes taste on how to use a sound for his established scene.

I'm hoping this tutorial made some sense. I'll make further more for Manga artists out there.

Stay tuned...
