Cyberpunk:

Cyberpunk (from the English cyberpunk) was the last revolutionary cultural movement of the last century. Its origin dates back to 1982, when the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner was released and Akira, the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, was published. It is a genre focused on the near future and the digital revolution, computing and cybernetics: virtual reality, nanotechnology, architecture, globalization, hacker and youth cultures, cosplay, cyborgs or role-playing games are some of its signs of identity.

Japan is the pioneer country in cyberpunk culture. The West has been invaded by its anime films (animated films), its manga comics and video games, in which the main characters are the great Japanese metropolises. Notable titles, in addition to those mentioned above, include Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Appleseed, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Alita.

Therefore, approaching cyberpunk is essential to understand the 21st century and the role of new technologies in the world we live in, where the prophecies of manga and anime continue to be fulfilled. Hence the gestation of this course, divided into three sessions, in which each day an expert will analyze the most outstanding aspects of Japanese cyberpunk through cinema, comics and architecture. In addition, there will be a practical workshop on creating comics of this genre.

Character design:

We can take a drawing and transform it, the freedom we have to be able to design is entirely ours, we can take references from different authors or references, improvise and exaggerate using the technological theme, we can play with the deformation as seen in the video.

In the video we can see quickly how to put together an illustration, and as if it is not to our liking we can change the drawing, as well as the setting, much of what we illustrate is guided by the guidelines given by the themes; the rules can be broken and give personality to our characters.

As references we can take the classic, the images of movies like Akira, Blade Runner, The Long Tomorrow drawn by Moebius etc.

Step by Step

We are designing and defining our characters

It is practical to use the perspective rules to make our composition

We choose a background color, which we can modify depending on what the illustration demands

We can make the base of the color of the characters, always in a separate layer

we use the layers and their blending modes to make the shadows.

We can download material that is very useful to make the funds.

we are patiently adding elements and coloring, as well as using images for the posters and exporting them; This is useful since designing the logos takes time, testing the different fusion layers to choose the one that we like the most.

We are almost done we have our finished illustration,

We can play with the gradient tools and filters to give our image a different touch.
