Drawing In Perspective: Animal Edition

Hi, let's do this!

To start, you just sketch. I like to sketch with the mechanical pencil that has a 4 size and is brightly colored. I recommend using different colors with sketches to keep things organized. I start with green and then use a color that stands out from green, red for example. When sketching, use a very low stability. Normally the stability that is set when you first open Clip Studio Paint is enough, about 2 or 3. Four will work as well.

When drawing in perspective I find the edges of the head and the eyes to be particularly tricky.

I will be drawing something that may resemble a cat. No coloring today because i mostly would like to focus on the perspective sketch and line art. Also, I don't entirely know what this is. Tiger, Mountain Lion maybe?

The Sketch

I start with the nose. Draw an exaggerated triangle with to slanted lines coming from the corners.

Next, draw the left edge of the head by making a curved line from you want the left ear to start to the nose.

Finish your head ( I included pictures to show you what I mean).

To start the eye, draw tear drop shaped, oval, thing. I clearly can't explain very well. This the right eye. If you saw the how to draw a cat eye, that's the main shape.

Draw a small oval near where the head ends ( the eye's should mostly line up with line from the nose).

The smaller left eye and the way nose is shaped and placed gives the drawing perspective.

Draw two basic shapes for the ear. You can adjust the shape depending on what style you're going for.

I drew an extra line to give the ear depth.

You're about done now, just draw a basic shape for the neck.

Here is an outlined version of the sketch ( notice I made the nose smaller and gave our animal a bit more chin.

Secondary Sketch

When you finish your sketch, you may have a lot of lines. In order to have clean line art you need to be able to go over your sketch easily. Before you start this sketch you will need to lower the opacity of your layer first layer.

This isn't as much of sketch as it is preliminary line art. This is where the different colors come in.

Just outline that lines from the sketch that you want.

Line Art

Almost done!

Lower your second layer's opacity and go ahead and hide your first layer. (I just realized i forgot to outline the neck in the secondary sketch. Do that and then disable your first layer.)

Trace over the secondary sketch to get the line art. Design a nose in the exaggerated triangle. Refines some things (I resized the right eye because it looked disproportionate) and do little touch-ups.

Details

Please don't rely on me for details. I have a lot of work to do in that area. Perspective details (and details in general, except for simple or close up ones, are hard for me.

A horrible rendition of the details.

The details are way to cartoonish so you should probably find a tutorial on those specifically. If I EVER figure them out I will make a tip on them.

I may color this at some point, but not right now!

I hope this helped you ( the perspective not the details).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
