Painting fish concept:Three types of tropical fish
foreword
Sharing the drawing method of 3 kinds of fish is to pick the fish I am interested in.
river
• Pterophyllum (Angelfish)
nautical
• Pennant coralfish
• Moorish idol
But before I get to the point, I will mention my personal simple view on fish.
Easy to understand fish fins
Before painting a fish, I hope the painters will realize what kind of "fins" a "fish" usually has.
Take Tuna as an example.
1. Dorsal Fin
2. Caudal fin (Tail fin)
3. Pectoral fins
4. Pelvic fins
5. Anal fin
There are roughly five types of fins.
And these five are also the fins that [most fish] will have.
Mentioned here is to prevent the painter from drawing omissions, and it can be used as a simple inspection standard.
Or you want to create a fantasy fish yourself, you can also refer to the characteristics of real fish to make your creativity more realistic.
Tilapia
Coelacanth
Goldfish
Goldfish actually have single anal fins, double anal fins, and varieties without anal fins.
But if they have anal fins, they are usually covered by caudal fins.
In principle, I will use these five types of fins to examine how to draw a fish.
But there are some exceptions to the structure of fish.
E.g:
Pufferfish (Fugu) do not have pelvic fins.
Ocean sunfish have no pelvic and caudal fins.
It's worth noting,
If you want to draw a fish at will, it is recommended that the pectoral fins of the fish not be drawn in the middle of the fish.
The fins are usually slightly lower.
Painting Pterophyllum (Angelfish)
Angelfish, freshwater fish, native to the Amazon River in South America.
✨ Step 1.
Draw sketches to understand the structure of fish.
1. Although the overall shape of the angelfish looks like a triangle at first glance, the main body of the body is also like a rhombus,
But I think the main body of the fish is very suitable to use [round] as the basic extension.
2. [Pectoral fins] and slender [pelvic fins] are vertically aligned.
These two kinds of fins can be painted at the end,
Because the pectoral fins of the angelfish are mostly transparent, they do not need to be drawn too conspicuously.
The caudal fin usually floats with the water waves, you can think of it as a ribbon that can sway according to the needs of the picture.
3. Although the main body of the fish is based on a round shape, the skin color of the angelfish will extend from the main body to the fins.
Some parts with special colors are already on the fins.
4. Overlay the drawing with the finished drawing to give you a reference to the structure.
✨ Step2.
Line art, fill in the background color
The line art draws the outline according to your own needs.
Considering that some people may be used to drawing without lines, I deliberately minimized the lines.
Line art and background color are opened in a separate layer, so it is 1+3, and there are currently 4 layers.
It is more convenient to color the fins and the main body of the fish separately.
✨ Step3.
Give the fish the correct color.
Don't think too much about it here. If you think the color of the fish and the pattern, you should draw it first.
Overlay can use the layer clipping function, so that the layer drawn on the base color will not be drawn out of range.
✨ Step4.
Color the fins.
Line the fins with a colored pen.
Paint the pattern, please open a new layer here to distinguish it from the line.
When trimming, you can directly use the eraser to erase the effect you want.
✨ Step5.
Trim to give ambient light or three-dimensionality.
I layered a layer of color on the whole of the fish, the layer color mixing effect - Screen, the layer transparency is about 50%
Wrap the original layers in the folder, open a new layer on the folder, and use layer clipping to cover the color on the whole.
Trim the line color and fill in the extension of the tail.
Draw the pectoral fins, the overall picture is almost done
✨ Step6.
fish scales or its reflections.
I specially put this step at the end, because it is not necessarily necessary to emphasize the body texture of the fish in your painting.
Sometimes a single object is drawn too finely, and it is not well integrated into the whole picture.
Especially the more brightly colored fish, showing the color on their body is the key.
1. Layer Blending Effect - Highlight Color (Glow dodge)
2. Layer Blending Effect - Screen
3. Layer Blending Effect - Multiply
For the texture, I used two materials downloaded from the material store.
✨ Step7.
Finish.
At most another layer of light blue is superimposed on it as an ambient light for the water. Layer Blending - Screen)

Painting Groomfish (Pennant coralfish)
Groomfish, saltwater fish, distributed in the Indo-Pacific region.
✨ Step 1.
Draw sketches to understand the structure of fish.
I chose the equilateral triangle as the base shape of the fish body.
The bright yellow semicircular dorsal fin is characteristic of this fish.
I drew the pelvic fins too low when I sketched, and I adjusted them later.
✨ Step2.
Line art, fill in the background color
Because the color of the groom fish is relatively simple, only one layer is opened for the background color.
✨ Step3.
Give the fish the correct color.
Black and bright yellow.
I added a bit of brown and blue to the black edges for a bit more color.
✨ Step4.
Trim to give ambient light or three-dimensionality.
Considering the fish swimming in the sea, my shades are bluish.
(Right) Layer blending effect for ambient light - Screen.
✨ Step6.
Add yellow pectoral fins.
Add fish scales or its reflections.
1. Layer Blending Effect - Highlight Color (Glow dodge)
2. Layer Blending Effect - Multiply
For the texture, I used this material downloaded from the material store. I used the "Bメッシュマット" brush.
✨ Step7.
Finish.

Painting Moorish idol
Scythe, saltwater fish, distributed in the Indo-Pacific region.
✨ Step 1.
Draw sketches to understand the structure of fish.
The scales on the scythe are not very reflective.
The main difficulty in drawing it is to draw the color lines on the body and the outline of the shape of the fish.
I didn't notice that the mouth was drawn too long when I sketched, the red line is corrected.
Although the overall shape of the sickle is close to a triangle, after thinking about it, I still think it is better to use a circle as the main reference.
In this way, the fish will not be deformed and drawn too long or too narrow.
✨ Step2.
Line art, fill in the background color
The focus of the fish lies in the lines on the body, and the line art only needs to outline the outline of the fish.
✨ Step3.
Draw the black part of the texture first,
But I would choose to open a new image and paint these areas black first.
✨ Step4.
Draw borders.
In this part, I want to say that the lines of some fish are relatively easy to see, but they may not.
You might be able to skip this part, as some painters won't choose to draw these lines.
Or just draw the line segment I circled below.
(Because of teaching, so I draw a little more)
✨ Step5.
Continue to paint until the black is finished.
Please place this layer below the black pattern in the previous painting.
✨ Step6.
Continue to open a new layer and place it below the previous pattern.
This time paint the yellow part.
At this time, the transparent pectoral fins can be supplemented.
✨ Step7.
Trim to give ambient light or three-dimensionality.
Layer shadows and reflections on top.
✨ Step8.
Finish.
At most another layer of light blue is superimposed on it as an ambient light for the water. Layer Blending - Screen)

appendix
I have sent the base positioning icons used in these examples to the material store, and those who need them can download and use them.
end
I picked 3 species of fish with long dorsal fins to introduce, which is my own bad taste.
These fish are beautifully colored, so just learn how to draw them simply, and even if you don't need to draw some special angles, fish are great for your canvas.
Hope this article helps you~
