Pen and Brush Customization
This article is based on the tablet version of Clip Studio Paint.
PC users should refer to the explanation for Studio Mode.
The layout of menu commands may vary in the smartphone version.
Brush Customization
Though the default pen and brush (rendering sub-tools) names match their respective settings, you can adjust the blending, blurring, texture, and other preferences to your liking.
Studio Mode
You can customize brushes in Studio Mode from either the Tool Property palette or the Sub Tool Detail palette.
This article introduces basic brush adjustments for thick paint and watercolor painting.
For more details about each setting item in the Sub Tool Detail palette, see the following article.
Simple Mode
In Simple Mode, select a pen or brush, then tap the arrow on the right side again to display the adjustable items. The items displayed vary depending on the sub tool.
Below are the typical settings for thick paint and watercolor brushes that can be adjusted in Simple Mode.
Color mixing: When turned on, you can mix colors painted on the same layer while drawing.
Brush density: Adjusts the strength of the brush used for drawing.
Watercolor edge: When turned on, a dark border is added to the edge of the stroke.
Spraying effect: When turned on, you can render in a scattered, spray-like way.
Using perceptual and realistic blending modes
There are two types of color Mixing modes: Standard and Perceptual.
When set to Perceptual, you can mix colors without dulling them. For example, by mixing yellow and blue, you can turn them into a realistic paint-like green.
Left: Standard color mixing vs. Right: New Perceptual color mixing
For more information on realistic Mixing modes, please check this article.
Studio Mode
For each sub tool, you can change between Standard and Perceptual color mixing in the Ink category of the Sub tool Detail palette. Further, when Perceptual is selected, the mixed color result can be brightened to a specified degree in Brightness correction.
Simple Mode
In Simple Mode, you cannot change the Mixing Mode for each brush.
You can draw using the Mixing mode that is preset on the brush.
Importing Photoshop brush files (extension: .abr)
In Studio Mode, you can import and use brush files with the .abr extension.
Select the location (Tool or Sub Tool group) where you want to store the imported brush, then select Import sub tool from the Show menu in the upper left of the Sub Tool palette.
For more information on importing .abr brush files, please check this article.
