This article is based on the tablet version of Clip Studio Paint.

PC users should refer to the explanation for Studio Mode.

The layout of menu commands may vary in the smartphone version.

Let's adjust the pen pressure and brush settings to draw your preferred lines with Clip Studio Paint.

The initial settings are ready-made to draw with as they are, but by adjusting your pens and brushes, you can find the settings that suit you best. Since pen pressure and touch preferences vary from person to person, it is a good idea to adjust them several times until you are completely satisfied.

Note: Before adjusting the pen pressure, let's back up the app settings.

For more details on backing up app settings, please refer to this article.

Adjusting the pen pressure

Try reviewing your pen pressure settings if you find it difficult to control your lines, such as having to apply more pressure than usual to draw, or being able to draw lines without applying any pressure.

Studio Mode

Pen pressure can be adjusted across the entire Clip Studio Paint application and can also be set for individual pens and brushes.

App-wide pen pressure settings

In Studio Mode, select Clip Studio Paint menu > Pen Pressure Settings and adjust the settings according to the instructions in the displayed dialog box.

Individual pen and brush settings

Select the sub tool in Studio Mode, then adjust the pen pressure graph in the Brush Size Dynamics on the Tool Property palette.

You can find more detailed setup instructions in this article.

Simple Mode

To adjust the pen pressure throughout the entire app in Simple Mode, you will have to switch to Studio Mode and adjust the settings there. Pen pressure settings for the entire app set in Preferences in Studio Mode will also be reflected in Simple Mode.

Individual pressure adjustment for pens and brush pens will not be reflected and cannot be set in Simple Mode.

Draw smooth lines using stabilization

When using a pen to draw on a tablet, slight hand movements caused by weak friction or tension may affect the line. In such cases, try adjusting the stabilization value. When drawing particularly long strokes, increasing the stabilization value will make it easier to draw smooth lines.

Studio Mode

While selecting the sub tool you want to adjust, make adjustments in the Tool Property palette or the Sub Tool Detail palette.

For details on each Stabilization item, please refer to this article.

Note: Adjust to suit your needs.

Increasing the stabilization value makes it easier to draw smooth lines, but it becomes harder to express finer details.

When drawing long strokes or pop illustrations, we recommend increasing the value. For a traditional feel, decreasing the value is recommended. Try adjusting the settings according to your needs.

Simple Mode

After selecting a pen or brush, tap the arrow on the right side to display the settings. Use the slider to adjust the stabilization value.

Setting/Canceling Line Starting and Ending

You can create the effect of lines gradually getting thicker and thinner by adjusting the pen pressure as you draw, but you can also use the app's settings for the same results.

Studio Mode

(1) Display the Sub Tool Detail palette while the desired sub tool is selected.

(2) When displaying the Starting and ending category, you can also set the Starting and ending effect dynamics and How to specify.

If you want to remove the current Starting and ending settings, set Starting and ending to None.

For more details on the Starting and ending settings, please refer to this article.

Remove starting and ending settings throughout the entire app

By default, the app is set to create tapered lines and strokes even without pen pressure, like when drawing with a finger or a mouse.

If you do not want to add starting and ending settings to the line when drawing with your finger throughout the entire app, you can disable it in Preferences.

In the Clip Studio Paint Menu > Preferences > Drawing tool settings, please uncheck Reduce pen pressure when drawing with finger/mouse at the start and end of brush strokes.

Simple Mode

If you want to disable starting and ending settings when drawing with your finger or mouse throughout the entire app, switch to Studio Mode and set it. The starting and ending settings that were set in the Studio Mode Preferences will be reflected in Simple Mode.

Individual pen/brush starting and ending settings cannot be set or undone in Simple Mode.

Adjusting the touch position for finger drawing

When drawing with your finger, try adjusting the point where your finger touches the line to make it easier to see. Try adjusting the touch position to one that makes it easy for you to draw.

Note: If you shift it too much, it will affect how you select menu commands, so try adjusting it little by little.

Studio Mode

Adjust from Clip Studio Paint menu > Preferences > Touch category.

Simple Mode

From the menu in the upper right corner of the screen select Preferences and Help > Adjust touch position.
