INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone I am NightShade, and today I would like to show you how I paint Lotus flowers, as seen in my painting above, The Opal Lotus Lake.

SHAPES

First, I sketch where I would like to paint with the mechanical pencil. Red pencil for the lotus pads, and the Blue pencil for the lotus flower.

Using the ruler tool I make the shape of the lotus pad.

I start painting the lotus pads with a thin Oil Paint brush.

Following the ruler, I leave open spaces for the grooves of the lotus pad.

For the lotus flower, I shape the petals from thick to thin. Spreading the petals apart to give the flower a distinguished arch.

COLOR & PAINTING

To paint the background, I pick a dark Blue-ish Purple, and brush with a Pointillism art brush, for texture and color.

I evenly brush across my canvas horizontally and vertically.

To make highlights in the water I brush in waves with aquamarine.

I go over the highlighted areas with a darker blue for shadows, and lightly blend it with the aquamarine.

I paint the outer lines lotus pads a light green, and color the inside of the pads a dark olive green.

Using three shades of pink, I paint the lotus flower with the oil brush from thin to thick vertically.

For the inside of the lotus flower, I use yellow, marigold and a burnt gold. Crosshatching the center of the flower the pressing down to make circles.

DETAILS

For details, I paint the top of the lotus pads with Dry Gouache, and use the Oil Paint brush with the color white to make ripples in the water.

I paint the outline of the lotus flowers with a light Rouge and Rose Pink.

With the Pointillism brush, I add highlights with the color white over the tips.

For Fireflies, and light reflections, you could download a Star effect from Clip Studio Assets or create one yourself. I previously made a star brush for myself and added Blue, Yellow, and White stars.

I duplicate the layer and move it underneath the stars I made above, and then changed to opacity 20% percent.

TEXTURE

I use Cloth texture background seen below, for a painting canvas feel.

I add it the change the layer to overlay, and change the opacity to 18% percent. If you don’t want the Cloth to take over the colors of the painting change it back to normal.
