The Basics

Here is where you can find textures! For this tutorial, all the textures I'll be using come with Clip Studio Paint. You could also download new textures to try out, in Clip Studio Assets. I'll show you the basic steps I use when doing textures.

Drag and drop your texture onto the canvas. It will appear as the top layer. Right click the layer and click "Rasterize". This will make it possible for you to erase on the texture layer.

Add a new layer and clip it to the texture layer. This will be where you paint bucket the color you want the texture to be.

Set the texture layer to multiply. This makes the texture look like it's part of the art instead of just on top.

1. Add a Traditional Look

To achieve a traditional look to digital art, layer a paper/canvas looking texture over the image. I used the "Canvas" texture.

2. Add Realism to skin

Layer a texture layer over the character, one with lots of spots to mimic pores. I used the "pencil" texture for this.

Fill the layer clipped to the texture layer with your skin color. It will make the texture blend in better. Erase texture layer until it is only on the skin.

3. Stylized Shading

In some comic books they add a screentone or texture to the shading to make it stand out more. In this case, clip the texture layer to your shading layer. The texture I used was "wood".

Try rotating the texture layer so the lines go in the direction of the shadows.

4. Add texture to Clothes

Pick a texture that resembles fabric/threading. I used "Kimono 02" for this.

Fill the layer clipped to the texture layer with whatever color the characters clothes are. Erase the texture layer until its only on the clothes.

5. Quick backgrounds

My favorite way to use textures is to use them for simple backgrounds. Pick any texture you want and scale it up so you can see larger lines or spots. Get creative! Here I used the texture "Cotton".

Color the layer clipped to the texture layer the same color as your background. Drag both layers behind the character.

Hope this helped!
