Various monochrome manga effects - Giving a place and color to emotions -

We will explain how to express emotions using monochrome manga finishing effects!

<Happy>

It expresses the feeling of your cheeks and chest becoming warm and cozy,

and of a pleasant smell coming from your happy feelings.

① Color the cheeks and chest with a sandy brush.

② Use a pointillist brush to connect the areas where the emotion came from (such as someone who said something nice to you, or the scenery).

③ Color the background in cherry blossom pink. Use a slightly textured brush to create the image of petals.

<Angry>

Yelling loudly.

This effect expresses the anger rising from the stomach to the head and the dark feelings that are lingering.

① Place a passionate tone in the background and speech bubble. Tone used: Mottled streamline

② Use a pointillist fluffy scatter brush with drawing color: black and background color: black

③ Splash brush (splash a little on the person as well)

Click on the squares in the bottom left of the color wheel and set both to black to transform it into a disturbing brush.

<Sorrow>

I draw the scene where the whole screen is dark with a heavy feeling.

① Use the gradient tool to darken from top to bottom to create a heavy atmosphere.

It won't blend in as is, so in the layer properties, set "Mesh Settings" to "Noise."

② Add white with a single stroke of the brush in the center around the chin.

<Easy>

A smile like a flower blooming.

① Simply splash flowers with your favorite flower brush.

② With the brush used in step 1, set both the foreground and background colors to black → tap to create a shadow-like effect → use a sandy brush to erase some of the gray and blur the area.

③ Use the fluffy pointillist scatter brush to splash flowers on both sides at the same height as the cheeks.

④ Create a layer above the hair layer and use the sandy brush to tap the bottom with white to make it shine.

It's done!

It's also available on tablet!

Since the brushes used will be changed frequently, we recommend using Studio mode.

Bonus: Finding color and a place for your emotions

When I'm working on the name and rough draft, I think about the exact location of the emotion I want to express.

It's usually around the head or heart, and the emotion that seeps out spreads into the background.

For example...

  • Emotions that suddenly cross your mind pass by

(Did that line just now...trying to flirt? Or a feeling of doubt that something is suspicious...)

  • Emotions that remain after the conversation has died down stay in your chest

(That said something unpleasant... Or a feeling of love that you like after all...)

  • A sudden burst of excitement bursts in the front of your body,

  • An idea that's it! A flash of inspiration appears above your head

In this way, I define the location of the emotion according to the story, and when I'm finishing up, I paint based on that!

Please give it a try if you like.
