In Clip Studio Paint Ver.1.8.6.,12 new sub tools have been added to the default drawing tools.

Each of these new brushes emulate traditional art mediums.

This article explains how to give a watercolor look to your digital art.

Clip Studio Paint Ver.1.8.6 - New sub tools

6 new sub tools have been added to the [Realistic Watercolor] group of the [Brush] tool, 5 to the [Thick Paint] group and 1 in the [Eraser] group.

Note: If you update to Ver. 1.8.6 from Ver.1.8.5 or a previous version, the brushes added to the [Thick Paint] group will instead be added to the existing [Oil paint] group.

[Realistic Watercolor] Group

[Round Watercolor Brush], [Flat Watercolor Brush], [Soft Bleed], [Rough Wash], and [Watery Brush] have been added.

Every sub tool in this group has textures and watercolor borders, emulating the qualities of drawing on real paper. Unlike previous watercolor brushes, the base colors do not blend together, so you can enjoy overlapping different colors on the same layer.

· Round Watercolor Brush

The most basic brush. The brush size and paleness change according to the pen pressure.

· Flat Watercolor Brush

A flat, rough, and harsh textured brush. The paleness changes according to the pen pressure.

· Soft Bleed

A brush that emulates the bleed of watercolors on wet paper. While it can be used with strokes, we also recommended using it like a stamp as well.

· Rough Wash

A rough edged brush. The brush size and paleness change according to the pen pressure.

When used with a large brush size, it can also be used to emphasize textures.

· Textured Blender

This brush allows color blending while keeping a rough texture. This brush cannot be used to paint color.

Note: On devices running Clip Studio Paint version 1.10.10 or later, the [Textured blender] will be included under the [Blend] tool > [Blend] group.

・ Watery Brush

A soft blending brush that emulates water added to watercolor on paper.

[Thick Paint] Group

[Gouache], [Dry Gouache], [Thin Gouache Brush], [Pointillism], and [Gouache Blender] have been added.

Every sub tool in this group has brush tip image settings, emulating the harshness and roughness of traditional paint.

· Gouache

[Texture] is activated. Strong strokes will be bold, and weak strokes will be rough, as if drawn on paper. The brush also has color mixing, and will blend any colors under the stroke.

· Dry Gouache

The dry gouache brush uses texture settings to emulate the rough strokes of a dry analog brush. The brush also has color mixing, and will blend any colors under the stroke.

· Thin Gouache Brush

The thing gouache brush used textures for a slightly rough and light stroke. This tool is especially convenient for final touches and small details. The base color blending settings have been configured for thin strokes.

· Pointillism

Using [Spraying] settings, the pointillism brush draws multiple dots with a single stroke. The brush also has color mixing, and will blend any colors under the stroke.

· Gouache Blender

This brush gently blends layered colors while maintaining the paper texture. This brush cannot be used to paint color.

[Eraser] Tool

A kneaded eraser has been added.

Just like the kneaded eraser used in traditional drawing, pencil lines can be gently erased with this new tool. By tapping an area with a large brush size, the brush can be used as a gauze to absorb watercolor paint.

No new settings have been added to make these new sub tools. You can adjust existing settings with the [Tool Property] and [Sub Tool Detail] palette (EX/PRO only) to create new tools. Please take a look at the new tools, and customize them to suit your style.
