1. Finding a material to publish!

In Clip Studio Assets, materials such as backgrounds, patterns, and sound effects created with Clip Studio Paint can be published.

Wondering how to publish your own materials on Clip Studio Assets?

It might sound like a lot of work, but there’s no need to think too hard. For example, do you have materials like this?

  • Backgrounds you’ve drawn
  • Effect lines such as flashes
  • Original patterns
  • Frequently used sound effects

Images that you made for yourself may be practical and useful materials for others as well.

Let's publish these materials created for yourself using Clip Studio Assets!

Q. Can I publish any kind of material on Clip Studio Assets?

A. You can only publish original materials that you have made on Clip Studio Assets.

This means that you cannot publish compilations of materials made by other people or customized materials made by others.

You should also make sure that any images or textures are your own. You cannot publish materials made with stock images or images created by someone else.

This includes images that are copyright-free or free for commercial use. Of course, these rules only apply when publishing to Assets! You are free to use such brushes and materials for personal use.

For details, refer to the following terms of use and guidelines.

2. Preparing for publishing

Once you’ve decided on a material, let’s check what we need in order to publish.

2.1 Material settings

Before publishing the material, let's check the following.

<For image materials>

  • Make sure the layer setting is correct.
  • Make sure that the expression color of the layer is as intended, and not set to anything else such as [Draft].
  • If you want to make a material with multiple layers as one material, group it in a layer folder.

To group multiple layers in a [Layer folder], select the layer you want to group and select [Create folder and insert layer] from the [Layer] menu.

  • Give the layers an easy-to-understand name such as “main line,” “solid,” etc. so the layers in the folder can be identified at a glance.

<For pattern images>

In case of non-seamless backgrounds and effect tones in monochrome comics or color illustrations, etc., make sure that the material isn’t too large or too small when using it for its intended purpose.

Create the material in any way you wish. Materials and techniques that you made for yourself may be practical and useful for others as well.

If there are specific ways to use the material, it is a good idea to add it to the instructions and example sections. After confirming the material, register it to the [Material] palette.

2.2 Registering to the [Material] palette

Register backgrounds, sound effects, etc. to the [Material] palette. If it is already registered to the [Material] palette, you do not need to register a new one.

To register the created material on the [Material] palette, select the layer you want to register in the [Layers] palette and select [Edit] menu > [Register Material] > [Image].

Set the [Material name], [Paste operation], [Location to save material], and [Search tag].

(1) Material name

Set a simple and clear name.

(2) Paste operation

[Scale up/down] - If you’re not sure, leave it and adjust after pasting.

[Tiling] - Set this for seamless tones. Backgrounds, balloons, sound effects, etc., do not need this setting.

[Specify overlay] - Specify the material’s insertion position in the [Layer] palette when pasting. When it is off, a new layer is created above the current layer, and the material is pasted there. This can be left unselected.

(3) Location to save material

Choose where to save the material.

(4) Search tag

Set your search tags. Setting tags is useful when searching for materials later. Set a tag that matches the material.

When you click [OK], the material is registered in the [Material] palette. You can also change this setting later. To change a material's settings, double click it on the [Material] palette.

You can also register materials by dragging and dropping them directly from the [Layer] palette onto the [Material] palette.

Note: Items that can be registered to the material palette

You can register all layers that can be created with [New Layer] to the material palette, such as raster layers, vector layers, and layer folders. Depending on the type of layer, some settings, such as paste operations, cannot be applied.

2.3 Preparing examples and introductions

Next, let's prepare examples and introductions for the material.

The example and introduction are necessary to show what the material is, and how to use it. Even a simple introduction will do the job.

Prepare the following: a thumbnail, an introduction, and an example.

(1) Thumbnail

It is registered automatically, but you can also make it yourself.

(2) Introduction

This is the introduction above the instructions and example(s). For example, you can show the material’s purpose, how you use it, etc.

[Introduction example]

  • This is an image material of a blue watercolor effect. It’s useful for backgrounds and effects.
  • This is a background material of a Japanese style room. It can be used as a background for comics and illustrations.

(3) Examples

An example can be put in the instructions and example section. For example, Celsys official materials are jpeg files about 400 pixels in size. There is no specific rule on the size, but when you create it with a width under 550 pixels, the image fills the space nicely. You can combine it with illustrations, or use frames that use the material.

[Example]

A: Material use example

These are examples of your material in use. It makes it easier to understand how to use the materials.

B: A large example

You can see the entire material. It is simple and easy to understand.

After you have prepared the material, its description, and examples, let's publish the material on Clip Studio Assets using the method in the below article.
